Our 2019 tour of Albania and the Balkans was amazing! This is the fifth episode in our series that takes us around the shores of UNESCO-designated Lake Ohrid, a stunning and historic paradise along the mountainous border between North Macedonia and Albania. We visit the popular Ohrid sites in North Macedonia before driving to the quieter beaches near Tushemisht, Albania. Our journey to and around the lake includes a stop in fortified Elbasan, a walk through a former dictator's favorite hunting grounds, a tour through a peaceful monastery, and a short stroll by the cafes of Korce. Prepare to be blown away by castle views, picturesque beaches, incredible history, and some of the freshest food we've ever tasted!

Greece annexed about half of Macedonia in 1912-13. Many ethnic Macedonians were expelled in the process. In 1921-1922, hundreds of thousands of Greek refugees fleeing genocide in Ottoman Turkey were settled in this part of Macedonia, dramatically changing its ethnic makeup. The remaining Macedonians were subjected to multiple cultural and linguistic restrictions. Many were again deported during the Greek Civil War. When Yugoslavia's disintegration led to Macedonia's independence, Greece officially launched a national myth that everything Macedonian is Greek and started punishing independent Macedonia for being its humble self. The Western-imposed renaming of Macedonia under the Prespa treaty is illegal and undemocratic. Greece still denies the existence of ethnic Macedonians anywhere in the world. This is Macedonia, not North Macedonia.

Did you use a private guide for your whole trip or just around the lake? Did ChooseBalkans set it all up for you two or did you do some on your own? We plan on going in June 2020 of 21 days. Your trip looked fantastic.

Dr Marcus Ettinger we used a guide for the entire 14 day tour, and it was fantastic. Usually, we like to travel independently, but we had read that roads could be a bit tricky in Albania. While that wasn’t necessarily true, we couldn’t have been more happy with our tour and our guide. Alban is the owner of Choose Balkans, and he worked with us directly to organize the tour. Our tour was a “group” tour, but we happened to be the only two people who booked for that date, with the exception of one other American who joined for a few days of it. Our guide, Kreshnik “Nik” was absolutely fantastic and an invaluable resource in navigating the country and experiencing things we never would have experienced on our own. Take this from two people who prefer traveling on their own, we couldn’t possibly recommend Choose Balkans any more. They were incredibly honest, knowledgeable and accommodating.

A quick add, we did have some free time in the evenings some days, and since it was just the two of us, our guide let us choose how much hand holding we wanted. We actually preferred to hang close to him because we learned so much from him and actually became what we’d consider to be pretty good friends with him during the tour. It was more like traveling with a local friend.

My partner and I like to put on this Balkan/Albanian playlist and then make a drinking game out of how many times you lovebirds say "UNESCO world heritage site" :O)

Ohrid? That's southwest Macedonia, not "north". Not watching this crap.

We just think people should go visit.
We understand that the area is part of some disputes, and we just referred to it by the name used by our Albanian guide.
Regardless of the proper name, it’s a wonderful place. ❤️

We understand that not everyone agrees on naming conventions. We only try to use the most current and widely known terminology in an effort to encourage people to explore new regions. It is never our intent to offend anyone on one side or the other of a dispute. We only wish to encourage people to travel and break down stigmas and stereotypes. Cheers.

Great to hear! I don’t know if it’s the same with all guides, but ours kind of worked for himself and would drive for whichever company needed him at the time. We’ve kept in touch with him ever since our trip.
What were trip highlights for you?

@@LandlockedLovebirds We have kept in touch with our guides as well! Our highlight ironically was NOT what we would have guessed. We LOVED the Pogradec community and night walks (we have little ones) and Girokaster's vibe!
We plan to go back soon. How about you???
