9:35 - 14:18 This guitar solo "hurricane" is not just Mark Knopfler or the Dire Straits,
but also one of the greatest 5 minutes of universal rock history. Total audio orgasm.

This song is based on an actual road in SE Michigan. It runs through Pontiac, MI former home of the SIlverdome (and home of the Detroit Lions) and it inspired Mark Knofler to pen this song after Dire Straits played there. Today Telegraph Road runs from Pontiac MI, South through Detroit and to the Ohio border. It is called US24 and continues under various names to Eastern Colorado and the foothills of the Rockies.

I was 17/18 years of age in 1982 when I bought this record. My best schoolfriend also did. I went "nuts" hearing this song. It is beyond everything I had heard and it made a deep impact. It still does. This is a song that "can not be made" and .... Mark Knopfler did😎. I think it is still pretty unbelieveble!

The finest piece of rock music in my opinion. In this song, there is Dylan, Springsteen...and Knopfler. Always gives shivers and tears. Telegraph Road got so deep and so wide

I count myself as so lucky to have seen Dire Straits live in the 80s, not once but twice. I revelled in the moment, but even though I enjoyed them, I just didn't realise exactly how lucky, and privileged I was to enjoy those live concerts. If I could go back, I'd drink up every moment, and treasure them all the more. Pure magic. Bliss music. Such talent.

This is great, except the Telegraph Road in the song is not out in the American West that this photo depicts. The Telegraph Road of MK is in suburban Detroit, Michigan, USA. Trust me, I live near it and I read the 1982 interview with Mark when he said he was on a tour bus leaving a Detroit concert in 1979 when they were stuck in traffic on Telegraph Road and he started thinking about where these roads came from, especially in America, where everything is less than 300 years old.
I should know. My family immigrated to the USA from England in 1837 and settled in West Michigan -- just like the man in this song who "put down his load where he thought it was the best." The "cold lake shore" refers to the Great Lakes. Listen to the lyrics and it tells the story of Detroit, including its growth from tiny trading post, to become the Motor City, to WWII when it was known as the "arsenal of democracy," and on to its decline after the race riots of the 1960s.
It's not unlike the story of Mark's hometown of Newcastle, which declined after the shipbuilding trade left the UK. Anyway, it's an awesome song, and it's humbling to think that Mark wrote it about my home state here in the middle of America. :)

    • @janetwhite7786
      @janetwhite7786 5 років тому +14

I've always thought that! So obviously the great lakes. Nevr been there, but Mark K makes it so easy to see. And it's so sad, "then came the lawyers, then came the rules". This really has it all...marvelous musicianship (turn this UP LOUD) and wonderful word-pictures. And love going cold. What else is there?

I read a Dire Straits biography that was printed years ago, and Knopfler talked about writing this song. He said he was on the tour bus, and outside of Detroit, Michigan there's an actual 'Telegraph Road.' It's a very long, busy stretch of highway that seems to go on forever. He said when they were driving on it, he imagined what it must have been like when that area was settled, and who the first people were who came down the path that eventually turned into the road of the song's namesake.

A long time ago came a man on a track
Walking thirty miles with a sack on his back
And he put down his load where he thought it was the best
Made a home in the wilderness
He built a cabin and a winter store
And he ploughed up the ground by the cold lake shore
And the other travellers came walking down the track
And they never went further, no, they never went back
Then came the churches, then came the schools
Then came the lawyers, then came the rules
Then came the trains and the trucks with their load
And the dirty old track was the Telegraph Road
Then came the mines, then came the ore
Then there was the hard times, then there was a war
Telegraph sang a song about the world outside
Telegraph Road got so deep and so wide
    Like a rolling river
And my radio says tonight it's gonna freeze
People driving home from the factories
    There's six lanes of traffic
    Three lanes moving slow
I used to like to go to work but they shut it down
I've got a right to go to work but there's no work here to be found
Yes, and they say we're gonna have to pay what's owed
We're gonna have to reap from some seed that's been sowed
And the birds up on the wires and the telegraph poles
They can always fly away from this rain and this cold
You can hear them singing out their telegraph code
All the way down the Telegraph Road
Well, I'd sooner forget, but I remember those nights
Yeah, life was just a bet on a race between the lights
You had your hand on my shoulder, you had your hand in my hair
Now you act a little colder like you don't seem to care
But just believe in me baby and I'll take you away
From out of this darkness and into the day
From these rivers of headlights, these rivers of rain
From the anger that lives on the streets with these names
'Cause I've run every red light on memory lane
I've seen desperation explode into flames
And I don't wanna see it again
From all of these signs saying "sorry but we're closed"
All the way down the Telegraph Road

Yeah, this for me was this Island’s version of Springsteen’s, “Born to run,” It gets up, walks, jogs, runs and then gets on a Hayabusa and pins it in every gear. Profound cultural significance in those lyrics. Economic decline, the rise of the Tory’s. The need for a common dream and that we all come from dust and we all go to it but we need some freedom and meaning to get us through.

Winter. Stuck in the doom of a small town in the midwest. Alone. Family in the next room might as well have been in Florida they were so far away from me. Public library had records. Only cool thing about that entire town. Found this one. Borrowed my sisters record player, and played it. And played it. And played it. Again and again. And with it, I walked away from that life of gloom and doom. Said farewell without a word. Traded snow for sand. Sleet for sunshine. Walked half way around the world before I felt it was safe to turn around look back. Didn't look long. The scars too deep, still festering. Looked just long enough to make sure the walk was worth it. It was. Live in Borneo. Have a beach. Have a brilliant kid. Beautiful lady. Epic adventure life. Thank you Mark Knopfler, thank you so much for the passion on the record. I live my life now by dancing with the words across the page. Thank you for showing me it was possible. - AB in Sabah Borneo and Santa Barbara, California
