    Hey sweetie! I have quite few sinkingfunds, and I get down to the number I have with category’s rather then specific names. Like celebrations (birthdays, hollydays special ovations), travel (the trip to my parents, the amusement park and going abroad all live here), looks (make up, clothing, hair, nails), health (dr, meds, therapy, supplements, gym) life (home things, car, pets, garden) and my food category in my wallet includes more then food (eating out, pet food and cat litter, my food, toiletries I can get in a normal shop, laundry stuff, washing up liquids and all that stuff I need on a day to day basis). I also use my spending money for a bit more then others (like Spotify, small events like going out or to the cinema, consort tickets, basicly combined with a fun category). When I have a good amount in one, there is nothing stopping me from breaking it down in to smaller sections, but for now the most important thing for me is to have some stuff put away.

    @cindydeosaran8029 Рік тому

    Hi, I agree that too many categories is overwhelming. So I keep mine really simple. Ex. Transportation envelope = gas, insurance, repairs anything vehicle related. Medical envelope =dental, vision, glasses, medicine etc. I wish you all the best.

    For you at this stage, I think car and pets are your must have sinking funds-then maybe add in gifts. I also think that there is an underlying "competitiveness" to have the most envelopes and the most savings challenges on the go at one time. I follow one budgeter who has had a huge life change and it seems from having a handful of challenges she's gone down to one-sometimes less really is best. good to see you back Tara!

    • @TaraBudgets
      @TaraBudgets  Рік тому

      i definitely this there is a sense of competition whether we realize it or not and sometimes it’s just not realistic!! i’ve definitely realized that throughout this year and i’m so glad to start fresh and start slow

    I think you do a very good job at keeping it at a minimal. I do believe that you and your husband should budget together, and figure out what is important to you both, and what categories are must and which ones are wants.

    For tracking, if it would work for you, maybe just use your phone in the notes app to keep track for the week or pay period. I do this and it works for me for tracking and I use my cc because of the rewards and just put my weekly budget amounts in a note and jot down in my notes whenever I spend.

  • @Sierra_Lynn
    @Sierra_Lynn Рік тому

    I keep the receipts for everything I pay for out of my cash envelopes and keep reusable trackers in each envelope.
    For Sinking Funds, I have permanent ones for Gifts, Car, Clothing & Cat. Then I have 1-3 other ones that are for current savings goals.

    I'm all for not having envelopes for everything! I combine what makes sense. Upkeep is for home/car, anything that can be for upkeep of something in our house. I have a folder for our dog since he has monthly meds (and vet visits!). I pull his food from our normal grocery budget, easiest for us. Another one that is combined is the part that we always used to use card, go over budget, spend too much! Holidays is a folder I have for those we celebrate/spend money. We have 2 kids, so I save for their birthdays as well. Any gifts for others comes out of our grocery budget (so our grocery budget is food, household goods, etc. I combine it all into one spending pot). When I was planning this, I looked at what we spend, listed out folders for them and finally got them narrowed down to what made sense to me without having TOO many envelopes. When I started, I decided to do this in steps. If I did all the things at once, I knew I'd get overwhelmed and just give up. Starting slow is great!

We fell of the budget wagon for something like 12 yrs and getting back to it was hard at first. We’ve only been back to budgeting for 10 months but have noticed a big difference. I also moved a lot of sinking funds to digitally because realistically it’s not safe or best for me to take $900 out of the bank every 2 weeks. So far I just take out cash for my cash envelopes and like 4 sinking funds. The rest of my sinking funds are digital.
