I've been DJing for over 20 years and a turntablist for exactly 20 (my first battle/turntablist routine). It is incredibly eye opening seeing the realization of these techniques in a fairly new DJ. Makes me recall teaching myself these lessons in solitary through trial and error. You are a treasure for our art and culture @Rob Swift. Thank you so much.
I was just about to write the same thing he just has a way to reach you and dig deep in side his students so that they can understand what he is trying to teach them I say that because I feel it when I watch his videos
Rob Swift is the best teacher. He breaks things down so well. If I were in NY I would be 100% taking these lessons in person. These people are SUPER lucky to have him.
i love watching all of swifts tutorial videos. he breaks down all the fundamentals in such a way that its methodical and easy to understand. as i have said before he is a great teacher and can articulate his thoughts clearly. wish i could go back in time and have a teacher like this!
Many props for sharing this and what you're doing, because for many of us this is an amazing and unseen oportunity to learn this art from the mentor we never were able to have. Been involved with HipHop culture for long, mostly breaking and painting but being from a small town I had to learn by myself until I started travelling and meeting other people, never had a great mentor to teach me the right path, the foundations or preventing me from learning wrong. So now I definitely appreciate all the knowledge you are dropping and sharing so other people could learn the right way if they want to get into turntablism and Djing. It's now when I realize how fast and consistent one could learn with the right mentor! This is what this is all about, each one teach one and the internet is giving us a real, creative and positive oportunity when used right. Peace out!
Man its great to see the patience of your teaching. I could hear him get better as he went on.I even learns some stuff from this. Wish i would have had this when i started 30 plus years ago.
Man I’ve been watching these videos, and they’ve made my approach so completely different to my djing, and it’s incredibly different. Thank you for posting these
I know this is an older video and I don't know if you'll read this - I was deliberating between getting into DJing or purchasing more music production gear - you definitely made my mind, I'm just sad I can't start on vinyl directly...
As a drum teacher, I would expect them to practice the 8th and 16th notes with a metronome starting slowly and then gradually raising the bpm, as well as going over a sheet of classic scratch patterns and practicing those with the metronome.
I watched him grow very quickly from the beginning to the end but there were times where I would have liked to see him given more time on his passes. Especially on the last one. Watch his left hand he's controlling the record like an experienced scratcher just before he's stopped.
i think he could have started the scratch with the beat counts like 1 and 2 and 3 and 4 and release....that might work fixing his timing on the scratch. Great tutorials Sir Rob....
These videos are so good! Question for anyone who is knowledgeable... I want to get a starter controller; Is the DDJ 400's good enough for starting equipment for mixing hip-hop?
what a nice and patient teacher!!!
