- After sitting at the dockside for many months 70012 departs on mid summers day 2011. Seen here leaving Newport Docks for Liverpool Docks and return to sender along the M4. The loco is now used as a test bed at GE in Erie, Pennsylvania. The frames are straightened and extra railing and body platforms for safe access
For me, this is what spotting is all about, right tip off, right place and right time, and brilliant photos. I doubt if any of the media even knew about this, let alone cover the story.Historic, I wish I had been there to see it. Thanks for a great post.
instablaster...
What superb coverage of this event. Patently obvious that this engine had broken its back, not so obvious, of course, that internal bits had fallen through hence the write off . Thanks, a great study. Cannot imagine what would have happened if the grain cargo had not been in situ - total loss of ship and locomotive!
The actual Allelys DAF XF Hauling class 70 012 on the lo-loader in the Video actually took the trailer and Loco aboard the Ship and went with the Loco still loaded on its trailer & Semi to the USA to unload the Loco, It was unloaded at the Dock in Erie onto a track and the Allelys DAF & Trailer came back to the UK on the boat which turned around 24 hours later. The class 70 is now back with GE in Erie awaiting its fate.
Quite right Henry; the 100 ton + loco would have gone through the bottom of the boat. As it was dropped at an angle the initial impact would have been far greater than 100tons per square inch
Mike
thank you for the video of 70012 mike wilcock this class 70 is gone but not forgotten rip 70012 from james freeman in oxford & a happy Christmas to you mike wilcock and I have subed to your channel
Cheers, Mike. Nice footage :)
On its arrival at Liverpool docks is was loaded onto the sailing for the USA and returned to GE where it has been used for spares ( so I believe ) When it was dropped everything inside broke free and was badly damaged. If the boat at Newport didn't have a grain cargo underneath the deck it was dropped on, it could have gone through the ships bottom ! Mike
It's actually ge test train now here in the US. There is a video recently of it running with our locomotive.
Congratulations Mike, for getting this rare footage...what a catch eh!.....Bob
Very interesting vid...cheers Steve..
Great captures
That's why it travelled at night. Even though it was the shortest day last summer my video camera was able to cope with the approaching darkness at the docks. It was quite dark on the M4 as you can see
Mike with 70099 on video now !
After seeing a video of it operating on the Wabtec test track here in the US, I did a brief look-around to see if any UK railfans had noticed. So, for any one still curious, here is some footage that showed up recently: ua-cam.com/video/-QUvcSAvi1U/v-deo.htmlsi=Fqwysj0CsdvnNaqH
Great vid Mike
I has friends who tipped me off about her evening departure, quite light as it was mid-summers day!
It's all in the eye of the beholder. The're very efficient and reliable ( so I'm told )
What would your loco look like ??
THANKS FOR WATCHING.............Mike in Wales
Yes, she was dropped on-board the ship, cable snapped on the coldest day of the year. She departed Newport on the longest day of the year, that's why is fairly bright for the time of day....I was the only one there with a video....good to have local contacts.
Apparently the frames were straightened and is now used as a factory shunter in the US.
Thant's the 1st I heard of that; thanks
Sad story of the 70012, amazing to see how bent she was, important video for rail history.
I was the only one there when she left the docks, obviously I missed the drop!
Great video! I work at the plant in which she was built, and still resides.
I would appreciate a photo if at all possible. As I was one of the few who took images in Wales......email on...wilcock60@aol.com...............thanks
GR8 vid
Some years ago , I was picking up a load from Newport docks, l saw this loco on a trailer, I was sure it was bent. Then a few years on I read truck and driver , I got the full story, the strops broke and was dropped in the hold of the ship, then it had to be taken back to usa , norfolk Virginia, by ro ro ferry, for repair.
THANKS FOR YOUR INFO. So my information was correct, it was dropped on board. It left Newport on mid summers day in 2011. I was the only person there with my video; I had a tip off and followed it so far up the M4. Mike still out and about at 79 yrs.!
Shame 012 has been scrapped and didn't get repaired BTW great video
I bwlieve this is now in use as a yard shunter at the factory. I bet the bang was loud when it slammed into the quatside. I eemember seeing the ill faited gmGreat Heck 66 under a tarp at Hunslet TMD for a long time before it was finally cut up
Morning Martin; if you read through my comments you''ll note it was dropped inside the ship, not onto the quayside. Thanks for watching ( along with 53,000 others !)
They were fortunate that the deck below was full of some agricultural produce, which cushioned the fall
So I've been informed Mike in Wales...thanks for watching...2 x 73 next upload
great vid ,always wondered what happened to this loco, its like a car though once the chassys bent its never the same ,lol,
Its actually been fixed by g.e. its an insurance right of so can't be used on outside railways just in side the g.e. complex!!!!!!
superb footage, doubt we will ever see 70012,with the lease costs and reliability issues,no.
That van's not an Escort, it's a Transit ;-)
Great video!
A couple questions...
What was the reason for transporting it to Liverpool instead of shipping it back out from Newport?
Also, was the frame too weakened to move slowly by rail?
We've seen these on the dock in Erie, as well as many export locos on flat cars moving on the main line to Norfolk to ship out. Apparently this one was moved by rail the couple miles from the dock back to the GE plant.
Small docks at Newport and no direct services to the US. Liverpool has a weekly sail so a night drive of 200 miles caught the large container ship. I was the only person at Newport who saw its departure..........Thanks for watching..Mike in Llanblethian, Wales.
cool vid, just drags abit. I noticed how the loco was bent, so was it just shiped over like everything else?
I was at the dock the day it was dropped
Yeah
Brand new and totalled..
That's what happens when you drop one !
It was the coldest day of the year when they were being unloaded. It was chain fatige ( so I'm told ) so no one was blamed. I beleive it's now used as a shunting loco in the yard where it was built
Mike...off to a sunny day at Didcot...May 2013
Can see the damage caused to its body work that’s taken a good wack
It was dropped inside the boat as it was being unloaded. MINE IS THE ONLY VIDEO OF IT MOVING !!

Sounds like someone forgot to check the safety certificate on the lifting chains.
Butter fingers
i assume FL are a loco down now or its there a 66 to replace it
No replacement was made; they have some standing idle at present. August 2018
*class 70 * im bored now can we do something *66s* nope
All 66 deliveries are on my pages, from 1998-2014
Is this the Loco that was dropped while being unloaded ?
yep
so what exacatly happened to it?
It was dropped during unloading at Newport Docks
What happened to the guy that dropped the 70
It probably wasn't his fault, but I'm no expert.
Well, I guess it won't be catching fire anytime soon ...
Now being used for spare parts in the US
It would've buffed out if it was a Electro-Motive :)
What happened to it after? Was it scrapped?
Went back to Canada and used for spare parts
I wouldn't be surprised if this loco was scrapped, if not still going through repairs, but freightliner no longer want the class 70s so colas rail would take it if wanted
It's being used for spare parts, so it never ran on BRITISH RAIL, only the M4/M50/M6
a train doing more miles by road than rail haha
Maybe the ghost of Britannia 70012 'John of Gaunt' was jealouse of some foreign loco having its number!
what surprises me about this, is the FL didn't tarpaulin it up, or cover 'their' name.
Why would they? Its nothing to be embarrassed about.
Maybe you missed the news story. The chains snapped as the loco was being lifted off the ship and it fell nose first back into the hold, Consequently breaking its back and the loco was a write off and returned to the US never to run on UK rails. Very few people have seen 70012 that's why I've posted a long sequence. I was the only one to capture it moving ! Mike
What would have been funny if the truck had gone round a corner a bit to lively & the loco fell off on to its side :D
lol yes i would love that
It was withdrawn
Yes, it went back to the supplier in the USA, so this is the only recording of her on the move!
love to know who had to pay for it.
I think it was the shipping company as it dropped inside the boat as it was being lifted out, on the coldest day of the year
thank you sounds about right
Yeah I obviously missed it. lol. Thank u.
he got promoted (smiles)
Quite clearly not the usa
She was returned to the supplier in Erie, Pennsylvania, and is still there !.....Don't understand your comment ?

unbelievably ugly. If that's Nr 12, there are others. Scrap the lot!
It looks better than the 66!
@@osiantownsendjones2833 You're alone with that one. There's building plant that looks better than this deformity.
@@1258-Eckhart Well, it's a matter of opinion, not fact.
@@osiantownsendjones2833 No sorry, I was subjectively confirming a general aversion to the 70, which I have never seen (in that measure) for the 66. So keep your opinion on the 66 (which is certainly not one of the finest), the repulsiveness of the 70 has reached a certain generality (which precludes "opinion").
@@1258-Eckhart Maybe most people find the 66 more attractive, but the matters is still subject to opinion.
