What's great is that Brian Cox has such an easy time playing Logan Roy because that's his actual personality, lol. I really like him as an actor and loved this interview with him being honest.
Brian's idea is so interesting. You can see how deeply he understands Logan's want for one of them to suvmcceed him but they always fall short one way or another. But then he understands the flaw in Logan: the man needs to let go. He's going to go one way or another and his biggest flaw is that he doesn't pick any and it's probably going to lead to an even bigger conflict when he dies. At this point watching, I've always picked shiv but they usually work best when they're working together. Or worse.
Brian's advice to his character was as though he hadnt picked up on the fact that his character is a narcissist who damaged his children in exactly the way narcissists do: manipulating people with an unrestrained conscience, only doling out praise or support or attention when it served him and having no qualms about cutting someone down so that he stayed on top...even when that person was his child. He pits the siblings against each other instead of encouraging them to support each other--because together, they might be too strong for him; he refuses to be a "loser," and he views his kids' success as a threat to his status. His kids are emotionally stunted, unable to be vulnerable with each other or intimate with their spouses because in the Roy family, mistakes and weaknesses become ammunition. When a narcissistic parent (like Logan) makes their child feel like they'll never be good enough, they end up somewhat broken, chasing "good enough" for the rest of their life, desperately trying to prove themselves because they never got that affirmation from the one person they absolutely SHOULD have heard it from. The kids are all deeply afraid of being perceived as inadequate or foolish, which is why theyre so mean and aloof with everyone, including each other. Their childhood is hinted to be a traumatic one, and how could it be anything but? If you can't be emotionally safe at home, with family, with your dad, then no one and nothing seems safe. I think that's the heart of the show--there is comedy and smart writing, but the depth comes from the great tragedy of a dad being unable to love his kids in the way every kid needs to be loved, and the fallout that goes with that. So yea, I was pretty shocked Brian said exactly what his character would say.
Your take makes perfect sense with the finale. It was the plot and the cause of all of the thing that happened in the end. Such a great show!! I already miss it 😢😢
Not just emotional abuse but we know for a fact that Roman got physically abused as a kid and there's been zero acknowledgement from Logan of that. Kendall, being the oldest of the trio, and assuming the protective brother role immediately when things go south, probably has had his share of lashings. Connor, checking out early mentally and being distant from the corporate politic, has probably also fared his share of trauma. Brian takes no accountability of any if this and reduces it to his children 'not being serious enough'. This is as disturbing as when Amanda Seyfried ended up empathising with Elizabeth Holmes while playing her and thought it unfair that she had to carry forward her pregnancy in a detention facility.
I love how they all love and support the characters they play. Brian doesn’t say a word against Logan, Nicholas gives great backstory on Greg which makes sense. Jeremy takes on Kendall’s pain. Keiran literally did not change his personality, Roman just lives a different lifestyle. This ensemble is remarkable
I think it's smart when they hire very professional, very seasoned actors, and they recognize that these actors have good instincts and listen to their input. I'm sure it would have been good anyway but suspect that a little extra zest comes from the actors' ideas.
omg i love Brian Cox's answer so so much in this interview, especially when he talks about how much logan actually loves his kids and is tortured by how none of them actually lives up to his standards, like giving the bigger insights from logan's perspective that he is not the villain of the story, loved this interview sm !!! witty questions and great delivery!!!
that;s the point, logan never actually did put those eggs into those particular baskets. when i hear brian cox talk about logan and his kids’ incompetence, i feel like he might be just as bad as logan. or just blind to his character’s ruthlessness. logan was willing to f_ck his own son and throw him to the wolves just to keep himself out of prison. logan manipulated kendall in a moment and on a point of extreme sensitivity at the end of season one. he saw a chance to have him in his pocket and operate him like his little personal robot. and those are only two of many memorable instances of his fatherly love. it’s a little bit late of logan, now that he’s with one foot closer to the grave, to be disappointed. his kids are what he made them. he has three kids, and none of them is not f_cked up. there must be a reason for that, no?
He has four kids, lol, don't forget about Connor. And Logan's parenting is literally why authoritarian parenting is always hoisted by one's own petard: in order for any of the kids to be good leaders, they need experience leading, and Logan absolutely refuses to give them this experience because it would mean giving up some of his own control. Whenever one of his kids even tries to show initiative or be competent in some way, he cracks down on them immediately even if it's not the most business savvy thing to do, because he just can't stand it. And then he's disappointed that none of them are competent. Does he love them? Yes. But he loves them in an extremely controlling way, where he simultaneously resents them for not being functional adults and really desperately doesn't want them to be functional adults because it makes him irrelevant and powerless.
I agree. Even though he wants one of kids to be good enough to lead the company his own ego wont let him step down even when it would be better for the company when he had his stroke in season 1
@@ocg6 I kinda feel like throughout the show we see that none of the kids would do well on their own but also have their own unique talents. The thing is, Logan pits them against each other so much they literally throw away any substantive ideas they might have had to the company just to grasp onto power more firmly and soothe their egos, and then he complains that none of them are succeeding and goes, "there, I knew it that you were incompetent."

I agree, 100%. It's a fact that after a certain point we, not our parents, are in charge of our own development. This, however, applies to Logan as well. Not hearing any sign of responsibility or remorse for the way his children turned out, or for his own actions, is something I expected from Logan, but not from the actor playing him. I took it more as him speaking from the perspective of Logan, which show me one person that has that level of self awareness, can own up to every messed thing they’ve done and can speak frankly about their part in someone else’s suffering? I haven’t met one. We always see our own side as the victim side. That’s just flawed human nature. So I think Brian is speaking about how Logan sees the situation. And sure, Logan wanted one of his kids to be the “killer” that he is, and not one of them had it. He does blame himself for that, because indeed, they’re spoiled, and that means he failed as a father. He does love them in his narcissistic, broken way, otherwise he wouldn’t even have bothered to try and groom Kendall to take over. Broken parents that love us but fuck us up are a very common occurrence in the real world. Both things can most certainly be true at the same time. He did seriously consider Shiv and Roman at certain points, to then change his mind about their preparedness. It’s all true from Logan’s messed up, biased perspective. Just like any other flawed human being.

The whole cast wrapped up in a bow. Brillant!
This left me Greggin for more, ngl
dude Gerri LOVEEEED those Calls, did you see her face light up??
I wish we had a series with Logan 45-65 Year old in the business.
my favorite line is "What's that? Date r**e by Calvin Klein?"
Full disclosure: I live in Portland, and Bryan Cox has been here filming for a movie. I legit went down to the set hoping to find him to tell me to f*ck off. I wanted that sooooo badly, lol. Being on a movie set was cool but no Bryan in sight 🤷♀️ had to tell my own self to f*ck off and go home 😂
"F**k off". 😉
amaxing amazing cant wait to watch the final season
5:40 i think a Disco Elysium style would fit Succession. Skills based on greed and corporate bs? Imma eat it
Man someone tell Jesse to make a spinoff with Greg and Tom
I think Roman gets it!🤞🏻❤️🔥
Actually a Succession game could be you pick to be one of the siblings and you have to strategise your way to CEO. Think.of all the complexity you could write into the game! You could even allow people to play Greg or Tom with the same mission to get to the top.
i think succession would be a complex text-based rpg like disco elysium, playing as a shitty rich kid in a nepotism job
Brian, when your character tells someone to fuck off, he delivers it with such a dismissal that it somehow feels like the better option, that just “fucking off” is the better of two punishments.
or it’s just cool to witness power, and daddy roy has a *lot* of power. (sorry)
¨I will win!¨ Holy Brian Cox.
Everyone talking about how these people are like their characters because of their advice to their characters gotta stop. They know what kind of advice they’d give their own characters because they know who their characters are, they’re speaking from their characters’ pov. Y’all gotta chill out acting like you know their characters better than they do 😭😭
where is Jeremy Strong in all these cast interviews?
I don’t think his acting style is well received by some of the other cast members-according to a vanity fair article I recently read. He’s kind of hard core. Kieran Culkin isn’t impressed nor are a couple of others.
@@eeeeks wow! it makes sense, he HAS got to be another Jared Leto ¨very very method¨ I mean I tried seeing interviews of him and he is cringe irl too, also I know im probably wrong but I always feel like he is lowering his voice some Austin Boutler and Elvis kinda ish...anyway thanx!
@@lazaromurad322 I don’t know if it’s cringe or not. He gets good results but for him personally, it might not be in his best interest in terms of having friendships, etc. I think he’s an excellent actor.
Brian Cox has to be the new Perry White, and Kieran must be a superhero. Can't tell if replacing Ezra in the new DCU or may Ted Kord. Has the potential.
God, I'm going to miss this show and these characters!!!!
Loved it. Such lovely talented people 🧡
08:35 Greg being Greg
¨Dad has his stroke or whatever...¨ LOL
Alan ruck kind of the ultimate g here
I've always wondered how everyone on crew thought about buckle up fuckle head😊
Brian Cox is so much like Logan
whenever I hear him I just remember him as starkweather from manhunt
Q1: "Who do you like acting with?"
Answers: "the one I act with most often is X, and second most often is Y"
Q2: "What if there was a succession videogame?"
...
More and more, I'm starting to feel like hollywood reporters don't really watch the show, and if they do, they don't get it. The questions are always generic or stupid. There are so many bad interviews of this cast, it's unreal. Like, I'm begging you, if you can't find somebody who gets the show to interview the cast, just don't do it. Can't you see these guys are tired? The studio keeps them up for like 20 hours straight doing these shits. Leave them to their families and stop wasting everyone's time.
Fuck off. This was a fun silly video ya fuckin donkey.
@Grant Hesseldine i know right? And the questions about “oooh what was your favourite insult?”
Man I hope they change their minds and make a season 5. Such an epic show.
They wont and I hope they don't. The story will be wrapped up after next week, pointless to do more except if it's maybe a prequel
If the story is over properly then its unnecessary
@@TheGogoy3 it’s not unnecessary if you’re a huge fan and want more lol jk but y’all are underestimating the talent of these writers. It could go many different directions and be so damn good.
After watching the finale, I actually agree with you guys now. There doesn’t need to be more. It ended perfectly!
@@93theproducer47 Yeah exactly what I meant. This is why the writers are talented, they knew how many seasons they wanted and they nailed it perfectly. An extra season just to milk it would be bad
13:56 i NEED to watch this scene so bad LMFAOOOOOO
I forgot Connor says "I'm the eldest son", because it mskes it even sadder Kendall say "Im the eldest boy!". It seems even more child-like than before
R to the I P
5:30 Actually I think Succession could make a fantastic "Tell tale" style game
2:45 finally I know how to say that
1:11 he’s so right I always found their scenes the most interesting and highlight of the show (Kendall and Logan)
I think is because they hold such a dramatic load. Ofc succession is funny and a dark comedy show but their relationship (and I dared to include kendall and shiv) is very touching. I dont think I'll like Kendall if it wasn't for Jeremy's performance. I actually believe is because he didn't believe the show was a comedy in the first place that I was able to see beyond
So Connor would be a NPC in the Succession video game 😂
Jeremy Strong is the best in Succession !
Sr. Brian Cox!
I’m so happy
Great review. Get what you mean about things resolving too quick or just going away.
I’m more than a sprinkle 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Lol i think the guy who plays Connor underestimates the wide gulf between how delusional Connor is and how delusional Willa is
avoiding imdb interviews from now on lol
Connor Roy was interested in politics at a very young age…
We will *
A video choice, virtual talk choices may wow. Safe travels!
The ending 😭😭😂
Magnificent!
Logan is the most dramatic character on the show… with the saddest destiny.
Conwilla all the way
Yeah we have to deal with them - after u tell me who u r
I wanna see Nick Braun and Adam Driver being in a show together!
Great idea to make a game Succession
16:05 is where our society is unfortunately spending too much time in these days.
I mean Greg isn't even pretending to try to be a talented actor called Nicholas Braun in that one
I want a spin-off where Connor actually becomes president and a Tom and greg one. Both would comedies tho.
I love how Greg says he took six months took six months to “get into character as a disgusting brother” lololo gross. We heard buddy
Greg calling himself fast is absolutely hilarious. He's too tall and too skinny to be fast. Cmon Greg.
Eerily Seinfeldian...:
- All selfish people
- no real hugging
- NYC
- All men and 1 woman
- Orbittal Sub plot characters
- Loose modern day references
- Annoying 8 bar riff soundtrack on the nose
- Out of touch parents moving A-plotlines
etc
"...some testes" 😂
cant believe i’m greg
WOW WOW I LAUGH SO HARD WATCHING THIS SHOW 🤣 😂 😭 I AM SICK 😫 GREAT SHOW ❤❤❤❤
The Superpower question was so stupid… superpower’s in a succession game?? Come on
The video game question was stupid 😅
❣❣❣❣❣
Where was kendall
Where’s your old man?
