    I was stationed aboard USS NIMITZ during the filming of this movie. I got to meet Kirk Douglas and all of the other actors; I was knocked down (but not hurt) by Martin Sheen when he was jogging inside the ship (a bad idea); I even had a bit part playing the RF-8G pilot looking down on Pearl Harbor and seeing all of the battleships lined up along Ford Island. Watching the dogfight scenes (F-14s versus the Zeros) still brings tears to my eyes.

      My favorite scene is during the 'Splash the Zeros' dogfight when the Toms are playing with the Zeros... The one Tom just seems to hang in the air then pushes nose over like it's dropping off the edge of a cliff...

    Saw this film in the theaters on my 12th Birthday. I joined the Navy 5 years later and was assigned to VA 35 (A6 Intruders), aboard the Nimitz. Loved serving aboard such an iconic ship. When I hear this music I swell with pride.

      I'd have loved to hear it! I remember how well good soundtracks sounded back in the late 90s. Music was so well written back then and to hear such orchestral pieces in full dolby 5.1 was an inmersive experience I haven't felt with modern cinema anymore.

      When the Intrepid Air and Space Museum first opened they had a Navy flight ops film made from all the extra footage using this music, constantly playing on the hanger deck.

    This movie is one of those diamonds in the rough that so often gets overlooked, and only known about if you had prior knowledge of it. For what it is, it's one one of my personal favorite films, and still stands the test of time. If they were to do a remake of this film, it would only disgrace the original. You can't repeat a unique film like this.

      This movie has been in the box office sellout for quite sometime in 1980 worldwide.The storm in the movie acted just 'right' for the Japanese lost all their aircraft carriers at Midway !

    • @mushdogful
      @mushdogful 3 роки тому

      I liked it but was terribly disappointed with the ending, because the moral question of whether they should interfere with history was never resolved. The storm came by in the nick of time and saved them from having to make a decision. That seemed such a cheat to me!

    • @Alaninbroomfield
      @Alaninbroomfield 3 роки тому

      Honestly, it was a campy movie, but, the thoughts it invoked were pretty powerful. The part where the capture Japanese pilot was told of all of Japan's secret plans, ships, times, codewords, etc, and he was stunned, momentarily in shock really. Heck wouldn't any of us be?

    • @jsmith5710
      @jsmith5710 3 роки тому

      Mushdogful- I respectfully disagree with you on the moral question: Kirk Douglas's character made the decision to have the Nimitz launch a strike, regardless of the consequences on the 'space-time continuum.' He deemed it the duty of the Nimitz, as a US man o' war to defend the nation.

    "The Final Countdown" has, when you think about it a pretty 'curious' story line, but it sells it well and makes it an exciting adventure, with help of the great Kirk Douglas and Martin Sheen and under direction of Don Taylor.
    John Scott provides a magnificent score with a very catchy main theme.
    Enjoy!

    "Gentlemen, this debrief comes under the National Security Act in various sections. This debrief will be secured under code-word level security and has the usual threats of penalties of monetary fines and jail times. Not to mention losing your military pensions and benefits.
    Are there any questions at this time in regards of this classified event? No? Very well. The loss of life is regrettable and will be filed as accidental incidents while underway, and the bodies were buried at sea, or marked as missing. The loss of the CAG will be filed, as lost at sea. Being single makes it convenient for all parties.
    The carrier itself will stay alongside dock while it is inspected by specialists and technicians of all sorts. All crew members are to be released from their duties save for the nuclear watch, until our own nuclear watch teams come on board."
    "Are there any questions or comments at this time? If so, they will be screened and the responses be filed as classified. A pity if you wanted to court-martial the command staff for getting the NIMITZ, "lost"."
    "I therefore declare this debrief as closed. Have a nice day everyone."

    I think the reason this movie is underrated is because people don't understand the story. they think going back or forth in time seems a bit unreal. The idea is fantastic that this carrier or anything anybody can move the timeline as they wish. Of course there is some limitation of doing that but no matter how we slice it it's spine chilling and exciting and much much more than our Earth related so called problems

    Movies about the Navy such as Midway, In Harms Way, the Final Countdown are underrated and that damned Patton was way far too overrated. As a Navy Veteran that has a nephew that is a Chief in the Naval Reserves and a future nephew in law that is a Naval Academy Graduate that will make Lieutenant within the next year, and a newphew that is a Major in the Marine Corps Reserves it would be great if movies about the Navy in World War II as well as the Marine Corps be given the top spot light for a change.

      Christopher S. O' my whole family are Navy vets. Dad, both grandfathers, uncle, and great uncles. My Gramps was even wounded in Korea. I agree. Navy is the coolest branch because they literally do everything.

    • @josephglatz25
      @josephglatz25 6 років тому +1

      Midway had action elements that were largely copied from other films, most notably Tora! Tora! Tora!, a vastly superior film with far more effort put into it from a production design perspective. Midway was rather lazy. We remember Patton because of its excellent production design and iconic performances. Yeah, the navy deserves better movies than it gets, I'll agree with you on that, but Midway would not be my choice of poster child. What sells a war movie is typically good production design, and I'll say that In Harm's Way had excellent production design for when it was made, and I for one would love to see a movie about for example, the battle of Leyte Gulf done with a reliance on solid practical effects, but for whatever reason, the last stand of the Tin Can Sailors just doesn't gain enough backing in Hollywood.

    • @christophers.o622
      @christophers.o622 6 років тому

      Joseph Glatz, I just read your comment. A very good comment. My Uncle-The late William C. O’Rourke was a Gunnermate station on board the USS Southerland DD-743 which he was a plank owner, he was in the Battle for Leyte Gulf. It would be great if they ever do a movie about that and give it top billing, also include the Naval Amphibious Force that lands the troops & equipment ashore. The Navy’s supply and repair class of ships are the true & real battle Navy, without the supply & repair ships the rest of the fleet can’t do their jobs and their functions. The saying All for One and One for All, the Navy best fits that describition.

    I think the F-14 Tomcat is the most beautifully shot movie.
    In general, the F-14 Tomcat is a TOP GUN and a popular movie, but I don't like it because it doesn't show the beauty of the aircraft.

    Great movie, great soundtrack. Much of the soundtrack seems like it would be extensible to remixes and the like. Is anyone aware of such works? Every time I search on "Final Countdown" and and variation of "Mix", I end up with the Europe song.

    Can one just imagine that the USS Nimitz had enough fire power to completely destroy the entire Japanese air attack and sunk the entire Japanese fleet! What would the world look like had that occurred? Interesting thought !

    I don’t know if I’m the only one but I remember seeing a few trailers for this on tv and two of them showed the -Cats and A-7’s actually attacking the Zeros, Kates, and Vals over Pearl. Either, I’m dreaming or that was a floor cutting moment...

    Straordinaria e stratosferica colonna sonora per un film altamente spettacolare del 1980 con attori famosi ( a proposito auguri KIRK per i tuoi 103 anni ). Trama unica nel suo genere, la corazzata NIMITZ con le sue armi atomiche proiettata al 6 dicembre 1941. E quel povero giapponese che rimane incredulo perchè sapevano il codice d'attacco segreto "Salite sul monte Fujihama".
