Thank u. This is the most helpful guide I found. I just bought 2 brown anoles. I just got what even they threw at me at pet smart but I think I'm still missing a lot.
I visited Florida with my aunt and her friends parents had a bunch of these running around in their backyard, and as someone from the north of the US, pretty much on the US/CA Border, seeing lizards just running wild in a yard was really weird
Used to have some of these, but keeping humidity where I live is near impossible,so after they passed,we never got more,I do keep five lined skinks and they do way better in a dryer environment, the only thing I have to do is pour water over the substrate, which is soil from outside mixed with coco fiber and wood chips, and it works great for them, and these lizards are communal,I currently have an adult female and a juvenile.
Its winter here in Texas and I found one of these guys in my bathroom. I didn’t want him to die outside because its so cold, so I’ve been taking care of him
lol south Florida, heads-up for anyone visiting Florida, they all over north Florida as well, we got them in Gainesville, Jacksonville, Tallahassee, Panama city, all over the place... Florida is pretty much lizard country
My lizard cage is set up by a east window for light are use a heat lamp for heat you say the at night the temperature gets colder in the house. Also it’s she’s in a 10 gallon tank with no screen for her to crawl on the walls what would you suggest for her to climb on
We add branches and utilize both fake and live plants for our anoles. Anoles are able to climb glass, so that shouldn't be an issue. They need both heat and UVB as they are diurnal animals, and keep in mind that UVB doesn't penetrate through most glass used in homes so putting them in front of a window will not provide that.
Oh, im getting 1 bahaman on at least the 23rd (im in ontario) and this guide really helped, if its a boy i like rudy, roo for short, and if its a girl i like raina
Welcome to reptile ownership! We do want to recommend some caution with this setup. Bahaman anoles are actually invasive in some of the southern parts of the United States and actually drive the green anoles out. If you see any aggression, you may need to separate them. Ours are separated by species.
Great video! A couple questions! How do you spot clean? What do their poops and pee look like? Do you have to replace substrate? Also, can we feed them freeze-dries insects instead of live? Thanks!
Spot cleaning is pretty easy, we do it on a daily basis. It essentially consists of pulling out or scrubbing off any urates or poops, pulling out any dead feeder insects, cleaning the water bowl and replacing with new water, and occasionally churning up the bedding so it stays as fresh as possible. Anole waste is very tiny, but it will show up as tiny spots of brown, with a dot of white - that's their urates. We replace the substrate every few months. It might be sooner if you don't stay on top of the cleaning, or longer if you're very diligent about cleaning and if the enclosure is setup to be bioactive. We would not feed them freeze dried insects. These guys need live feeders like small crickets, tiny dubia roaches, or small worms. The movement from the insect helps get them into hunting and feeding mode. Freeze dried insects also do not contain the same amount of nutrition and water content as live insects do.
Both species are abundant in the southeastern US. The green anole is native, whereas the invasive brown anole, from Cuba and the Bahamas, has taken over much of their territory. Unfortunately the brown anole is damaging the green anole population.
They're essentially the same. But the Males Bahama Anoles are much more territorial than the Male Green Anole. But the Females of both Green and Bahama Anoles are the same.
Hi. I recently found a wild brown anole in my yard that is blind and I want to take it in. Could you give me some special care tips/instructions please?
@TyeDyedIguana both green and brown. Mostly brown, tho. I always see them climbing my curtains out of the corner of my eye. I'm starting to think its the same brown every time lol. He gives me a look
First thing is to check your husbandry. Make sure they have proper basking spot temperatures available, tropical UVB lighting, humidity, vitamin dusted feeders, and plenty of climbing space and some hiding places. If that's all taken care of, it might be what you're trying to feed. These guys can have small crickets, dubia roach nymphs, mealworms or other small prey items. They should be fed live, as they often rely heavily on movement to encourage hunting behavior.
@@TyeDyedIguana I got a feeder that sticks to the side of the tank with a suction cup and put mealworms in it. They have climbing space, live plants, branches, UVB lighting, calcium and I mist regularly. They're interested in the mealworms but don't try to eat them for some reason?
We do not recommend dried house flies. Anoles feed best on live, moving prey, as it helps to engage their hunting instincts. Wild-caught insects may also harbor parasites or potentially come in contact with pesticides, so we recommend purchasing feeder bugs from your local pet supplier instead.
They're small and active little guys, so we recommend every day for especially younger ones. Adults you can do every day or every other day. They don't eat a lot at once and burn through it pretty quickly.
We don't really recommend freeze dried insects, unless you want something on hand as a backup in case of emergency. Lots of lizards, anoles included, don't really go into "hunting mode" without some movement from their prey. Live crickets also help provide the animal with moisture and has a slightly better nutritional profile.
We generally do not recommend mixing species. We caution that cohabitation among even the same species must be done carefully. Brown anoles in the wild are well known for displacing the green anole from their native territory as they are faster and potentially more territorial, and would likely result in bullying.
We recommend any cohabitation to be done with caution. A 10 gallon is the bare minimum for a single adult anole. More adults mean more space. Males should not be housed together as they are territorial, females generally get along okay. A pair will breed, which can be hard on the female.
We offer them fresh RO water in a small bowl, as well as misting their enclosure twice a day. Typically they prefer the water droplets on the glass after misting, but we like to keep it available at all times in a bowl anyway.
Feel so bad how I took care of mine when I was a kid...I dont even think I had water for it .just feed it crickets..no special lighs for it ...sigghh😔😔
We all make mistakes! Years ago we didn't have near the amount of information out on reptile keeping as we do today. It's also important not to lay the blame on your younger self. We always tell parents that while their new pet might be for their kid, ultimately they're responsible for making sure the animal gets everything it needs.
Thank you for this! A Bahaman Anole hitched a ride from Miami to Minnesota on a plant I bought. We don’t want him to die so we are taking care of him.
Glad we could be of some help! Sometimes these guys just end up where they aren't supposed to be, so thank you for taking him in!
Oh my gosh this happened to me! I bought a Draceana from Aldi. And now we have Carlos :-D
A brown anole hitched a ride for me too!
Same here but from FL to NJ. Found it today so went out and got what we needed now it has a home!
same! a green anole took a free ride inside of a coca cola bag!

Even in the winter months, these guys adapt remarkably well! They often use human dwellings to their advantage to keep warm.

sounds about right! they can be pretty shy
What heat bulb would you recommend for a Bahaman anole?
That can vary depending on set up size, ideally you'll want a hotspot of 90 for these guys, which we obtain using a 50 flood for a 20 gal long
