Because there are not that many visible Japanese world class athletes that you see every day, except for the World Cups or the Olympics, unless you live in Asia or Japan. In the Olympics a Japanese girl had a breakdown, which I do not judge, it seemed she was autistic and I respect neurodiverse people. The Japanese are just like everybody else. What the Japanese have going for them in terms of development is strict hierarchical respect and homogeneity, and yet that has not been enough to dethrone the US or China (or Europe in some cases) in most industries. I was in the stadium (Court 3) watching this game and what could have happened is that there was a young kid cheering very loudly for Hurkacz between every single point. At first, it was cute and funny but the kid was a bit intense, did not stop the whole match and got a bit annoying to be frank lol. That could have played against Nishioka even though he should not have been annoyed so easily. If you are a tennis fan, check also the game between Etcheverry and Shelton that occurred at Cincy where Shelton almost lost...because the same kid was cheering the same loudly way for Tommy. Fun fact: Hurkacz went right away to this kid at the end of his game and gave him his tennis racket (he knew the influence) and Shelton (even though the kid was cheering for Etcheverry) went to see the kid to give him something too...smart move as you probably want to have this kid on your side!
i was a ball girl for this tournament and his cheering all started during draper vs munar in court 4. there was a boy around his age cheering fiercely for draper and ig the other kid (shelton/hubi kid) decided to cheer as loudly as he could for munar. screamed the entire match. after jack won, he stayed for etcheverry’s match and cheered for him which brings us to shelton vs etcheverry. so yeah, that kid was working overtime for his favs this year🤣

it was my 4th group class as a kid, I was about 9, when I got a bit frustrated with the training as I thought there was lack of playing and too much focusing on leg work, so I threw a ball out of the pitch as far as I could and it landed in the parking lot. The trainer yelled and me and ordered me to go search and pick the ball and return it to the field, it took me 40 minutes to find it after looking under all of the cars parked there. That was the end of my tennis career.

Being upset/mad with yourself is one thing. But potentially putting other people at risk is inexcusable. (And I need to clarify, because some idiots with poor understanding of consequence may decide to come at me): The balls MAY not have hit anyone. But if it/they did, it could have hit someone in the face or worse. You look up, and a ball smacks you in the eye, or you're holding a hot beverage, and it knocks it out of your hand. Or what if it hits a kid? It's unlikely, but that's what being an adult is; understanding and avoiding unnecessary risk to others, because you can reason outcomes BEFORE your actions.

Notice a lot of comments that say this is unheard of and embarrassing for a Japanese. It’s funny cause this is typical behavior from western tennis players.
This is a lesson that show Japanese people aren't actually a monolith in terms of personality and we do have those sort of passionate and at times brash people - those who have watched Nishioka knows he can be a diva at times so such emotional outbursts so frankly this isn't surprising to me as it seems the tension just boiled over.
I think it's time to introduce time bans for ATP tournaments. A player's unsportsmanlike conduct is normally penalized during the match, and after the match, the ATP committee considers whether to impose an additional penalty on tournament appearances. Unfortunately, such pathetic behavior is becoming more and more common and it needs to be nipped in the bud
You all should have watched the full match to judge what happened and what Nishioka did. You should be tired of watching matches changed by doubtful MTOs whenever a player doesn't get a ball in (Hurkacz in 2nd set) and things like the stupid rain interruption called by the umpire (which seemed unneeded). Before these things happened he was totally dominating
Nishioka should team up with Rublev, that way they could get group discount when they hire a psychologist to coach them in anger management 💁♂️

Being upset/mad with yourself is one thing.
But potentially putting other people at risk is inexcusable.
(And I need to clarify, because some idiots with poor understanding of consequence may decide to come at me):
The balls MAY not have hit anyone. But if it/they did, it could have hit someone in the face or worse.
You look up, and a ball smacks you in the eye, or you're holding a hot beverage, and it knocks it out of your hand. Or what if it hits a kid?
It's unlikely, but that's what being an adult is; understanding and avoiding unnecessary risk to others, because you can reason outcomes BEFORE your actions.
He knows where to hit the ball... don't confuse your own tennis abilities with pros...

@@147betagamma that's very true, but that was bonkers. Nishioka hit the ball in the air... Not in the direction of anyone... It's not the same thing.
@@velcingilles3756 No, it's not the same thing. The penalties against Nishioka were justified, though. The umpire did a good job in applying the rules as they should be applied. Harsher penalties aren't needed but more leniency wouldn't be the right approach, either.
@@147betagamma , Alex Michelsen literally just proved our points. Also, please don't be congenial with rude/foolish people. Their tactic is to be nasty to one person, and then reasonable with someone else to encourage that person to pacify their ego. It's gross when you can see it happening.
Saw the video title and couldn't comprehend how either of these guys could wind up with a game penalty. But good to know that it wasn't the nicest guy on tour.

西岡選手はとても偉大な選手。悔しいのはわかるし、とてつもないプレッシャーなのも理解する。あのフェデラーでさえ、若い頃は手のつけようがなかった。でも、だからと言ってプロの選手にあの振る舞いはして欲しくない。こと国際大会では、もちろん自分のキャリアのためでもあるが、日本を代表して戦っていると言うことも忘れないで欲しい。
他の方のコメントにもあるが、メンタル不調があるなら、いち早くアンガーマネジメントを練習に取り入れて欲しいし、パフォーマンスでやってるなら尚更悪質。周りのチームは何をやってる？

This is a lesson that show Japanese people aren't actually a monolith in terms of personality and we do have those sort of passionate and at times brash people - those who have watched Nishioka knows he can be a diva at times so such emotional outbursts so frankly this isn't surprising to me as it seems the tension just boiled over.

I think it's time to introduce time bans for ATP tournaments. A player's unsportsmanlike conduct is normally penalized during the match, and after the match, the ATP committee considers whether to impose an additional penalty on tournament appearances. Unfortunately, such pathetic behavior is becoming more and more common and it needs to be nipped in the bud

You all should have watched the full match to judge what happened and what Nishioka did. You should be tired of watching matches changed by doubtful MTOs whenever a player doesn't get a ball in (Hurkacz in 2nd set) and things like the stupid rain interruption called by the umpire (which seemed unneeded). Before these things happened he was totally dominating
