Very helpful video! I’m the home owner struggling with Symmons. Debating if I should buy a new shower system instead of going thru so many videos to find the replacement for symmons.
@odmcarp If the piston is moving OK, then the problem may be elsewhere. Is the shower on the second floor? You need more water pressure to force water to the second floor. What is the water pressure in your house? If you are on a well, you may have to adjust the pump pressure up from the wstandard 30-50 psi to 40-60. If it is not that, maybe your plumbing lines are too small or some of your lines (or valves controling those lines) are partially plugged. Tom
@wheeldawg1 Lowes and maybe Home Depot have that cartridge for about $35.00 or so. There is no reason you can't replace it as long as you srew the cap down completely on the cartridge before turning the cartidge into the body of the valve. If you take out the old cartridge and it rattles like the video shows, then there is no reason to replace it. The problem is elsewhere. But it sounds like it must be the cartridge. Tom
Super durable easily maintained dependable valve. I find this video biased. We use this in our apartments and have found them to be easy to repair, durable and haven't found them to be a "plumber" valve at all. All the part s are readily available, no laughing matter and almost anyone can work on them because of the simple design. Since symmons went t the plastic handle, what used to be cast metal , the problems of the stuck handle are near non existent..
@tomolds I'm fiddling with mine now and I have the same issue. Trickle of hot. Cartridge was stuck but we took it out, soaked in vinegar and tapped it a few times, and it now rattles fine. There is more hot water, but definitely not enough right now.
Good video, but I could not disagree with your more. I understand this is an older video, but as a homeowner I work on the Symmons valves all the time. The plastic handle shown replaces an older cast metal handle that would corrode onto the stem. The newer plastic WILL NOT corrode. Parts are easily available, and may be covered under the homeowners warranty. Replacing the hot and cold washers is easy and cost effective, watch other videos to see how. Replacing the valve seats can be difficult and may require either special tools, or a plumber who has the tools. Overall, I do not see the Symmons line as a plumber's line of valves.
Those are stops so you can turn off the hot and cold water and work on the valve without going down cellar (or somewhere else) and shutting off the water.
If the rest of the house has plenty of hot water, then it is probably a stuck piston in the cartridge in the Symmons valve. You may have to shut off the whole house to fix it.
mine handled water just fine, but somebody had put a universal handle on the end, and the steel chewed up the brass splines and i couldnt tighten anything to turn it off anymore. thanks for the tutorial
If you're sure there is a screw under that cap, then you have to get the cap off even if you mess up the cap. Usually a sharp knife can be used to pry off the cap, but some caps are threaded and can't be pried off, they have to be unscrewed with pliers (and a cloth to prevent damageing the finish). I am not familiar with Aqua Brass. Sorry.
Thanks for the video and explanation. Any reason why a homeowner shouldn't just try replacing the cartridge (TA-10?) themself if experiencing problems? It doesn't seem like a bad job if you can get the part. I've got a seldom-used shower in a house we just bought that has plenty of cold water flow but just a trickle of hot. Hot water supply seems okay otherwise.
Thank you so much for this informative video. I am looking to replace my shower/tub faucet and just found out that if i want to go with another brand I have to have the valve replace. Which means cutting into dry wall,, at lease its in a closet. I am looking to upgrade to a sigma what are your thoughts on that brand. I despise the symmons ones like you said it all plastic. Thank you for your imput.
If the faucet drips, then replace the screws and washers. But I've had more problems with the cartridge over the years. That is not a $3.00 fix, more like a $30.00 fix. I don't know if LOWES sells that part or not.
I bought a house with this type of shower fixture and can only get cold water in the shower. There are no valves in line on the hot water side for it to be shutoff. Is there an adjustment of some type?
Hi tom I have two off these in my (Model C) house but one knocks the line real hard when we close can i repair that by getting a new stem ty very much fr your time
I have Aqua Brass shower control which is leaking. I can not remove its ball shaped brass handle to remove the cartridge to replace with a new one. The handle has a round handle cover that hides the retaining screw. I can not remove the cover to complete the cartridge replacement. Can you help?
Hey Tom. I have a Symmons like the one in the video. A best, I get luke warm water from my shower. I replaced the cartridge to no avail. It doesn't drip, but is it possible that the seats are shot too? I get a lot of poppy seed size grains of sand from my private well that I sometimes hear crunching when I turn the valve. I thought perhaps this could have damaged the seats, and cold water is flooding to the cartridge. My hot water supply into the valve body is around 125 degrees after being tempered by a Watts 70A anti-scald valve at the boiler. This is a brand new valve and I can't get it any hotter than that. Thanks!
Hi Tom: Thanks for the video. I have a Symmons spindle, but it has a longer splined shaft. It has 0697 stamped on it. Any idea whether TA-10 will work for it?
my wife went to use the use the shower and the water comes out very hot as soon as you crack the valve open...it's almost as if there is no cold water.it's a symmons valve.....do you have any tips on what it could be?
Hi Tom, I recently replaced my TA-10 cartridge as the threaded stem broke at the handle. Just noticed that I now have a drip leak from the Diverter handle, my faucet is an Aquabrass, about 15 years old. Is there an easy fix for this?
No need to make a simple valve difficult to repair and call a plumber just to be charged for a very basic repair. Unless in your area you have "affordable plumbers" go to Home Depot they carry all the necessary pars, watch UA-cam and you would be able to replace whatever is there..Really no big deal
Thank You Tom. Your information was exactly what I needed to fix my faulty shower valve control piston. Works great now. Thanks.

I could never imagine calling a plumber to replace that valve... Its probably the easiest thing to do....
That valve has been around for years and there is a reason for it. All brass and well made . I have known idea why you wouldn't recommend it
@odmcarp

My handle is so corroded a handle puller doesn’t work. I’m going to have to saw it off. So this video is super helpful.

Got it. That is what I thought. Thank you for taking the time to reply.

I'll pull it apart and see if it rattles. Thanks again!
Sigma is a good valve. It is assembled in California with parts made in China and Germany.

Tom I have this exact issue, how did you fix it?
@@talyamoked3454 I read that these valves need 140 degree min water supply to the hot.

How did you remove the cartridge from the valve assembly? I removed to packing but but the cartridge won't budge?
Does anyone know what the Symmons part C-32-11 does? It is on the Visu-Temp valve assembly. There are two of them. What is its function?
Call symmons

I have this valve in my shower and the hot water comes on first before the cold is there a fix for this?
Pipes are crossed
You would need a T-109 reverse seat call your local distributor for parts
Do these crossover?
@cmacclel
Symmons customer service number is 1-800-796-6667 Most of the time they will send free parts (like most manufacturers) to home owners.
Tom
Glad the video helped
