  • So we fit the new injectors to the Deutz and see if she starts. This will be the first run in many many years.

    Absolutely endorse your praise for Attleborough Injectors. They did the injectors on my Perkins recently, came back like new and she runs so much better now.
    Are you booked in to Ellingham next weekend? I’ll hopefully be there trying to make some scratches in the ground with my Rollo plough.

    Thats nice to see her running, good man!
    I think your on to something with that knurled knob on the pump, i bet thats the fuel flow adjustment!
    On poiñt that concerned me was bending tube in a vice! The sharp corners on the jaws will kink the pipe and then its game over! Bend tube with a proper bender or round a dolly of some sort, even a round piece of wood is better than vice jaws.

    • @NorfolkMancave
      @NorfolkMancave  Рік тому +2

      Yes i agree. i was very mindfull when bending that to not let it put much pressure on the ends of the vice jaws. I was like pushing and bending at the same time to avoid just that.

    I'm mindful of "The Flight Of The Phoenix" - "You are wasting the cartridges, Mr Townes. Even you must understand that when there are no cartridges left, the Kaufman starter will be useless to us"......
    That's not a bad sounding little engine, but I think it needs a longer run to clear out all that diesel that's been squirted in there before she took off.
    I want to see this engine running for longer!🙋💥💥💥💥💥💥💥💥💥💥💥😚🎶

      @NorfolkMancave  Рік тому +1

      Yeah she is a tad noisy to be running for to long were We live. BUT next week its going to Mancave HQ so on a nice day will get a good couple of hours run there. Just sound like its over fueling.

      @@NorfolkMancave From memory, over fuelling results in great belts of black smoke. What you seemed to get was white smoke, which I think is more likely to be incorrect injection timing, or combustion of residual oil or fuel deposits in the cylinder. That's what makes me think a good long run to burn off all that oil from the reassembly, and fuel from the injector before it was serviced, and before the engine actually fired up - almost, but not quite a runaway. Could also explain the knocking from the cylinder?
      Just out of interest, have you ever felt the pulse of a diesel engine? It's a weird thing, but if you lightly grip the high pressure diesel line between finger and thumb, you can feel the pulse of the injector pump. Sometimes you need to try a few different spots along the pipe to find the best place, but once you've got the method, you can tell if an injector is cracking off properly. It was an old lad at the machinery sale yard who showed me how - quite fascinating to do. On a multi cylinder engine you can find a faulty injector that way, if there is one.

      Lol, that's a cartridge starter, pretty much an 8 gauge shotshell high brass base loaded with blank powder and a wax/sulfur wad on top. Some old diesel single cylinder tractors (major, I think) use a 12 ga cartridge starter, AND an impregnated paper heater squib you have to light first (which can be replaced with a couple inches of a cigarette, lol). Almost certain you can do the same with the Deutz if you run out of "real" self igniting heater squibs

    "Doyts" it is.. Despite being spelt Deutz.
    Dad's sovereign remedy for easier starting would be to fill the water hopper with boiling water straight from the kettle just prior to cranking it over. For some reason I thought you had to light those "Zundfix" capsules, like the papers in a Field Marshal. So I was surprised to see you just stick them in there and start cranking away. Amazing.
    Sounds good anyway.

    • @whitesapphire5865
      @whitesapphire5865 Рік тому +1

      One way to find out might be to try starting the engine without a Zundfix in position. If it starts up as easy as it did here, then perhaps so. If it refuses to start without one, then the logical answer would be no, they don't need pre-lighting.
      I wonder how a Zundfix burns if you do light one? Interesting question!

      I light mine for my rotovator but maybe I shouldn't. To answer your question tho they burn with a very strong glow. First one I did I dropped on a windy day and it continued to burn just as brightly. Also started the rotovator first crank after loads of failed attempts without!

  • @Equiluxe1
    @Equiluxe1 Рік тому

    Sounded to me like the injection is a bit retarded, diesel knock is caused by late ignition unlike petrol which is caused by early ignition so the pump really needs timing, no idea how that is done with that engine but most petter and listers were done with shims except for a few that had a rocker with a screw adjustment.

    • @byjingobob
      @byjingobob Рік тому

      I agree, I believe white smoke denotes a timing issue. Can be air in the injector/pipe.

    • @whitesapphire5865
      @whitesapphire5865 Рік тому +1

      @@NorfolkMancave White smoke comes from incorrect injection timing, which I think is unlikely, or from residual oil or fuel deposits in the cylinder, which can ignite after the injection point and resulting in incomplete combustion. At least that's what I was told. A good long run to get the cylinder, head and piston crown good and hot should burn off the excess and clean up the exhaust - If it doesn't, then it could well be oil coming past the rings.

      @@NorfolkMancave I think dexter meant shim the injector PUMP, that sets/affects the timing. It's pretty critical on this type of engine especially where you are fighting a lot of variables you don't fully understand. The more adjustments you can get in the ball park, the easier it will start and better it will run; the injector timing is probably the most important of them...
