Dangerous Brake Line Routing CRF300L

  • Well I was going to put the first ride of the CRF300L video out today (its up on patreon) but felt this video needed to leapfrog it. The sooner the better I think. I've seen several videos and post now about the CRF300L brake line and how it interferes with the dash. The front brake line goes right over the instrument gage, a common issue with dual sports. So to fix it many are using a zip-tie to pull it down and attaching it to the handlebars. This seems like a good fix but there is a real danger in doing so which I will explain. Not trying to beat anyone up for this. Just want to get ahead of bad information before it becomes one of those things everyone is doing. First ride video of the CRF300L can wait.

    I have the 300L also and yeah, mine was directly in front of the display. I needed to rotate my bars forward for ergonomic reasons. That also moved the brake line above the display and out my view. Good that you did this video. I've seen people wedging the brake line between the display and the front fairing plastic, and advising people to do similar. Yikes!

  • @timsatch9198
    @timsatch9198 2 роки тому +2

    Very good video and explanation, much of which I totally agree with, BUT the brake line is rediculessly long and can only get longer as the forks compress. I agree that nothing should be done with the original rubber line, but replacing it with a more appropriate length braided line makes sense, bearing in mind it can only get longer not shorter.
    Looking forward to your solution and further excellent videos so I subscribed

    I too was annoyed by the brake line going right across the CRF300L display screen. But, also being aware that it MUST remain flexible and NOT have any un-natural bends in it, I pushed slightly forward to clear the screen and watched along the whole length to see where it reacts.
    I found that putting a zip tie between the reflector and top of the fork and pulling it ONE click at a time gave me a satisfactory view without restricting line movement, not being tight (I can easily move the zip tie) and the line has full travel because it’s tied around the protective tube and not the line itself.
    Mind you, I am 64(👴🏻) and my days of going ‘balls to the wall’ with hard riding are long gone and just like to trail ride and enjoy the outdoors.
    I will definitely keep my eye on it so it doesn’t tighten up!
    If the line were to break, the whole world will hear a loud, wheezing...
    “FFF-UUUU-HHH!”....snap, crack🤣

    Found out the hard way myself. Not on a crf300 but still, the I installed a new headlight and needed to re route the brake line slightly, I didn't notice at the time but when the suspension compressed the brake line would come up and get caught on the speedometer. Needless to say I shat my pants on the first bend... no harm done luckily. Apart from a written off pair of kegs.

    On rally bikes with a high fender (same front end as dirtbikes) there's nowhere to go for the brake line above the handlebars since the loop can get caught on the nav tower. They attach it to the tripleclamps with a P clip and make it "fold" forward/out. Since the lower fixed point of the fold is on top of the forkguard there's no actual chance of it snagging the front wheel really. Also, the brakeline is kind of stiffened up because most people attach the ico cable to it with some wireloom.

I feel like they could have done something slightly different in the design to not be so ungodly huge in front of the display. Just my 2 cents

  • @thinkdunson

    7:10 it only rises half as much as the tire. so on a 10.2" travel, 5.1" is the most it can possibly rise. think of it like a pulley... since it's looped around, the distance is halved. the straight part of the tube rises equally with the tire, but the top of the loop will be half that.

    • @TheGardenSnake
      @TheGardenSnake  3 роки тому

      Thats after the stiffener tube. Look how high that thing goes up, directly related to the height of the wheel. Yall gonna make me have to do a video where I loosen the triple clamps and push the forks up haha.

    I understand the zip tie thing would be a bad idea, but I still can’t understand why Honda made it so high to begin with. Take one look at the Kawasaki 300 and tell me why Kawi can get the brake line tucked away, but Honda can’t. I get the idea that you need a place for the line to extend upward when you compress the forks, but do you really need that much slack built in for full extensions of the forks? I’d love to see you lift the front of the bike to show exactly how far the brake line goes down when the front wheel is at the lowest point that the forks allow. I’m very curious over here, thanks!

    • @TheGardenSnake
      @TheGardenSnake  3 роки тому

      I did show that in the video, look how far it moves when riding light off road. The KLX300 is just like the CRF300L, the brake line goes right across to the master. They just got it where it's not right over the dash.
