The Making Of The Miracle Album Cover with Richard Gray 1989 (from GVH2 disc 2)
/ queenofficial
Today with photoshop this would be a snap to do or at least a lot easier then back then. It's fascinating how ground breaking this cover was at the time.
Even with Gimp!
You mean than

I spent a lot of time as a child looking at this wondering how it could be done. When I got photoshop it was one of the first things I did. Amazing how such skill and amazing techniques from the darkroom became so redundant so fast….
1:11 - I love that Richard Gray specifies how he put Brian on the end “because he had so much hair.”
And thus, the floof was preserved on the four headed creature. Thank goodness.
The Miracle sleeve cover depicts well this great band who has stayed united through all those years without a single musician change. Until the death of a member. The one that they absolutely could not afford to lose.
QUEEN was a miracle in Music History. Freddie is a Legend and Legends NEVER die
Very unique and original cover!! Like QUEEN!!!!
The machine was called the Paintbox made by Quantel a British company. That machine was a popular machine to be used for tv broadcasting graphics in the 80s.
Hue, am so proud knowing this from researching on the internet on my own even though I'm in my early twenties. I'm actually still in my research. After founding this machine also happened to be used by my favorite band I imediately searched and found on youtube.
I aint those people who got into Queen just because of the hype from their new movie. Heard Queen and loved it ever since I'm a kid. Had most of those music video cds of Queen.
Cool, dude!
ART!
Kind of Magic! Epic cover
No question!
Amazing for the time but it’s a strange cover. The blue sky in the background is strange too. It’s like the four headed monster is floating in the air. The wall of eyes is creepy too. A strange time for Queen as the touring days were now over unfortunately and the videos had Freddie looking frail and a shadow of his former self. The last two years from 1989 to 1991 was a waiting game in which fans were confused but knew things were not quite right. Very sad indeed but now we can appreciate his amazing musical legacy, I still do every day.
It's supposed to be strange and provocative! I have never thought of it like you and so many so in terms of it being scary though, lol. I guess I know it wasn't real, lol. Freakish, but I loved it not only for that but I feel like I wasn't scared by it though, lol, like it was always benevolent to me. Lol.
You remember the 1989/91 period ? After the magic tour in 86 did the fans start to look suspicious about Freddie health our just after 1989 ? And what people think in general back in the day ?
Your use of the word strange is very strange.
The days before Photoshop! Love it!!
Brilliant!! A couple of years before Photoshop, it must've been great technology back then. :)
Actually Photoshop came out only a year after. But didn't support layers so this would have been very hard to do.

The Best!!!
The audio delay in this video is worse than a Bruce Lee movie.
:pensive: 😔
Au premier regard tellement monstrueux à l'époque, une chimère, mais la finesse du rendu final faisait qu'ils étaient bien présents là les quatre en un, le message était réussi, et s'adresse à qui comprend vraiment ce groupe.
Great album. Great Cover!
In those days a computer with such editing capabilities cost a fortune. This was not just a PC, but most likely a small to medium mainframe machine with lots of parallel processors.
Even mainframes of that era didn't have that sort of graphics capability. Even Tron, circa 1983 needed a super computer to tediously create each frame.
cfm marko is correct. They used a super specialized computer called a Quantel Paintbox to do this. It cost a fortune but was pretty powerful. Also even without the paintbox at the time there were specializes companies using highly specialized computers doing this work. One of them was called Scitex, though I have no idea if they could do this kind of job.
It cost over $100k
yea. still makes me wonder how on earth they made the CGI intro for doctor who. that was in 1987. it must of been an area 51 pc or something.
I'm amazed
Woooow!!!!!!
Love videos like these. Thanks Queen! :)
Is it only for me, or the audio is quite off?
yeah, it’s off
I didn't notice it
why everyone sayin audio off its fine
Exactly
They fixed it, the last time I watched this video like back in 2018, the audio *was* off.
una caratula legendaria para mi
Wow
The sound is off
This was the world before tools like Photoshop became mainstream. Although there were other platforms around at the time what Photoshop really did was democratize the ability to edit images and brought the cost way down from what it would have cost to make.
Great cover, it should be as iconic as the Queen II cover (which was inspired by With The Beatles album cover, tbh).
Actually inspired by a 1930s picture of Marlene Dietrich, according to Mick Rock who did the photography for Queen II.
Sound is unsynched :(
+RICKROLLBLENDER Unfortunately.
Fix audio please
Wao :D
One can stare it this image for a long time and keep seeing different things appear. It is indeed a miracle. The unity among the 4 could not be better depicted. Brilliant.
this video exists
Not only does this upload take us back to the dawn of digital manipulation, it shows us how far back in time lip-synching goes!
Was the original version in German, then dubbed into English . . . badly?
nice shoes
Now it's a 10 minute job in Photoshop haha.
Queen on that cover looks like some mutant from the scp containment breach
Queen did everything right artistically....shame to see the damage Lambert has done.
why lambert specifically? lol
Ok, so basically photoshop then, just OLD photoshop.
It looks really bad tho
worst album cover ever
