In 1968, when “The Devil’s Brigade”, starring William Holden and Cliff Robertson among a fine cast, came out, it wasn’t too well received - well, it wasn’t received too bad, either. It (and movies like it) went sort of under the radar of the public eye, as the time of the Vietnam war caused not too much interest for this kind of entertainment.
The movie, however is one of the better examples of such military-action movies, with a fine score by the great Alex North, who once again takes something known like “Scotland The Brave” and fuses it into his own score with his unique rhythm- and orchestration styles. The main titles especially, are a musical fun ride. Enjoy!
Ahem...it’s “Scotland the Brave”.

Thank you Adam. Don't know how this happened. Corrected. :-)
Fred
The original line was "The Sock-It-To-Them war movie". If you weren't arouind then, you probably won't get it.
The Devil's Brigade has also been labeled as a knock-off of The Dirty Dozen even though it was still in production when The Dirty Dozen was released.
It came out a few months after The Dirty Dozen so got rather lost in following a movie that was a huge hit.
Its one of those iconic scores from a period where "war" movie music was pretty spectacular. Zulu, battle of the bulge, where eagles dare, so many with catchy scores. And listening to this abd the others , you knew it was a war movie.
Kelly's Heroes
Alex North, he of such sword&sandal classics as Spartacus and Cleopatra. Spartacus is one of the most beautiful music scores I've ever heard, and it WAS the best thing for or of Cleopatra.
Brings back memories of AIT and Fort Dix!
DC Comics' Star Spangled War Stories with WW2 era GI's battling the axis, usually the Japanese and always, the dinosaurs.
God Bless You Fred ! I'll Be Forever Both Grateful To You And Forever In Your Debt For This True Act Of Kindness And Thoughtfulness On Your Part In Posting My Request For This Cool WWII Movie " The Devil's Brigade " , Thank You My Very Dear Friend ! I'm sitting here listening to it Fred And I LOVE IT , TRULY LOVE IT ! Thank You Once Again !
Hello Frank,
sure thing! It is truly a fine score, by Mr. North and I am glad you like it (and this suite). :-)
Fred
the music is amazing, thank you for uploading it!
I agree. I only just watched it for the first time a couple of Memorial Days (years) ago. I was surprised at how moving it was-most especially in regards to male bonding in wartime. And, Mr. North adds emotional weight and occasional humor to the enterprise. Thanks for posting and once again leading me to Intrada!
Alex North is another of my favorite composers. I am glad you decided to feature his work this week. A very complex and rich score indeed! Keep doing what you are doing as it is excellent.
Thanks Morlock!
It's always a pleasure to get your approval. :-)
Wish someone savvy would clip the Surrender Aftermath from the movie- poignant words to reflect on:
They say you find out what something is worth when you pay for it.
Well, la Difensa was ours now.
Not much of a mountain, really.
But I never knew that a mountain could be so tall...
... or plain rock cost so much.
We'd won a battle, but the war went on.
Beyond la Difensa lay more peaks, more Germans, more bloody fights.
Mount Remetanea, Sammucro, Radicosa, Anzio...
... and finally Rome.
As the men fought, their legend grew.
In all its history, the force never retreated...
... never surrendered an inch of ground.
But the price was high.
The American misfits and the proud Canadians...
... lay dead in a hundred fields and crossroads.
Together they had built a myth.
Too many died to keep it true.
i've been waiting for somebody on the internet to put this score on.i want the CD and the DVD!
Lively and inspiring interpretation of this finely composed suite with colorful and well united sound of all the instruments. The awesome composer/conductor leads the perfectly trained orchestra in a rhythmical tempo and with fully effective dynamics. Truly worth listening!
Very beautiful. I didn't know that score.
i hear a bit of the music of The Outrage and the rejected 2001: A Space Odyssey score here.

Hello Vivien,
it's a nice request but as I just had written to Jude, I unfortunately don't have this Kenyon Hopkins score in my collection, but maybe the day (of an expanded release) will come and I can get to it. :-)
Best to you!
Fred
