Hi, I have the Sam set up. I’m Ferd, from Winnipeg, owned a company in lawn care for 27 years, in that time, I’ve sharpened about 65,000 blades. Half of that time, I used a Bradley Blade Sharpener due to sharpening left and right sided blade required on the Walker Mowers. I’ve since sold my company but prematurely sold the best blade sharpener before I knew I wanted to continue sharpening blade on the side. That sharpener first cost about $350, now it’s about $900ca. This week I bought and received a bench grinder similar to yours, especially cuz it had 4” X 2” platforms on both wheels to guide the blade for a more consistent and professional grind. I noticed you’re sharpening your blade upside down blindly and without a consistent smooth control of the blade movement, leaving an inconsistent grind requiring a follow up with hand filing to complete the process. I’ve hacked my grinder to grind facing the top of the blade, gliding the blade gently into the wheel in one stage rather than two stages with a professional finish at a 30 degree angle in about 1 minute per blade. The hack is that the 2 platforms angle away from the wheel so as to sharpen chisels at an upward angle but the way they’ve designed the platforms, they are restricted from angling down toward the wheel. They purposely designed the bracket the platform is attached to be rounded on the outside so it can angle away from the wheel but more square on the inside to restricting the platform angling down into the wheel, preventing creation of a 30 degree angle against the wheel. The hack is to grind the inside of the bracket similar to the outside so you can angle in both directions. This allows you to see the top of the blade as your grinding, a smooth, consistent gliding surface, a 30 degree factory angle, and a professional one step process and finish in about one minute. I hope you might look into to this and comment, thanks.

Thank you for this video instructional, including the demonstration on balancing blades. This is the help & advice I needed for my first time sharpening a lawn mower blade on my father’s grinder.

You can’t sharpen a blade free floating it on the grinding wheel like that. It’s a massive accident waiting to happen. Here’s the trick to sharpening your blades on the bench grinder. FIRST! You have to adjust the angle of the little table your blade sits on while you’re passing it through the grinder. That’s a must!
SECONDLY! You have to let the blade sit on that little angled table rested flat on it and draw it through from one end to the other without stopping. Just a nice even speed grinding it lightly every pass. LASTLY! Let the grinder do all of the work. Never push on the blade into the grinding wheel when grinding. It gouges your piece and causes premature uneven wear on the grinding stone. Uneven wear fucks up everything else you grind. Your job is to pass it through evenly from one end to the other. That’s it bro. Don’t rush it. Hope the tips help.

Note you can spray paint blades after sharpening to keep rust away.
