How to make Puertorican Bistec Encebollado(Steak and Onions)

  • Today's episode is one of my favorite puerto rican dishes. Bistec encebollado ( Steak and onions). It's usually seved with white rice. It's very simple to put together, but it takes a while to cook. You want the beef to be nice and tender, and the onions to be crunchy.I love to serve this with habichuelas guisadas(stewed beans)
For the bistec encebollado the ingredients are:
2lbs of cubed steak ( If you can't find cubed steak, buy small steaks and ask the butcher to pass it thru the tenderizing machine twice)
    6 cloves garlic
    Olive oil
    Meat tenderizer without seasoning
    Oregano
    Cumin
    Onion powder
    Adobo Goya
    1/4 cup vinegar
2 large white onions, cut in rounds
    Canola oil
    2 cups water

    For the White rice:

2 cups white long grain rice
    21/4 cup water
    salt to taste
    Canola oil
    For the Habichuelas Guisadas(stewed beans)
1 can (16oz) pink or red beans
    4 oz tomato sauce
2 tblsp or 2 cubes sofrito
    Cumin
    Oregano
    1 pkg Sazon Knorr
    1 pkg Ham seasoning

    Buen Provecho!

Ok, I am 56 years old. My precious Puerto Rican wife has cooked for me for over 39 years. Now I get home WAY earlier than she does. Bueno now I do the cooking! I always made bistec con cebollas BUT I would add salsa. I made it exactly like you did and as I was serving dessert “ Me dio un beso” and she said Thank you babe…. Pero quien te enseñó? Obviamente le dije que fue usted. We are now both Subscribers to your channel. Gracias y muchas bendiciones.

Many ppl don't like tomato sauce, but. True biste encebollado , no va con salsa de tomate. Once you add tomato sauce, it's biste guisado. Just made your recipe. Delicious!

I have NEVER seen the bistec cooked like this. Thank you!
I've been in the kitchen since I was 9 years old with my abuelita. I've always made it the way she taught me. She would season it with ajo molido, sal, pimienta, vinagre y aceite y luego picaba cebolla y se la ponia por encima and then she'd marinate it for a day or two and then cook on low heat until tender, half way of cooking time she'd cut up another onion and add it as she liked it with lots of onions, sometimes she'd even add green and red bell peppers to the bistec.
Thanks for sharing your recipe. ❤

I love that you don’t use adobo my mom always looks at me like I’m crazy and tries to throw some adobo in my food when I’m cooking but I be trying to tell her I’m following a recipe let me cook. Btw I’m 22 I had a stroke a few years back and cooking has become something that makes me feel like I can do anything following all your recipes has taught me how to make all the food that my grandmother makes but with different ingredients and that’s what I like About them thank you

I'm going to make this for my kids tonight. My kids grew up spending more time with the father's side of the family (from the south) and being that I was never thought how to cook except for rice and beans (I'm puerto rican) i have been learning new dishes and so far they love them. I've tried making bistek before, pero nada like this. So I'm gonna try it and add tostones.

Shaun everyone cooks differently. From what I saw the bistec looked really nice and tender so that worked for her. Those other ways probably don't come out as soft as this. I'm Puerto Rican, I live here and all her recipes are authentic Puerto Rican foods. A few ingredients might change bc not everyone cooks the same or has the same taste. For example in my habichuelas guisadas I use cooking ham and potatoes if I have on hand. If not I'll make them just like hers. Ida, I love your channel. When I cook criolla food I call my mom and grandma now I won't have to. Thanks for your videos!

By the way, if you add sauce to your bistec encebollado, it's no longer just bistec encebollado; it's now bistec gisao. Kudos to your husband and your dad for their contributions!

@Cathy Velazquez no necesita desinfectarla. Eso se hacia cuando la carne era de fincas y carniceros. La carne que se compra ahora es procesada en carnicerias que don licensiadas y las inspeccionan para limpieza.

Finally I find someone who makes it like my mom lol, no sofrito no tomato sauce, just oil and vinegar. I love to eat this with homemade fries

Thanks for your videos, I'm 25 and been married for 4 years. Though my father is boricua, I never learned how to make authentic Puerto Rican food! (Even going to PR every year of my life till the age of 15 didn't do it) I've just made anything and put sofrito in it lol. But I made this the other night and my husband was pleased. I think I put too much vinegar however, the taste was just a bit vinegary. And as for the beans, I actually was taught by my father to do it this way, so thanks!!
