You are correct my friend!!! First shot was 318 yards, second was 220. Both went down up the hill after giving us a 2 hour track zigging & weaving through the bush. I need to show more of the tracking & Wolf hugs - my latest video of me spot & stalking the brown & black Wolf on hockey skates, a lot of comments wished I would have given them a nice Wolf hug ending. I thought UA-cam did not like dead animals, blood, etc... But its only the blood that you can't show, but even then you can make the footage black & white & it won't get taken down so thats what I will do moving forward!
So happy to see a video from you! I hope you got at least one wolf! When i was in Red Lake and out in the bush, I would often paddle my boat like that. It works well. I also used a canoe quite often, so I quickly learned how to hold and angle the paddle, so i didn't have to continually switch sides, except for when i got tired. Nice to see you back!! God bless!

I hear you... UA-cam dislikes anything deceased, or any showing of blood. Some folks showcase the footage in black & white, which is something I may try in the future! Good observation - Lifejackets are necessary, even in the Summer temps when the water is like a bath tub. I've had some scares in my life & now I don't get anywhere near water without a lifejacket on!
Do find the timing of the wolf visits to bait to be totally random and any daylight hour equal, or do you see any pattern to when they come? I have a hunt starting Jan 1, 24. Trying to decide whether to try to sit daylight to dark or concentrate on a shorter time span. My concern is at my age, I don't think I can deal with the cold all day.
It varies. I’ve had them consistently tending to the bait during the morning as the sun rises, then they’ll switch to feeding before dark, or even at 1-3AM. There are consistencies but sitting all day for Wolf allows you to see the smaller wolves coming in to grab a bite while the bigger wolves are laying down. You have more opportunity to see more through an entire day of sitting. Bring a thermos of Tea, get some heated socks or hand warmers & toss them in your boots. Heck, get the sticky hand warmer pads & slap one on your back & one on your chest to stay warm. If you have a blind, just bring a little heater if you can - even if it’s a methyl hydrate toilet paper heater! (Google it lol)
Franklin is a guide - but we’re like brothers, just 40 year age difference apart 😂 so not really guided, but technically anytime I spend time with Franklin it’s like being guided… I’m very grateful to have him around to learn from. He usually has the winter months booked but winter has been a bit delayed this year so he gave me a chance to smack 2 if we saw some. Ended up starting 2 new bait sites that same day & they are both full of wolves now. We’re positive he has 2 packs living in his area he guides in because they had a giant fight on the ice the other night.
@NorthCanadaFishing I am down for that. Still want to try ice fishing Superior but if that is going to happen. It will be end of February. I wouldn't trust the January ice, not this year...

I am in the middle of reviewing UA-cams policy regarding 🩸& hunting but have yet to find out where it states I cannot show 🩸 or a deceased animal, so I maybe could have did my big Wolf hug that I normally do. I talk about changing things to greyscale so that the video isn't taken down, but I don't know if that even matters anymore. In the end of the day, the level of censorship you sometimes have to do for UA-cam is ridiculous.. As you can hear, I had to mute all the swearing during my adrenaline rush LOL but also I don't want any kids to watch & get influenced by my trucker mouth hahahahhaha
Usually see a few wolves up Snake , Chikuni and the rail bed. Didn't see or hear any this year. Heard them last year but couldn't get a bead on any of them 😞. One of my best wolf encouters happened about 10 yrs ago. Shot a young bull and had sent my hunting buddy back to camp to grab the gear and the boys to get him out of the cut. I went as close as I could with my atv and just sat on the bike waiting for the gang to arrive when all of a sudden I had a whole pack just on the inside of the bush edge(about 50 yds) start howling like mad(of course they were in the thick stuff and just out of eye sight) at the moment it was sureal being so close yet it was hair raising as well, especially since I had 3 rounds in my pocket.....LOL
LOL funny you say that, down in Ear Falls I had something similar occur. They were 40 yards to my right in the bush as I was walking out at dusk back to the truck from deer hunting. They lit up howling & all the hairs on my body stuck up, just such a wild feeling having them so close!!!!
@Deerscat 804 Highway has lots of deer. Reddit Road off 804 Hwy is good too. Then also April road! I highly recommend Red Bluff Creek road "50.0130920, -93.3267600" along Hwy 105 just north of Red Lake Road. Either walk the bush, or go set up on a heavily used deer trail 👍
@@Beachnut215 There are but far & few between compared to Ear Falls itself & south of Ear Falls. I'd say McKenzie Island has the most deer in Red Lake but just because its an island & they feel safe there 3 out of 4 seasons of any given year. I've seen wolves drag deer across Howey Bay when it freezes over so winter can be harsh for the deer whether its snow, wolves, or whatever. Another good road in Ear Falls would be Gold Pines but you have to check the maps to ensure you are within the firearm discharge area because if you are too close to Ear Falls you can't be slinging rounds off - Should be able to find it online in a PDF format somewhere... I know Red Lake has a discharge firearm map & it gives you a good radius to be aware of when hunting to ensure you're lawful when discharging.
Thank ya kindly!!! You can snare them if you have your trappers licence & are on your designated trap-line. But if you are just hunting Crown Land (public land), or private land, you can only utilize a firearm or bow/crossbow. “UP”? Upper peninsula? As in Alaska? I’m curious now!

I've heard of areas prohibiting Wolf hunting - Which makes no sense to me... I guarantee when you & the team are out hunting you see a number of Wolves while attempting to harvest a Deer or Moose. Definitely no shortage of them it seems.@@boygirlandadad5814

The fact of the matter is our Departments(s) of Natural Resources are a institution of financial profit and not of game management. Residents are quitting outdoor sports and its a waterfall effect, take my neighbor as a case in point; a lifelong coyote trapper that stopped trapping because all he would catch is wolf's. Super cool pictures for sure but a pita to release several wolf's daily. Then he noticed a trend; usually a trapped wolf takes off like shot out of a gun when released but more and more often a wolf would run off a few yards then stop, check him out and circle around for a while. So he said it was getting too sketchy. So less and less people are trapping and big game hunting which just opens the door for even more predation. My friends disabled father spent 11 full days sitting in his deer blind with a crossbow before our rifle season. He saw zero deer but several wolf's. My rifle deer season was 6 days afield, and I still hunt, I saw a fork horn and a spike but not a single other deer, not a doe, fawn or a fleeting tail. It's over. Thanks for letting me rant.

The one black wolf is still out there… he’s giant & we call him “Big Bully” because he won’t allow any of the new pups eat off the bait…. @@PatterningNature I'm a big fan of the caliber, but I have to question your choice in projectiles as match bullets were designed for putting holes in paper and not critters. IMO, I think it would be best to use a much lighter hunting bullet for varmints so the bullet disintegrates shortly after impact. Just out of curiosity, are those 77's passing right through? Also, have you ever used the 223 for deer? I think the 60 to 64 grain bullet options out there would make for some great venison medicine, IMO.
@@jimdent351 you are correct my friend! The only reason I use these are due to the weight & the fact they penetrate right through the animal. That 2nd Wolf I shot - the round went right through both front legs & into the boulder behind him… he most definitely did not drop immediately but somehow ran 115 yards up the hill & then laid down. Wolves are extremely tough & resilient. And yeah actually .223 is my overall hunting calibre - I shot a 8 pointer last year & dropped him in his tracks. But thinking back, one Wolf last year did not have an exit wound so now I’m curious to try the 60 or 64 grain you mentioned.
@@PatterningNature My opinion, and that's all it is, so don't think I'm telling you what to do because that's not my intent but I've heard that fast moving varmint bullets work great on coyotes and wolves because they make tiny little entrance holes but don't exit because they break apart so quickly after impact. No exit hole equals a nice pelt and a 100% energy dump. HOWEVER, I would test this theory before putting it into a real world hunting situation With deer it is most desirable for a bullet that expands well but holds together for deep penetration. That's why my research had lead me to the 60 to 65 grain bullet range for deer. In fact Winchester produces a 223 64 grain cartridge that they market for deer. I could never get great accuracy out of them with my Tikka but they would have been just fine for hunting. When it comes to reloading I like the 60 gr Nosler Partition, 62 gr Speer Gold Dot, and the 65 gr Sierra Game King. I haven't, however had a chance for load development due to numerous factors going on right now. Another thing that my research has brought me to is rifling twist rate. A slow twist such as 1/12 likes the lighter short bullets, but the slower twist rates such as 1/8 love the heavier and longer bullets. Again my ability to test these theories are limited to different life factors as of this time. That's just my 2 cents so do with it as you will. I just found your channel and love some great Canadian content. I'm in Southern ON and I just subbed. Keep them coming!

I think you're right brother - From the vocalization of Ravens & Wolves, to the sight of them... they rely on one another just like a baby relies on its mother for milk. Also... I'm unsure Ravens do this, but Crows actually will have a "funeral" for other Crows that pass away... Both birds are such intelligent animals. I've stated multiple times now that as I grow older my heart grows bigger... I think I will be photographing Wolves more & more as time goes on VS. shooting them... I've thought about hiring someone... but then I lose the "rawness" of my videos. ....But yes... Between seeing my face up close to the camera, to me sniffling because my nose is running in -40... you guys get it all & practically unedited (to a point) LOL And you know, life is not perfect... we sometimes get skunked while fishing, or hunting, and I'd rather show the world the truth VS. this polished manipulated video that I edited & coloured. But then again there is nothing wrong with polished videos, they look wonderful... its just not "me". Maybe someday my thoughts will change on that, but I've always been a firm believer in keeping things as simple as you can.
Wolf tastes pretty rancid because of their eating habits (eating fresh kills, but also scavenging off rotting flesh). Typically, the first bite of Wolf will have you never wanting to taste it again - but in a pinch you can eat if (if you had to for survival situations). If you ever do cook Wolf, treat it like Bear - cook it above 160F to ensure parasites are killed, etc…
@@jx-gy3od I don’t think it’s a normal thing to eat wolf, but hey there is a first (and last LOL) for everything right? Yeah, they are highly populated this far north, even 6 hours south of us have a high population that travel between Minnesota & Ontario, some travelling 2,500kms or more to get to their winter feeding grounds. We do have Coyotes up here but the last time I saw one it was being chased by a Wolf so they don’t get that populated because of the pressure of the Wolves & other predators like Wolverines.

Amazing the winter we have had so far! Some snow on the ground but more temperatures above zero right up to Christmas!!! Almost had a green Christmas!

Yup, they'll run for awhile after being hit. I was shocked how far they can go on adrenaline.
They are powerhouses!!!! Often times you just gotta let them run & eventually they'll lay down & hide to pass away. They can take a lot though.

And yeah actually .223 is my overall hunting calibre - I shot a 8 pointer last year & dropped him in his tracks.
But thinking back, one Wolf last year did not have an exit wound so now I’m curious to try the 60 or 64 grain you mentioned.
@@PatterningNature My opinion, and that's all it is, so don't think I'm telling you what to do because that's not my intent but I've heard that fast moving varmint bullets work great on coyotes and wolves because they make tiny little entrance holes but don't exit because they break apart so quickly after impact. No exit hole equals a nice pelt and a 100% energy dump. HOWEVER, I would test this theory before putting it into a real world hunting situation
With deer it is most desirable for a bullet that expands well but holds together for deep penetration. That's why my research had lead me to the 60 to 65 grain bullet range for deer. In fact Winchester produces a 223 64 grain cartridge that they market for deer. I could never get great accuracy out of them with my Tikka but they would have been just fine for hunting. When it comes to reloading I like the 60 gr Nosler Partition, 62 gr Speer Gold Dot, and the 65 gr Sierra Game King. I haven't, however had a chance for load development due to numerous factors going on right now.
Another thing that my research has brought me to is rifling twist rate. A slow twist such as 1/12 likes the lighter short bullets, but the slower twist rates such as 1/8 love the heavier and longer bullets. Again my ability to test these theories are limited to different life factors as of this time.

And you’re 100% about the pelt & exit wounds - heck that makes me think back to when Wolf & Yote pelts use to be worth some money… not anymore though sadly…

I think you're right brother - From the vocalization of Ravens & Wolves, to the sight of them... they rely on one another just like a baby relies on its mother for milk.
Also... I'm unsure Ravens do this, but Crows actually will have a "funeral" for other Crows that pass away... Both birds are such intelligent animals.
I've stated multiple times now that as I grow older my heart grows bigger... I think I will be photographing Wolves more & more as time goes on VS. shooting them...

I've thought about hiring someone... but then I lose the "rawness" of my videos.
....But yes... Between seeing my face up close to the camera, to me sniffling because my nose is running in -40... you guys get it all & practically unedited (to a point) LOL
And you know, life is not perfect... we sometimes get skunked while fishing, or hunting, and I'd rather show the world the truth VS. this polished manipulated video that I edited & coloured. But then again there is nothing wrong with polished videos, they look wonderful... its just not "me".
Maybe someday my thoughts will change on that, but I've always been a firm believer in keeping things as simple as you can.

How did the wolf taste?
Wolf tastes pretty rancid because of their eating habits (eating fresh kills, but also scavenging off rotting flesh).
Typically, the first bite of Wolf will have you never wanting to taste it again - but in a pinch you can eat if (if you had to for survival situations).
If you ever do cook Wolf, treat it like Bear - cook it above 160F to ensure parasites are killed, etc…

Yeah, they are highly populated this far north, even 6 hours south of us have a high population that travel between Minnesota & Ontario, some travelling 2,500kms or more to get to their winter feeding grounds.
We do have Coyotes up here but the last time I saw one it was being chased by a Wolf so they don’t get that populated because of the pressure of the Wolves & other predators like Wolverines.
