1:58 I watched a 60 Minutes interview with Quentin Tarantino one time. During the interview, he said that even though he didn't know how to do everything, (because he didn't go to film school) he realized that he didn't need to, but instead, he needed to hire people who are good at their job. Then, he just needed to communicate clearly what his vision was to them. That way they could use their specialized skills to make it a reality. What's more, I think having a background of doing everything yourself gives you an overview, as you said, to the difficulty of the specific vision you want accomplished. Having that background would then make communication easier as you would be able to understand the complications the professional faces, and work better with them to find a solution.

You are my favorite director of all time. I'm not just saying that. You have already given so much and are becoming so big in the industry. You give back more then any director does these days. This video for example... I don't see other directors doing this unless it was done for them and they get interviewed. You actually do it all yourself and even filming you do a lot of things yourself like some affects. David you really do inspire me to try harder and hopefully one day we will work together sometime.

This is similar to Terry Gilliam's advice to a young Tarantino in the early 90's. Another one of my favorites is Robert Rodriguez "Too many creative people don’t wanna learn how to be technical, so what happens? They become dependent on technical people. Become technical. You can learn that. If you’re creative and technical, you’re unstoppable.”

And there's not much jumpscares, which I'm very glad of. Because all the horror movies these days are about jumpscares, it's making horror movies boring.. And when I saw Lotta in the movie, I felt very happy! I used to watch her performance in all your videos and now she's on the big screen! So proud of you, David! Thank you so much for this.. I wish i had this video like 3 weeks ago but better late then never. I am in the midst of directing my first feature and in my final week of filming. When you said " Tell people what you want... because i have done so much by myself out of necessity " That quote there has exactly hit the nail on the head for me. My weakest points are exactly that. i have to get better with explaining my idea and making sure that the other departments understand it. Please Please please keep making heaps more director videos. HOLY SHIT! This has released SO much of my anxiety of aspiring to be a director. I use to feel like a director needed to be the wise old sage on the set who knew every detail from every department and was able to spot what he wanted or needed in a shot! Thanks so much for this video David!!!

I literally used to dream about the type of subjects your randomly talking about lol like for example... imagine being on set as director with no on set experience & getting asked about things that you don’t know ? This is really cool to watch, especially considering it's directing a horror film which is the genre I'm most interested in. I've never done filmmaking but I do edit trailers/TV spots from movies (just for fun). There's always shots I love that I always wanna include when I make the edits, and that's sparked me to just have ideas start bouncing around in my head, some even enough to a make full scene but attached to no plot really. I actually never did realize how much influence a director has in all the departments in help making a film, and the ideas that have bounced around in my head are ideas that come from multiple departments, so having influence in all of those to help create your vision as a director is pretty freaking cool.
Wow so I just finished watching the video and I can't express how much I related when you said that you relied on yourself for a long time because that's literally how our shorts are. You are such an inspiration to our whole team. Expect us to watch Annabelle opening night!

So SO cool to see you guys exchanging ideas on set; I think the whole notion of 'big budget Hollywood movies' is that everything is very thought and out there's not a lot of room for experimenting, or that improvisation is frowned upon, etc etc. But it's nice to see you guys talking about which lens to have, or how much depth of field you'd like in the shot, (or even you clearly testing out the shot with your eyes at 4:07). It's nice to see the collaboration and problem solving that I know a lot of low-no budget filmmakers like myself are very used to on much smaller and less thought out sets. Might seem like a small thing but it makes our goals and dreams seem a little more achievable
I hope you do trailer breakdowns, behind the scenes and these types of directing videos when you tackle Shazam. I'm curious as to how the scope, crew and budget (which i'm sure will be the biggest you've worked with so far) affects your filmmaking and what you learn from it.
This is literally the best movie of the Conjuring universe so far, in my opinion. The writing is incredible. It’s incredibly terrifying. It’s an incredible movie.

This is really cool to watch, especially considering it's directing a horror film which is the genre I'm most interested in. I've never done filmmaking but I do edit trailers/TV spots from movies (just for fun). There's always shots I love that I always wanna include when I make the edits, and that's sparked me to just have ideas start bouncing around in my head, some even enough to a make full scene but attached to no plot really.
I actually never did realize how much influence a director has in all the departments in help making a film, and the ideas that have bounced around in my head are ideas that come from multiple departments, so having influence in all of those to help create your vision as a director is pretty freaking cool.
That was such an excellent video, thank you for taking the time to create this.

This is awesome. Also dug the way you added tricks from your short films into this feature (sheet scene, lightbulbs turning, etc.)
So SO cool to see you guys exchanging ideas on set; I think the whole notion of 'big budget Hollywood movies' is that everything is very thought and out there's not a lot of room for experimenting, or that improvisation is frowned upon, etc etc. But it's nice to see you guys talking about which lens to have, or how much depth of field you'd like in the shot, (or even you clearly testing out the shot with your eyes at 4:07). It's nice to see the collaboration and problem solving that I know a lot of low-no budget filmmakers like myself are very used to on much smaller and less thought out sets.
Might seem like a small thing but it makes our goals and dreams seem a little more achievable
I hope you do trailer breakdowns, behind the scenes and these types of directing videos when you tackle Shazam. I'm curious as to how the scope, crew and budget (which i'm sure will be the biggest you've worked with so far) affects your filmmaking and what you learn from it.
