Iraq to Purchase 12 JF-17 Thunder Block 3 Fighter Jets from Pakistan
In a major boost to its air force, Iraq has signed a contract to purchase 12 JF-17 Thunder Block 3 fighter jets from Pakistan. The deal, worth an estimated $1.2 billion, is expected to be finalized in the coming months.
The JF-17 Thunder is a multirole fighter jet developed jointly by Pakistan and China. It is a lightweight, fourth-generation aircraft that is capable of carrying a variety of air-to-air and air-to-ground weapons. The Block 3 variant of the JF-17 is equipped with a more powerful engine, improved avionics, and a wider range of weapons.
The acquisition of the JF-17 Block 3 will significantly enhance Iraq's air force capabilities. The jets will be used to counter air threats, provide close air support to ground forces, and conduct strike missions against enemy targets.
The deal with Iraq is the latest in a series of export successes for the JF-17 Thunder. The aircraft has already been sold to Myanmar and Nigeria. The Block 3 variant is also being considered by several other countries, including Argentina and Azerbaijan.
The acquisition of the JF-17 Block 3 is a sign of Iraq's commitment to modernizing its military. The jets will help to strengthen Iraq's air defense capabilities and deter potential adversaries.
