It will be interesting to see how long it lasts vs a gas version. My ancient mastercraft is 40 yrs old and still functions.
They definitely don't built them like your old Mastercraft anymore.. craftsman I had before lasted 10 years and rusted all to crap.. The plows going by throwing salt and sand in to the driveway are a killer on that high quality steel used in the new units 😳

1/2 driveway, then wait 3 hours to charge then do the other 1/2. That is not that big of a driveway and no sidewalk. I will stick with my gas blower for now.

I purchased this the same Snowblower in 2022 From Home Depot and it worked great, I was very happy with it clearing my 100ft driveway, path and deck on a single charge. Way better than the old gas alternative.
However in 2023 there was an issue with with the auger motor control. it would click, but not turn. I contacted Ryobi and was directed to take it to the local service centre. Almost a year later and dozens of phone calls to Ryobi and the service centre I have not got my machine back.
So great machine, but terrible customer service.
That really sucks.. I've had the same issue once before. My garage is semi heated. So few minutes near the heater got it working again. Hasn't been an issue since. But it is kind of a drawback to have a snowblower that freezes in the cold..

So how many driveways like normal driveways you think you could do just driveways either straight up and down probably 20-30 ft long
Typically 1 car wide 20-30 feet long? In a 3 or so inch snow storm. You could maybe do 3 on a charge.. I’ve got a follow up video ready to go, as a post 2 winter update. I've picked up a few tricks the last 2 winters with it. And I've worked it even harder in the next video than I did in this one 🤣
I would like to know how does this model perform in a mix of 50% iced snow (the kind of mix the city plower leaves on the border of the driveway a couple of days after a storm)

Thank you for making this Ryobl 24' 2-Stage battery snow blower with great content. I think putting a strip of door weather seal foam strip may prevent the snow discharging out of the bottom of the discharging chute. Based on many battery snow blower user's suggestion as well as my personal experience, the best way to maximize the battery run time on battery snow blower is to run the auger and drive speed as low as possible which will increase the runtime up to 40%. Sure it is fun and impressive to blow the snow as far as possible; however, the slowest speed with electric torque is more than enough for heavy snow blowing even with snowplow piles for me. I typically get over an hour + run time on my unit.
I was debating to pre-order this unit through Home Depot few months ago especially it was including a free leaf blower (great for blowing light snow off cars and driveway), heated handles and two speed reverse ; however, changed to EGO with two 10.0Ah batteries rated for 24 car space with 8' snow (56Vx 10Ah x2 = 1120Wh vs 40Vx 6.0Ah x4 = 960Wn = 1 x40V 4.0Ah battery) as it has independent freewheel for turning 360 degree ability in same spot with or without motor engagement, 200° chute rotation vs 180°, faster charging time (included two 550W chargers that takes 70 minutes for a full 10.0 Ah charge), ease of assembly (5 hand tighten nuts and bolts), ability to take larger capacity batteries in the future (le, 56Vx 12.0Ah x2 = 1344Wh) which the Ryobi unit's battery bay does not appear will be able to house the current larger 7.5Ah batteries in the and most important of all it comes with 5 year warranty on both the snow blower and the batteries.

Good idea about the weather stripping, I'll give that a try.
And yes the lower auger speed does help greatly. I've used it 3 times since to move about 8-10cms each time at the lowest speed and the batteries still have about 25% charge left after 3 usages.

I dont have the measurements yet (probably in the spring) but I'll be 3d printing a replacement "washer" that sits upon the impeller exit hole. If I can get something that works fairly well, I'll be repacing the factory installed one. (Unless someone already has the 3d plans for a replacement)
impressive but give me a good ole fashioned polluting oil and gas machine any day. I know it's bad for the environment but they just have more power and reliability. I don't think the tech is quite there yet with battery powered power equipment, in a few years maybe. Besides, I also enjoy the maintenance aspect of a combustion engine, it's what I grew up with and brings me joy, I even like the smell of gas and oil lol.
Nothing beats the smell of a gas and oil.. use to love walking in to the local small engine repair shop as a kid 😎..
But your right, the tech is new and there are some growing pains. But there is some serious potential behind it. Thanks for watching..

I've got their P262 impact wrench, and it zips off lug nuts fast! Even made changing my lower control arm easier than the first time. (122ft-lbs. First time needed a 18in breaker bar, and the fear of snapping it. Second time just 1-2 seconds with the P262.)
Finally, someone who's not afraid to push these things! Most of the video reviews of electric snowblowers are showing them in a couple of inches of snow... How does it do in packed snow and ice (like the embankment made by the snowplows)? Because even some gas snowblowers can struggle with that! Anyway thanks for sharing this !
It works very well with the snowplow embankment. The electric drive gives it more torque than a gas version of the same size.

If you have big property you would need two more sets of batteries more chargers probably about $1,000 more That's why gas is still king!!

All lithium Ion batteries will degrade much faster if they sit at 100% charge or 0%. They like being between 20-80%, with 50% being ideal.
P.s. this also applies to your smartphone, laptop etc

How do you turn off this snow blower after using it?
Either remove the batteries or just let it sit. It auto powers off after about 90 seconds. Unless you're using the lights and grip heaters, those will stay on for about 5 minutes after you let go of both control leavers.
I had a single stage Ryobi 21" snowthrower. I used it twice one in Nov.2021, then Jan 2022. then the motor quit on me, before I have finished the work. A fusible fuse must have opened from excessive current draw, w/c is a safety feature. I wish they can use a reset ckt breaker instead of fusible switch. Just a suggestion with Ryobi engineers. The motor is strong except maybe the inverter is susceptible to overheat or drawing more current that can handle when there is a heavy load on the motor. Otherwise, Ryobi 40V snothrower is awesome!
Seems the aguer motor likes to freeze up, if you let it sit with snow in it.. Several other people saying the same thing. But works fine again few hours later if you can warm it up..
Nice review. I use 2 batteries at a time, keeping 2 always charged. No problem doing my drive (2x wide, 2x long) and my neighbour’s as well on just over the first pair.
It would be cool to see a head to head against the Ego 2 stage.
And Ryobi is available from Home Depot which is just about everywhere (in major Canadian centres) as opposed to EGO, which you can't buy from a retailer east of Ont./Que. Also note, GreenWorks doesn't have a 2-Stage or self propelled snowblower.
And the Ryobi lawnmower is pretty decent with the same batteries (2), giving you 6 for snowblowing.

I just took delivery of mine today and I'm getting ready to unpack it. So I can pretty much guarantee now that we won't see any more snow here in southern New Brunswick until next November.

So I've had mine for over a month now and used it about 4 times. I have a driveway that can do about 10 cars plus RV parking on the side which is about 3 cars and I do all this with the 4 batteries provided.
Was this the 24 inch model?
Yes its the 24inch version. Have a follow up video coming in few weeks with footage I shot near the end if this past winter. Going in to the 3rd season and still does exactly what I need it too.
But did battery last long?
Depends on how much snow needs to be moved.. My driveway is big enough you easily park 6 Ford F150 pickup trucks in it, and still have room to walk around them. A typical storm for us is about 10cms. The unit will clear the driveway, front walkway and still have about 15% battery left (25% light starts to flash at 15%). More snow than that, I'd have to do a mid-storm clear. Or do half, put a set on charge well I clean out the cars than finish the rest after 45mins of charging.
I'm working on a 2 winter update video with some footage I shot last March, look for it in a few weeks.
I’ll stick with my gas husqvarna.
These 4 40V 6AmpHr battery have less capacity @ .96 kWh then 2 56V AmpHr Ego batteries at 1.1 kWh. And they have a new unit that comes with 4 56V 10AmpHr batteries so 2.3 kWh capacity. Ego way more battery capacity.
Your theory is good. However that assumes both units have the same size motor. One would think using a higher voltage and larger capacity battery would result in the manufacturer using a larger motor to advertise motor power over the other brands. Large motor draws more power so might actually end up with less run time.
Neither manufacturer list the actual motor size, so unless someone rips the 2 down we'll never know..
maybe my gas blower just has a really good muffler but the whine of these electric blowers sounds ear piercing.

Toro has an electric two stage snow blower that appears that it might be belt driven. Videos I've seen Toro seems to use the an existing chassis they use for their gas snow blowers.
Yup I looked at that one before getting the Ryobi.. it does just seem like they did a retrofit of a gas one. So not sure how well it performs. I have a follow up video coming out next month on the Ryobi and what I've learnt after 2 winters of use.
Battery run winter equipment is worthless and most of the summer run stuff is marginal at best.

Spec says 150lbs.. maneuver good under power. Doesn’t freewheel however, when the drive isn't running.

Ya, I've see the price this year as well and kind of disappointed. It's up almost $1000🇨🇦 from last year. I'd have a hard time buying it at that price.

Lol you're incorrect about the "Ergo" ... The Ego comes with 2x 7.5ah 56v batteries. You don't have to go buy a second. I got a great video of it running through about the same amount of snow as your video.
Good video, the electric units are going to give the gas ones a real run for thier money. Was impossible to find any of them, when I bought this one. Had to drive over an hour to get it.. But the EGO was only a single battery kit at the time when I was looking. I see now on Lowes website it's more money with 2 batteries, than what I was looking at a few months back.

Never saw a 2 stage Ego sold with one battery. must be a Canadian thing. Mine came with 4 batteries and 2 rapid chargers.
Must have been a regional thing at the time. This year I've seen the EGO with the 4 battery kit as well. However prices are up $1000 on both the Ryobi and the EGOs up here this year. Be a hard sell to even myself at the price this year.

I always heard Ryobi being known as the lower end brand but i have a lot of Ryobi 18v tools and seeing their 40v stuff too it seems to me that they have stepped up their game. I can't say I've personally had any issues with them. I'm personally looking into the 80v greenworks snowblower though as I already have lot of 80v tools but if the 40v Ryobi faired well I think the 80v will do well too.
I've got a 40v Greenworks trolling motor for the dingy on our boat, love it no messing with fuel trying to store the motor when not in use. That 80v one should be a beast. 😎

Was the snow lite and fluffy or a heavier, wetter snow? I'm in the northeast us and it's typically a wetter snow.
Bit of a mix.. Fresh and dry from the sky along with some wet packed in from the plow going by.
Great video. Looking to get one soon. But I'm trying to decide between the Ryobi, Ego, Snow Joe and Toro 2- stage snow blowers. All are similarly priced except the Toro being a few hundred dollars more.
I do like that 4 batteries are included with the Ryobi. I would probably just run 2 batteries until they die then pop in the second pair and charge the first pair.
I live in SNJ (closer to Philly). We haven't had a real good snow storm in a while. Usually just get a few storms with about 3-4 inches and 1 with around 6-8".
Also thinking about getting a new Ryobi cordless lawn mower (think they use the same batteries). If so, that would give me 6 batteries to use. With that being said, it probably makes the most sense to buy the Ryobi snowblower. If it's similar to the other three, then it's a done deal.
I liked the fact the Toro's discharge shoot control is a joystick that does postion and angle all on the same control. I most likely would have gotten the Toro had I not already had a garage full of Ryobi 40v tools.
I bought the toro unit...its great 👍. The ryobi looks like it's a nice machine too. I agree, my snowblower greatly exceeded my expectations

Like “all” batteries, in these type of yard chore appliances, the life expectancy are abysmally premature. Replacement costs gouge the consumer, and with planed obsolescence the batteries soon become unavailable. NO THANKS!

Handles it the same as gas powered unit of the same size does. Maybe a little better since the electric has more torque than a gas one.
My snow removal technique is to go to Tampa or Atlanta in February and return in mid March.

Actually so far I have seem much different playing with the auger speed. Other than the battiers last a lot longer at low speed

Does Ariens still make an electric version? I didn't see anything on thier website, and Google brings up a Consumer Report article from 2010.
How did it do with the ice berg at the end of the driveway from the snowplows
It slowed a little. But the electric drive gives it a ton of torque so really wasn't much of an issue.
Pretty impressive and seems to be a good value with all those batteries. I’m surprised at how floppy the chute is. And it would be nice if it had electric chute controls.
as someone with an electric chute. the manual ones seem to be more reliable and faster. after slush my electrics froze twice. never had that issue with manual levers.
What most people don’t know is that Ryobi and Milwaukee are under the same company. So Ryobi is basically the homeowners version of a great commercial brand.
I have a gas blower with the same 'floating' chute issue. irritating - snow deflection is enough to make the chute turn. I fixed it by making some shims for the chute to rest on that lay on the flanges underneath. solved 85% of the problem.
What was the thickness of the "shims" (preferrably in mm) If you dont mind sharing?
@@jbuttmcse It's hard to say as these were 'cut to fit' pieces of uhmw polyethylene. I used this because it had to be weatherproof. I'd say no more than 3mm. Trust me, they were a pain to cut and fit. I saw the ryobi 2 stage today and I think that chute would drive me nuts.

great video , question is it ok to keep those type of battery's in the garage i mean with the cold ? and do u keep ur charger plugged in all the times? i hear some say keep the battery in a room temp setting does it matter ? thanks
I keep mine in the house. The cold will effect their performance. So I charge then and take them off the charger.

Funny you asked, I was working on making a follow up video on it. Overall I've very happy, I've got it down to being able to clean the whole driveway without having to wait for battiers to charge. Biggest hold back now is the price. They raised it by $500 over last year. So it would be a hard item to sell me this year simply based on price.

Sadly that does seem to be normal... Few others have suggested using some foam weather stripping to fill the space. Might be something I try for next winter.

No way would I buy a battery powered blower. Start getting in deep snow and the unit has to start pushing out a lot of torque, those battery will drain very fast. Save the battery's for a drill or a skill saw and leave the heavy work to gas.
If batteries were not OK in the cold you would never have been able to start normally aspirated engine in -30F over the last 50, 60 and more years. Batteries can handle the cold temperatures. It's one of those myths about batteries. Some loss but not much and once active they recover.
Probably late with this comment but the EGO comes with 2 x 7.5ah batteries and a dual charger.

It handles wetsnow as well as its gas counter part in the same size does. But with no wet belt slippage.

Every gas blower has variable speed on the auger/fan. It's a throttle.
Also, missing two M-8 1.25 nuts on chute handle down by the wheels. I had to get them from home depot. They are also in the instruction manual, but not in the box.
If you run all 4 batteries. The unit will switch between sets of one set runs down. And if needed. The unit can switch itself. To run on all 4 batteries. Making it a 80v blower.
5:40 he actually starts using it. cant stand slow starting videos i almost fell asleep....
What are your thoughts on aftermarket batteries for this?
I would never use aftermarket batteries. For one, they do not have a BMS circuit in them to correctly balance the cells as they charge or discharged. making them a fire hazard. Its the reason you look in the news and see all the battery scooters catching on fire because of the knock off batteries. Second, go watch any video on YT where they compare OEM vs aftermarket. The originals outlast the knock off nearly twice as long. So spend half the money you get half the battery.
I would need to see a branch some pebbles occasional big rock to convince me to go electric. Also how long does it last and charge because.... ⛽ go
When I started looking back in October.. The other brands where only advertising 1 battery kits with thier 2 stage units. Maybe just a typo at the time, but I ensure everyone, thats what was being advertised.
And yes it's EGO not ergo 🤣🤣🤣
What about long term durability, other online reviews talk about the death click when they try to start up after a non usage period and it only clicks. Please let us know about your experience, thanks!
@@paulbendel986 yup had the death click happen to me as well. Seems something is freezing up with the aguer motor. Ryobi tech support solution was place the unit somewhere it could warm up above freezing. And to ensure the aguer is clear of all snow when finished using it. Left it outside in the sun for a few hours and that seemed to fix it for me. Not a viable solution from Ryobi however in my opinion.
The way this video is trending, it should hit 50k views in a few more days. When it does I'll call Ryobi back and press them more, and explain maybe this video needs a follow up if they don't come up with a more realistic fix for the issue.
It sounds like it struggles a bit compared to the e-go. But then the ego is 56V and this only 40V. But the fact you have to put it somewhere warm for it to function, is ridicolously a totally no go!
Great job but one thing I found doing 50 accounts with that won’t cut it batteries do not like cold only for a short period of time!
Toro's 2 60v stage blower comes with 2 batteries and has room for 3.
Must be an up date to the kit.. When I was looking the Toro only came with one battery.

Charger is a smart charger so it doesn't cook the batteries. So batteries need to be in prime state for max charge.
So depending on how hard on them you are. Kill them dead to the point the unit won't even power up and let them sit in a cold garage for a few days. Can take up to 3 hours to charge a pair of them.
Run the batteries down until the 25% lights are flashing, charge in a warm area. Takes about an hour per pair.

It was.. But that was a once in 5 year storm. I used it the rest of winter and in 5 or 6 inches of snow it did the whole driveway and still had battery left.
Was looking at Ego but after some other Ryobi buys and your review I think I'm sold.
Do a real test, wet heavy snow, 10 inches with a layer of ice. Light fluffy snow is NOT a test.

Are you able to use one hand mode by holding the drive? Mine won't work and I'm not sure if it's just missing a pin or if it's a bigger issue..
Yes, the aguer handle will stay down and locked as long as the drive handle is held down just like on gas versions.

Yes, I just had that issue as well with tue auger this week. Looking at the Reddit group for Ryobi, seems thats a common issue thats popping up. Snow.must be getting in somewhere and freezing the motor. The fix has been to warm the unit up with a heater or bring it to a heated area so it can thaw out. I put mine in the sun for a few hours yesterday at it was above freezing, and it's working again. I've reached out to Ryobi customer service, but they haven't replied yet.

All my power tools are Ryobi, so I am not surprised that this is an impressive machine. Here are my problems with battery machines like this: It took a full 4 battery recharge to complete the job / In 4 years the batteries will have to be replaced (trust me) at a cost of $600 / The purchase price is $1700
My basic gas Briggs 24'' 208 cc two stage accomplished a similar removal in the same snowstorm in about the same time. The Briggs cost me $699 and will last 10 years minimum. That said, the maintenance of the Ryobi is almost nil. Whatever math works for the end user I suppose.

Litium (Li-ion) batteries last approxiamately in real life 300 to 500 charge cycles. Being its a snowblower, those will last him until he dies. I mean even in the worst winter you wont need to use that blower more than 5-6 times. Hell this year we only had 2 major storms worth plowing and I live in NB, Canada. Winteres are getting shorter. The new batteries aint like the old Ni-cad batteries my dewalt takes. Last a lot longer now.

I live on lake Superior and we've had about 15 heavy snows so far, even so I think electric would last longer than a gas blower.
Gas+ oil change per year is about $125, so the batteries last 20 years it's paid for itself over the gas version. If they last 10 years it's break even with the gas version.
This snow blower costs $2400 + tax. It's so expensive that I'm on the fence if I should hire snow removal company ($300/year) or should I invest $2400 + tx into this snow blower.
Ya the price increase this year is crazy.. It was only $1789+tax last year when I bought it. If I could get my driveway done for $300/year I know what I'd be doing 🤣🤣
