I’m mostly on Team “just make sure you give the bottle a good cleaning every now and then”. I didn’t do that when I had my old bottle and got sick a few times while traveling. Not fun.

My absolute favorite water bottle is the Owala FreeSip bottle. It’s an insulated stainless steel bottle that has a cap similar to the Avana Ashbury. You can either sip thru its built in straw or swig water with its wide mouth opening in the same cap. Unlike the Avana Ashbury, its cap has the added benefit of a spring loaded flip top and a loop that doubles as the cap lock to prevent unintentional opening of the bottle.
Great vid, only thing I wish had been covered was washing - are they dishwasher safe, any issues with cleaning in general (the memo bottle is great in concept but would it be easy to clean?)

You can use vinegar, bicarbonate of soda and hot water to clean.
I was tempted by a collapsible bottle but I won't like washing them.
I am wondering how people maintain a clean bottle on longer trips. I know that I wash mine weekly at home.
I love my CamelBak Chute Mag bottle. Keeps my water cold for a very long time and the cap opens at an angle so it doesn't hit your nose and has a magnet to keep it secure while drinking.

Vapur is great for hiking on a VERY hot day, cus you could actually just freeze it, works like an ice pack and it slowly melts and you got cold water.

Great video! Another consideration for me is how narrow the neck is. I don't always have access to a dishwasher, and narrow bottles also need a special brush or something to get inside for cleaning. Additionally, they can be hard to get ice cubes inside, or things to flavor your drink like a tea bag or slice of lemon. My favorite is the S'well traveler - Insulated steel with a wide opening. I also find that painted colors get chipped and start to look banged up way sooner, so I opt for the plain brushed stainless steal colorway. :)

Same here! It's been years since I've been looking for an easy to clean bottle, which implies having at least a 3.5in mouth. A large travel cup would be OK as well. I took a look at Swell Traveler but it doesn't seem easy to clean.
I really like Klean Kanteen as a brand and their style of bottles are really nice. That pop up straw thing looks cool. I might have to get one of those. I have their older 20 oz insulated one which has been really nice on hot summer days. I gotta have ice cold water always even in winter. Now, if they'd only make something that would make it sound proof, the ice moving around isn't exactly stealth when walking around 😆
there are some really cheap options that perform very well - ozark trail, zak, simple modern. i do think the takeya cap design is extremely superior thought and is worth mentioning for a traveler - the handle is comfortable and can also be attached to a carabiner
Yep .. Budget does nor necessarily make it inferior to the higher-price 'brand' items.
I was visiting some family in texas and the airbnb we were staying at had surprisingly little glassware and plates. when we went to a walmart to buy some groceries I saw the ozark trail insulated tumblers were like $8, I thought I'd give it a whirl... IT WORKS GREAT! I have multiple yetis at home, but this ozark trail works really well. at 1/3 the price.
I have a Klean Kanteen TKWIDE in a 500ml and 1L (32OZ) size and absolutely love them over the other bottles I've had because of the ability to clean and the lids are interchangable.
I drink ALOT of Tea and any of the smaller openings are just so bad for cleaning.

Great, informative video. But I was surprised you didn’t include Camelback (specifically my fav the Chute Mag model) or Nalgene.
Chute Mag is easily #1 imo, definitely should have included it. Easy to fill, easy to clean, and works great for water/coffee/tea/etc
I love my Stainless steal Britta bottle with charcoal filter.
I like Nalgene but the plastic sweats and I liked the wide mouth but didn't like having to buy different lids

I love the vapur bottles! So easy to carry! I’ve traveled all over the world with them. In hot climates if I have access to a freezer I fill it halfway at night and freeze. In the morning I fill it up and it stays cold- or at least drinkable-until emptied. I also have sleeves for them which may not keep them that cold but at least keeps them from sweating all over my pack.
Do you have to drink out of it like a psychopath like the model in this video did? Lol
Had my doubts about a twelve minute video about water bottles, but it was quite informative. Of course, I'm a gear junky and water bottle "collector" so I was inclined to watch it. The timestamp info for each bottle was very helpful.

I would highly encourage anyone watching this to consider the relatively new Hydro flask Trail series! It's MUCH lighter than the main series, but in my personal testing and those I've seen around the web, it's insulating properties are as good or possibly even better than the standard models. I use the 24oz model, they made it longer and slimmer so it fits inside my sling and other bags much better than a shorter wider bottle would, and it fits inside my cup holder in my car. You kind of have to hold it to feel just what a difference the weight savings makes, but it really makes it easy to justify always having an insulated bottle around vs settling for a regular stainless or plastic bottle!
It will naturally be slightly less durable, but I've used other lighter class insulated double wall bottles like the GCI microlite. THOSE bottles I feel like I could squeeze a dent in them in my hand, this is more robust than that.

For those who are interested in the collapsible bottles, I also suggest the Hydrapak Flux 1L/1.5L and Hydrapak Stow 1L
Do they keep it nice and cold without a plasticy taste ?
I'm a Takeya gal (wish it came in a 20 ounce). I like that you just unscrew the cap, pull it back and it stays in place. It has a foldover handle so it's easier to fit in tight spaces. Best of all it's leakproof - my #1 concern. Did you test for that? So many of my backpacks don't have outside water bottle pockets (annoying). Also not a fan of bottles which require holding the top in one hand. P.S. I'm team cold water, hot coffee (that stays hot longer than three hours) and leeeaaakkkkproof.
I like the new set up! But may I suggest putting up some sound foam on the wall behind the camera, and maybe even a rug on the floor? You sound pretty boomy

I think you overlooked the camelbak chute insulated bottle. Small cap which folds over and secured magnetically for easy sipping, but big enough to take large gulps. But the whole head assembly comes off for super easy cleaning, fast emptying or filling. Plus the insulation works incredibly well for cold drinks. I’ve often put ice in there with drinks, and the next day there’s still ice in there if the lid’s been kept on. Highly recommended.

Interesting new setup! I'm in both camps. Team cold for city/urban travel and team room temp for outdoors stuff because you don't have to deal with condensation.
I watched your video on water bottles, and yes I am a cold water snob, but I settled for the Platypus water bottle. I used it in Germany, Russia, France, Italy and Canada, and I highly recommend it. It takes so little space and is easy to fill and clean. It does not keep water cold for long, but the trade off is well worth it. I highly recommend the the Platypus. Off to Greece in a few months.

I've got the A7 I have been rocking it for the last couple of days and I love it! One of my faves I didn't find the bottle sleeve hard to get off. I have been rocking the Hydraflask for over 2 years they are like $40 - $89 AUD solution out here in Australia but I had to cop the orange and the sleeve came with mine. I am surprised that the Que Bottle didn't make the cut!

I have several different water bottles. I have two star bucks ones, a teal Klean Canteen, a S'well, a Takeya, a Hydro Flask, a Yeti, a life factory, and a camelbak chute. I have had the Klean Canteen, the S'well and the Life Factory for about two years now.
I would recommend the Katadyn Be Free water filter. Packs away to nothing and can be used as either your primary or secondary water bottle.

I own the same klean kanteen bottle in this video and I loved it until recently. I forgot to take it out of my car for about a day and had left tea in it. The tea did its fermenting thing and unfortunately created a lot of pressure in the bottle that it ruined the straw cap. Now it leaks where it didn't before. I have yet to get a replacement cap, but I think I'll get a different style. This is not to say the bottle is bad, but just be aware that you need to be careful with it.
I love my 32oz Hydroflask as a everyday water bottle. I prefer my water cold so it’s my favorite. Oh and I love a good straw lid 😁

I have a Grayl and a Zojirushi (a different style) and I love them. I like to keep a scarf tied to the grayl for when I’m carrying it around and get cold. I keep the 10oz Zojirushi around for small bags and general use for keeping water ice cold or boiling hot for hours. =)
Memobottle & Kleen Kanteen are the only B Corp certified companys, which is important if you care
about the environment, workers & company practices & not just the actual bottles.
The water bottle I use every day is the 40oz Ranger from Manna. It's insulated and keeps my water nice and chilly all day. The powdercoat (matte finish) versions also survive the dishwasher quite well. I've got one in both turquoise and light purple. The turquoise one I've had for several years and it's quite beat up, but it still works just as well as it did when new. They're really too big for travel though. So I use an insulated 27 oz bottle (also from Manna, forgot which line) that's relatively slim for that. Both styles are easy to keep clean.

I just hit year 3 of traveling with a Hydroflask 40oz, that replaced a 32oz many years old Nalgene that I forgot to drain having to go back through security after clearing customs. I drink a lot of water so willing to sacrifice the compact size for more capacity.

Wide open for easy refill / ice, narrow mouth for easy drink and you don't have the hand busy with the cork thanks to the magnetized system!

24oz hydro flask lightweight trail bottle here. Bottlepro splash pro for easily drinking through the wide mouth without buying a heavier lid that has harder to clean nooks and crannies
I have the Chillys series 2 and I hate it. The rubber collar between the cap and the bottle constantly comes loose when undoing it no matter how hard I turn it. I wish it was permanently attached.

I have a CamelBak Eddy straw bottle which I prefer to any of these it’s stainless steel double wall insulated and keeps my water perfectly cold has a great handle and fits perfectly in my backpack water bottle pocket and is very easy to use and keep clean too
I have this red plastic Marvel branded bottle. It was one of those random promo situations where you got it super cheap if you collected enough grocery store stickers haha. It has a dual lid - one about an inch across, then if you open the second one it's as wide as the entire bottle, so you can get ice into it and lemon slices and whatnot. Best bottle ever!

So just to add, the Grayl, not only filters parasites and bacteria but very importantly viruses, which is why you can use it for travelling to geos without clean water. (I just ordered the 24oz last week). And, while you are looking at Hydroflask, they have a new lighter weight version in 24 and 32 oz. They are epic, feel much lighter, with awesome finishes. With all our cupboard full of Hydroflasks we use the Takeya, sipping lid, much like the Camelback Shute. It fits well on all the current Hyroflasks, for those of us who don't like a straw, nor pouring water across our face with the wide mouths. 8-)

I used to use the Klean Kanteen with a sports cap so I can drink on the go and a moving vehicle. But now I'm using Stanley insulated bottle adventure edition, with the action trigger which give the same purpose as the sports cap. But in edition, it has a plastic cover which gives me a piece of mind. The Zijuroshi looks like a good alternative for my needs but the size of Stanley allows me to keep my bottle sideways in my Dayfarer messenger bag. (One of the main reason I switched from Klean Kanteen).

I have a variety of leakproof thermoses (I make sure they keep 12/24/48 hrs hot/cold content) from bottle share to mug or small thermos for a flat white on the go.
I'm impressed with the fact that we humans finally go eco-friendly and recycling ♻️ reusable redesigning items.
Does the avana ashbury water bottle fit inside a kanken (classic) slim water bottle pocket? 🤔
Can you do a review of the Vargo titanium bottles. They have a few. I found their insulated bottles very good. Like hot or cold... maintaining temperatures up to 24 to 26 hours depending on how often you open or close the bottle.
Any suggestions for a slim water bottle? Material does not matter, neither does insulation. My backpack only allows for up to 5.5cm/~2.2in diameter without much hassle but height is not a problem. Any ideas? Minimum 500mL.

Means usually pack hacker prefers kinda clean design and not so much kind of kindergarten stuff. I was just wondering why they didn't include something like an ultralight pure titanium bottle coming with minimalistic design and multipurpose use for travel, office and forests ... ;-)

I’ve been switching between a Camelbak Shute with the screw top closure and the Hydroflask. Just depends on the activity and how long I’ll be away from a reliable source of water. I do keep a Vapur in my travel carryon as a way to avoid buying anything at the airport.

I like the Coleman Autoseal and takeya travel water bottle more than all these options. I have both a couple of yetis and hydroflasks. I think the Coleman autoseal bottle is the best one to have if I could only have one. Also it’s like $20 for the 40oz

I’m disappointed that my all time favorite isn’t on the list. I’ve been traveling with the Platypus collapsible water bottle for decades. Just add a carabiner clip and it’s ready for anything.
I’ve used these on caving and mountaineering trips, as well as multi month adventure travel.
The collapsible function sets it apart in my book.
The Didi water bottle has a built in light to turn it into a lantern and also has a humidifier.

My vote for Memobottle A6 based on usage.
Would be nice if you would rank them, or at least give us your top three or something..
50/50.....one third the price of hydro flask, they have a great straw system, many choices and work as well as hydro flask or the others in keeping drinks cold.

My son is wanting a chilly’s but not sure whether to get him the newer design or the old one (which I still love and I’ve had mine over a year and still going strong). Good question! Bottle brushes work well for hard to reach places. Some bottles on this list are dishwasher safe. Vinegar & water works, too. Castile soap like Dr. Bronner's is another great option since it's multi-use.

@@PackHacker plenty of colors to choose from, extra protection with their anti open locking snap closure and clip can also be used to hold the bottle when walking around the city, double insulated beverage is kept cold all day, wide open for easy clean, straw and chug option is super convenient when driving as well, light weight as well! But if users don’t like the stainless version there is a plastic version as well! I haven’t used any other bottle since I’ve gotten mine! And I’ve given them as gifts to many and all have chucked away their old bottles!
