The Scion brand was certainly really cool when it came out. it was kind of interesting though that they marketed it towards younger crowd which they did sell a lot to, but they ended up selling a lot of them to older people also, especially the XA and xB, because they were small and easy to drive and they had an easy step in height, and had a nice open interior with lots of glass making it easy to see around you.

Oh yes. I loved my tC. Bought it new in 2006 and sold it about a year and a half ago after the clutch went out at around 180k miles. I loved the auto up and down windows and the panoramic roof. You should clean the rails for the sunroof. Mine used to close like that. Or you can hold down the deflector with your left hand out the driver's side window while pressing the close button with your right. My remote buttons fell apart in the same way as this car. I tried to buy a replacement fob, but that didn't work. Ah well. Sold that car and they crushed the front bumper when loading it on the dolly. It was lowered on TRD springs. It was really reliable though.

Something that surprised me about the tC is the fact it was built in Japan; I really would've thought Toyota built it in the U.S, like they do with most other US-specific models they sell. Perhaps even more interesting is the fact that the tC shares the platform with a car called the 'Avensis'; Toyota's mid-size (to us Europeans) saloon car built in England, primarily for the European market. Small world, eh?

Well sometimes you eat the bear and sometimes the bear eats you. I've had a few cars like that. I had a early attempt at buying a cheap to drive work car back in the early 80s and ended up with a tired 74 Dodge Colt for 300 bucks. It was loud with a blown muffler but it seemed to run OK and had a automatic that shifted fine which was rare for any Japanese car of similar vintage. I drove it 5 miles home and found out why the muffler was never fixed, it had developed a very noticeable rod knock once it was warm. I sold it almost immediately for what I paid for it and it was just a bad deal all around and taught me a bunch about looking for red flags on any cheap used car I looked at after that.

unlock the hatch (either by pressing unlock twice on the keyfob or using the power unlock toggle on the driver's door), then step up behind the car, place your hand underneath the lip above the license plate, and when you feel underneath, you will hit a plastic/rubber bar. Push upward on it to engage the electronic latch release. Once it is released, the hatch will lift open a few inches and you can then lift it completely open.

It's always soul crushing to see a car owned by a person that treats it like a tool to be used as a means to an end, not as the art it actually is.

We can all make mistooks, but the golden rule is never buy a car in the dark. Even a good car in the dark can look bad in the daylight especially when panel respray has not been matched correctly. Still no doubt it will make a nice little runner for someone on a low budget who is not fussy about looks. Some of the rough looking cars really can be excellent runners!

My 2006 tC has 254000 miles and still going strong... Honestly like styling better than Camry and Corolla. Only problem with even cool cars this reliable is you get tired of them long before they wear out. You might try hitting door unlock button on driver door and then trying the rear hatch.. Sometimes works if the remote doesn't. That hatch handle is a weak link. It will break off in your hand shortly after the rear hatch struts wear out. Maybe the only part of that car subject to a recall. Agree with your decision to let this one go.. It is just too beat.. Makes me a little sad.. Find a factory supercharged 1st gen and do a project series on that one.. That would be sweet!

Moral of the story: Only buy old rebult-title cars (e.g. 2005, etc.) because they can become Total Loss Salvage by just a getting a small cosmetic scratch, but everything else including engine are in excellent shape 👌

What JR calls a "J" turn, we call a "bootleg 180." Bootleg because that is the maneuver bootleggers used to escape from the Revenuer and 180 because it is a 180 degree rotation.

That car would be good for a daily driver to get to work with, but there's too many exterior body issues to make sense fixing any of it. I'd fix the a/c for the summer, and keep the mechanicals in good shape. But not worth fixing the cosmetics trying to bring it back to any stage of being aesthetically nice. It's hard to believe they'd build it with no way other than the electronic trunk release to get that open. There's probably a cable somewhere that the end broke off of and it's not visible.

I've been considering a tC1 for a daily. Had one back in 2010 - loved it. Ended up with another one which was my first brand spanking new car back in 2014. Bought a 2.5 monogram 6spd. should have not of sold that car as soon as I did. Was a good ride.

Yeah this Scion why when looking for a cheap car you avoid anything "that them kids like". IE Civics, Scions, Prelude, Acura RSX/Integra, Hyundia Tiburon/Genesis coupe, Nissan 350Z/Infiniti G35. They're all going to be beat to death junk.
You gotta get into the mind set "okay what was Grandma's last car" IE any Buick with a 3.8 V6, 4 cylinder Accord, Camry, Avalon, Town Car, Grand Maruqis, basically any Lexus except the IS300(the one them damn kids like)

I work for Toyota as a master tech and own a 2009 Scion tC I bought for 300$ about 2 and a half years ago it’s been a great daily driver. Light blue paint is ugly but it doesn’t leak hasn’t given me a check engine or left me stranded and I’ve been beating on it for the time I’ve had it but it won’t quit. They are great little cars they don’t ride nicely but that’s what you get for 300$ reliable daily with ac which you need in south Florida
