These videos are so great. Seeing someone go from a no budget short film, to a Hollywood horror movie, to a freaking superhero movie?! It’s crazy inspiring.
i'm from argentina, and i was very sad when i found out our country could not participate in the short contest, i hope in the future you make a similar contest worldwide on your own, it's nice to see someone who 'made it' helping new talent get oportunities. Enjoy your work, keep scaring us. :)
y'all's short horror films are so much better than almost everything else out there right now!! like, almost every other modern horror can be fully summed up as "the haunted cell phone" lmao, whereas your plots are always super original and engaging even without any dialogue (:
Been making short films in my apartment for about 8 years. Your imagination has to kick in to high gear, when all you have is yourself and the limited space around you. At times, it can be a bitch.
Mr. Sandberg, I somehow missed your name while watching Annabelle Creation, but instantly recognized your work during the light bulb scene. I enjoy the hell out of your short and feature-length films and can't wait to see what you do next. Your take on horror is, in my opinion, the best kind of horror! Thanks for the scares and the fun!
I wish I'd entered this, been a follower of your work since the 'Who'sThere' competition you won with Lights Out. I made a short for that but didn't get it finished in time. I'm gonna watch the rest of your series as you really know your stuff man. Can't wait to see Shazam too
I am glad that you mentioned about how you watched the short film and you see the similarities as other feature films and you know where it is taking off. I notice that it is hard to be original at times for the climax and resolution of the stories today.
I would have the two kids have to prove to me which one is real by asking a series of personal questions that only my true son would know... only to come to realize that my son doesn't really know me because I work too much so I bring my son and the demon on a camping and fishing trip because the more the merrier - happy ending, what a twist!
Thank you so much, I've started making shorts 3 years ago and still going on even though I don't have a huge audience and I just shot everything in my shitty smartphone with little to no gear. But still I love to make those because its my passion, specially horror movies.
I've seen a LOT of the short films based on two-sentence horror stories like that. I've never found any of them to be particularly good because the part of the two sentence horror story-type formula that works is that delivery. One sentence to set up and then another to shatter your expectations. It works great on paper but the short films always fall short on that delivery, usually cause they try to make more of it by then showing us a monster rather than leaving the mystery of that cliffhanger.
Really good videos, just getting into moving image and it's nice to find informative film making on youtube that are not just "bros" taking products out of boxes and creaming their pants.
Your tutorial is a horror movie... (I just want to learn the filmmaking tips, but the clips you used, thats so creepy! lol damn, you are a good horror movie filmmaker!)
The Lights out, Light switch flick scene one was one of the two times I almost shit my pants watching a horror movie. The only other time was the lawnmower scene in sinister.
Hey David, I have a question, well, sort of. I really enjoy making films, you know being behind the camera and all. But I also love acting in films too, anytime I create a short and have an actor, I'm never quite happy with how they act, and when I'm acting in other shorts, I'm never quite happy about other peoples work behind the camera as they never have a good vision. I'd love to sent a short for the contest, but I am just really stuck on what to do in that aspect. Do you have any advice? I mean you were lucky with your shorts as Lotta is a really good actress lol! :)
how good quality does the film have to be? I'm pretty broke to be honest but I'm really interested in this and all I have to film with is an old fujifilm camera, a knock off go pro, and my smartphone. Also are we able to mix an audio track on some software with preexisting sound bits like sonar?
The cheaper cameras tend to have smaller sensors, which means they let less light in. This in turn means that you may need to use better lighting for your film. Maybe learn all you can about sound - great sound is even more important than perfect images. You can mix sound in free video software such as Windows Movie maker ( if that's still around) and also other cheap software. Check for tutorials on UA-cam for guidance on whatever you're using. So, do the best lighting and sound you can afford! The result might surprise you.
One thing I was meaning to ask prior to my comment from before, the whole DOLL repor, which has been coming out of the woodwork lately that I was curious as to what drew you to the title ?
Anyone complaining about being too young for this particular competition, do remember that you'll have years and years of being OVER 18 ahead of you! I'm pretty sure that Ponysmasher and other great folk will do heaps more competitions in the future. In the meantime, try to soak up as much information as possible from guys like David. And keep practising with whatever video camera you can get a hold of!
I am very much inspired by you. I am trying to make a short film with a mobile phone and a Canon camcorder. I will send you after completion for your valuable suggestions and comments. Thank you very much for inspiring your followers.
Production value is one thing, but a good story well executed is the absolute must. If this means a lower production value but a higher quality of narration, I'll buy that every time. You can put the most expensive packaging around a turd, it will remain a turd.
Quick question. In the story I wrote I have a scene with the tv playing an old movie. I purposely picked that movie because it is public domain. Would I be able to use this scene in the contest? If not I will rewrite this part. Thanks in advance and really looking forward to sharing this film with you!
"even bad movies can be entertaining if you have smth entertaining in them" I feel like Rayan Johnson took this to heart watching ur vid. And nothing else)
In my submission I'm going to have a little girl ask her dad to check for monsters underneath her bed and when the dad checks for monsters, then there will be a jump scare of a monster lunging at him from underneath the bed. That will surprise him and be different!!!
what if... I do the shortfilm eventhough I am not 18 and I don't live in any of those countries, and my short is still good? Can I at least try to compete ?? Please?
Son says: - Dad, something is under my bed... Dad looks there and sees there his son telling him: - Dad, something is in my bed... Dad runs away... So that was the way that two twins kidding their new stepfather.
If only I didn't live in Finland😂 Thought my dad said to participate anyway even though I couldn't win. But I will not do that. Good luck to everyone who can participate.
i couldnt finish the video because you kept spoiling your short films. :( Regardless you give excellent tips and I will definitely watch more once I binge watch your films
The rules say less than approximately 2 minutes, and the other text says less than two minutes strictly. So can the short be 2:15 seconds long or less than two minutes period
I guess. It's just I really love his channel and I'm dying to enter. I know it's kind of an overreaction but he's really an inspiration and I wish I was older to get the chance.
yeahhh i remember that feeling when i was younger too! but just try and remember there are legal reasons people have to make those type of rules for contests that involve money or other prizes - and also that contests like this will totally happen again when u are old enough to have the chance (:
These videos are so great. Seeing someone go from a no budget short film, to a Hollywood horror movie, to a freaking superhero movie?! It’s crazy inspiring.
This is great, I'd tune in every week to listen to you talk about about filmmaking.
It's amazing, how you help little producers and have great ideas. It's just awesome. We'll be in the contest.

Your eyebrows always on fleek!)
You have a wonderful actress with you too! Together you make a power team/couple :)
Thanks for the great tips but unfortunately I am only 16. Good Luck for Annabelle Creation and future projects.
As an introvert, the idea that the most horrendous/terrifying thing is being "not alone" is kind of hilarious when you think about it

Really nice video! thanks for sharing your knowledge!!
Thank you for the video! I'm far from filmmaking but those are good tips. P.S I enjoy your short films
Thanks for the advice David!
Great content 👍 much on our own thoughts ! Originality is the ultimate key 🔑. Too many instances have been exhaustingly overdone.

To all our beginners in film or any other talent. Continue to work hard!!! Success will meet u at the top.
Thanks for the tips David!

I am going to try and incorporate something similar to Conjuring/Annabelle style as best as I can David. I'm excited
