Super. Don't know if it's out of your area, but do you know if they are doing any of this type of work in eastern Connecticut? Around New London, Groton and maybe up to the Norwich or Willimantic area? Thanks.
I grew up to seeing the dinner train and the green train with the two green cars on the back I can't believe how abandoned the tracks are with all the brush it'll be nice to see if the dinner train comes to serve Newport for tourist
This stretch of track is perfect, you've got your rails, you got some ties that need replacing, a little bit of weed killing, switch greasing, possibly 20k worth of supplies, maybe 10k of man power, this little engine that could, would pay for itself 4x, it doesn't need to be scrapped.
Very interesting, but no audio of anything. You could have done a little of the engine, the cab controls, the signal/gate operation, the debris removal track background.
Interesting exercise but it would have had far more impact if we could have seen, or at least be told, what type of locomotive was employed for this venture.
That is some bad track. Some places didn't have a good tie in 5. Are they going to rehab it? All the trees just gave that engine some free Kentucky pins stripes. They had to hy-rail it first to inspect it, but wow...
That is not exactly like the title claims "First train in two years" A single switch engine is not a train. It is good to see a line being used again rather than being turned into a bicycle/walking trail.
Just for the record a train is defined as a locomotive with or without cars in every railroad rulebook in North America. This group is doing a great job in preserving the line for rail use. The rebuilt segment to Newport station will have a rail with trail setup so as to keep train access to Newport. As mentioned in other comments the traffic is horrendous in this area during the season. If more of us email/contact RIDOT maybe there would be some money spent to make this a passenger shuttle line on the Island.
What was the purpose of risking life and limb on that questionable track? And was that bridge under construction or what? Nevertheless, bushwhacking videos are always fun.
No lives were at “risk”. A walking inspection was done prior and track doesn’t magically fall apart after a couple years of no use. The track has a good tie structure to support what was running over it because of a tie job a few years back.
Not abandoned. The line is currently not used regularly because of a large reconstruction project that included a rail with trail. Once done trains will be rolling again.
So, what’s the difference between a train and a locomotive? It isn’t just a matter of choice of words, although you’ll often find the two used interchangeably. Put simply; a locomotive is what provides power to allow the train to move. If a locomotive is pulling cargo hoppers or passenger cars, it then becomes a train. So, the next time you’re out trainspotting, or you hear someone say “look at that train,” when it’s just a locomotive not pulling (or pushing) anything, you’ll easily be able to explain the difference!
Every piece of track doesn't have to look like the Northeast Corridor to be safe for operation. It all depends on the speed and size of the train as well as the tie and rail condition. Appearance is not the only determining factor for tie condition nor for rail. Brush is an issue but I bet the authorities will squeak about spraying herbicides to control it. You would be amazed at the appearance of some track that is used all the time.
I am not usually a fan of ride-along videos, however, I watched this one from start to finish. I loved it. Thank you.

you should try using plastic composite ties
Composite ties are nice but super expensive. Triple the cost of a wood tie.
Rebuilding bridge to Newport would be great but if there’s just summer service it’s not worth it
There’s serious potential for year round service and freight because people commute to the base
