What a treasure to have.
As far as the little boys dressed up as girls. There was a time period, where babies and toddlers wore certain clothes until they reached certain ages. To this day, the Royals follow some of those traditions. They wear shorts for a while before they wear trousers or pants.
Similar to 150-200years ago, men wore sleeping gowns.

Hi-I have a first holy communion framed photo approx 1940 and one boy is dressed as a girl. Very common indeed but not sure why?

I know it is very interesting and I don't know why either nor have I ever researched it. But especially when folks are so against men dressing and dresses nowadays but back then it was incredibly common for boys to be dressed and dresses for a couple years after they were born and for communions. Odd, very odd. P S. Kilts are an exception to that rule. Men become a little more attractive and a kilt.
