Fabulous job putting this soundtrack together! I've read the book. Saw the movie just after its release on the big screen. I've owned the VHS tape, later the DVD, and more recently the Blu-Ray. In short, I've watched the movie at least a dozen times over the years. Grew up a Navy junior. Served briefly as a Navy hospital corpsman, 1970-1971. I've been seriously researching U.S. entry into WWII and the background to Pearl Harbor since October 1983. I love the Navy with a passion. The above having been said, without a doubt, THE CAINE MUTINY is my favorite Navy movie of all-time. What I like best about the movie is the way Lieutenant junior grade Keith's "new" skipper walks down the pier at the end of the movie (Max Steiner's scoring is perfect here!), quickly followed by Keith's new ship steaming full speed ahead towards the Golden Gate Bridge while heading back into war in the Pacific. I highly recommend this film to everyone who loves the Navy and to all of us who enjoy a fine romantic movie at the same time. Go Navy! I to love the US Navy with a passion although I never served but 2 uncles did in the Big War and my recently deceased brother 1975-1981 and he wished that he had stayed in and been a lifer.
Thank you for your family's service. It's my opinion that even when only a father or mother is directly serving in any of our armed forces, the entire family is serving. (My dad was in the Navy during WWII prior to my birth. A few years after the war ended, and after my birth in 1948, my dad went back into the Navy. All five of us in my family loved the Navy. Ultimately, my mother wanted my dad to leave the Navy so he could spend more time at home with his wife and their three kids. Thank you very much for your love for our United States Navy! We've got a lot in common. I saw this on the wide screen, too, with my father who was a young naval officer. I was in the army 1966-73. We were a great generation! God bless.

This is one of my most favorite classic movies. I must have watched it nearly 50 times so far. My father and uncles served in the U.S. Navy during WWII and the Korean War aboard CVs, CVEs, CAs, APs, AKSs, etc. My father served as a quartermaster/signalman, so whenever flashing lights, semaphore flags, and flag halyards were shown in films such as "The Caine Mutiny" and "PT 109," Dad would interpret them for me. The at sea replenishment scene in "The Pursuit of the Graf Spee" also delighted him because he served some of his days aboard an attack cargo auxiliary vessel supplying CVs, BBs, CAs, CLs, and DDs via the "high line" method.
BTW, CV = fleet carrier, CVE = escort carrier, BB = battleship, CA = heavy cruiser, CL = light cruiser, DD = destroyer, AP = attack transport, AKS = attack cargo, etc.
You must be very proud to be related to our gallant warriors of The Greatest Generation who manned the Greatest Naval Fleet in the World history; the United States Navy Fast Carrier Task Forces in WW2. 🇺🇸🇺🇸

Oh my, this is splendid... and thanks so much for this unique compilation of this wonderful score. If you've ever served in a ship at sea, why The Caine Mutiny March just gets the hair on the back of your neck to stand at attention... at once evocative, majestic and nostalgic of standing out to a sea in your ship. There's nothing quite like it... and few movie marches match this one.

Two ships used in this film for "USS Caine" and one was USS Doyle DD 494, DMS 34 stationed at Long Beach,CA. The other was USS Thompson DD 627/ DMS 38 stationed at Pearl Harbor. H.T. Ending scene ship is the USS Richard B. Anderson DD 786 that was the Naval Reserve Training ship for Twelfth Naval District. This ship was also used in "Blood Alley" as a Chinese Gunboat. Great soundtrack.

The story and movie based on Herman Wouk’s Pulitzer Prize winning novel “The Caine Mutiny” is not your typical jovial US Navy one but captivates with a thrilling plot about a captain, portrayed by Humphrey Bogart, who gets mutinied by the ship’s crew, including José Ferrer, Van Johnson and others. Was it just because the captain being too challenging and harsh? Or is there more to discover? A court-martial is off to find out…
This movie marks the last appearance of the names of actor Bogart and composer Max Steiner together on the big screen, who both are indispensable when thinking of movies like “Casablanca” or “Treasure Of The Sierra Madre”. This time Steiner is, against most (or all?) recordings known of him, not conducting himself. This part was given to Morris Stoloff, for unknown reasons. A look into the musicians roster of the orchestra reveals Johnny F. Williams in the percussion section, father of John Williams. What makes this soundtrack also special in a way, is the fact that in the year of the film’s release plans existed to put out an album to feature (funny enough) almost no music but dialogue and effects tracks of the movie. The project happened to be cancelled but some copies managed to come into circulation and collectors are willed to pay about 10,000$ for it in some cases, which makes it the most valuable soundtrack album ever. Luckily Intrada Records was gracious enough to release the original recording back in 2017, which we are enjoying now with full speed ahead!
Fred would you believe I met Wouk and his wife many years ago. I have some photos somewhere in my home. He wrote a play Don't Stop The Carnival. It was presented at the Theatre I worked at. It starred Jimmy Buffet👍

I only have to hear the first few notes of this "march" and I know that I'm in for a great time to enjoy a wonderful movie. I could see the "Caine Mutiny" a dozen times in a row and still enjoy it. Wonderful performances all around. My Uncle Joe had a copy of the book by Herman Wouk and now it's sitting on my shelf awaiting being read soon. I'm sure I'm in for a good story. I always wanted to know who Fred MacMurray was referring to when he described in an off-hand way who "Caine" was as an "outcast."
Cain...who killed his brother Abel in the book of Genesis, and then was outcast from the rest of humanity. Lt. Kieffer (Mac Murray) was just being a smart ass. The Caine wasn't named after the "first murderer" of course, the names weren't even spelled the same.
@@Russell_Huston My Uncle had the book in his library and when he passed, I put it in mine. It's on my list to read the book and find any passage referring to who "Caine" was. I always assumed there was an actual "Caine" and not "Cain," but then again you might be right. As for the story of Genesis, I've studied it well.

"The story and movie based on Herman Wouk’s Pulitzer Prize winning novel “The Caine Mutiny” is not your typical jovial US Navy one" - this is exactly correct, which makes it ironic that the soundtrack has such a typical jovial US Navy feel to it. Nevertheless, it fits nicely with the picture! This is probably because The Caine Mutiny is such a complex film; even with its serious story, it has several moments that can't fail to bring a smile to your face. Complex, but easy to follow, with great acting and a great soundtrack - but we would expect no less from Max Steiner, one of the finest composers of the 20th Century.
I believe Max Steiner also composed at least two other U.S. Navy related sound track marches in other motion pictures: (1) "Operation Pacific" ua-cam.com/video/Hv1ElzBNEqw/v-deo.html and (2) "Dive Bomber" ua-cam.com/video/ntmhwpWn26g/v-deo.html. Also, a few snippets of his music were incorporated into the film "PT 109"...notably the music phrase leading up to the typhoon in the "Caine Mutiny" can be heard as JFK's LST appears at the beginning of the film as it approaches the destination of Tulagi in the Solomon Islands. In addition, Steiner's "Caine Mutiny March" serves as the music for both the opening and closing credits in the film "Hellcats of the Navy" ua-cam.com/video/3_AWPaQNMuo/v-deo.html

Never got an Oscar, what a shame.
It was up against stiff competition in 1954. “On The Waterfront” took home the Oscar for best picture.
I recall seeing Stoloff's name on many Decca 78s, so I am guessing that this is from the original soundtrack recorded in late 1953 or early 1954. The sound quality is excellent, and avoids some of the peakiness of some of the tape-mastered recordings from the early 1950s, including one from Decca, the Broadway revival of "On Your Toes." I wonder if a new or used copy of this can be found.
"Love in the Valley" from 07:30 is pretty amazing.
