I have quite a few synths, and I picked up a Subsequent 37 this summer. They are pretty special. Any synth with MIDI can do the same thing, but not all are great at responding to MIDI clock. One trick is to start the clock a bar before you need to hit record.

    • @ColtCapperrune

Now that I have this one, I suspected it was somewhat common. But when you try to do research on it, literally nothing comes up.

@@ColtCapperrune Don't try Polybrute then :) On top of what Moog VST can do, Arturia's (Polybrute only) can do it multi-instantiated. Your tracks in a DAW keep and switch preset on a track in your project you don't even need to save it to hardware. Arturia raises the plank of usability!
So I play Subsequent 37CV and Polybrute the most. I'm planning to "connect" DAW controlling Buchla and ARP2600m over CV using dc-coupled interface outs to replicate what Moog/Arturia VST can do ..... but never actually done that ... yet ... haha
      Cool playing in the mate!

If i could offer some advice, don't go down a crazy synth rabbit hole. Keep this as you main mono-duophonic synth and then get 1 solid poly synth (sequential for example) and you're done. Thats all most people need to cover most needs.

I’ve owned quite a few Moogs. The Subsequent 37 is my personal favorite. The filter slopes are really killer, and you can burn a day messing around with looping and syncing the envelopes. And it’s built like a tank.
The build quality is far superior than on the Matriarch.
    Excellent choice.

There are so many great modern analogue synths released in the last 8 years. Sequential/Dave Smith has some absolutely amazing synthesizers too.

Exactly. Excited you've discovered Subsequent 37. Exactly those features locking/linking to DAW with VST makes it my favorite mono analog synth! Companion VST is as beautiful as the Moog itself. Best, you can control more knobs then number of hands you have, by automating several same time thru DAW :)

Reasons I find synthesizers fun, they load up quicker then vsts, they take the load off your cpu, they don't crash and sometimes when your session crashes all the vst presets default to the 1st preset making it hard to know what presets you choose and the tweaks you had made, you can get more hands on, less using a mouse, they tend to hold value if/when you'd like to let go of them and sell something.
There's a beauty in the way synthesizers are crafted and the way they light up, (most times the sounds don't have fx on them like vsts do, having said that sometimes fx vsts with hardware really take the sound in a nice direction too.
What I don't like about hardware synthesizers, Some don't have midi, so your locked to recording in stereo or mono, hardware synthesizers can break, remembering which cables go where? Some are not as portable, some gear you can't buy anymore, wishing you got the synthesizer with more keys.

You use Pro Tools to control the Sub37. I use a MPC3000 or XL to MIDI control the Sub37 and the Korg Prologue in practically all the music that I've done over the past five years. All my other synths except for the Korg ARP Odyssey, are pre MIDI so I play them live alongside the Sub37 and Prologue performances that are controlled by the MPC.
Some may say beware the rabbit hole of the analogue synths. Me? I say embrace it until your mixing board is almost full. Even with a patch bay you will have to slow down then, lol. The Sub37 was my very first analogue synth so it has a special place in my heart too.

Hey man! As a guitarplayer and mostly songwriter myself - wanting to get into analog hardware synths for a long time - this was one of the most inspirational videos I’ve seen! And you answered the one thing I’ve been wondering myself: Can I sync these things to my DAW bpm, or will it for ever be a curiosity sitting on the sideline of my productions never being fully used because I really can’t play keys that well😄 So you just made my day sir, and my wife will not be happy with the money I’m gonna spend on one of these in the near future😆

DUDE!!!! A really LONG TIME AGO I had a Roland Juno 60. It was badass. Now I have a question: The "arpeggiator" ....will it sync-up (like you wanted it to do on ProTools) on Cubase Pro?

Honestly, I can’t speak to any other synthesizer, but I would imagine a significant amount of them that have USB would probably do the same thing. It’s a very hard thing to find out about different synthesizers, which is why it took me so long to pull the trigger on one. Sorry that’s no help at all. Lol.

[FYI, though, it's pronounced "Moog" as in BOAT or TOAD or GOAT.]
re: your issues with getting arpeggiator sync in the past-i'm not sure i understand. I thought it was always just about setting the synth to follow the DAW/sequencer clock.

@@ColtCapperrune I'm with you, but when I get synth guys in the studio or pianists in, the first thing they comment on all the time is the feel of the keys. Every. Single. Time. So I am always wondering how the keys feel and sound when played since so many people make comments when they are at my studio.
And I have a old Roland Rhodes mk-80 with real hammers and several controllers and no one is ever satisfied.

I love analog synths as much as the next guy, but the idea that software synths like omnisphere, arturia, serum, etc. “suck” or all of their presets suck is just bogus. Like everything in the studio, they are tools and will only be as good as the person using it. But I get it, it’s time to sell some Moogs.
