    Astounding. This guy knows that superglue is cyanoacrylate, knows that it's catalyzing withe the boric acid in borax... and yet doesn't understand how water balloons need to be full in order to pop.

    I wonder what Gallium does when mixed with superglue during its liquid state. Would the metal still melt? Or would it forever stay a solid? Maybe the King Of Random should try it.

    "Catalyzing" means dropping the activation energy required for a chemical reaction to happen faster. Every exergonic reaction happens spontaneously, but this doesn't mean they all happen fast. The polymerisation of cyanoacrylate without Borax happens in a few seconds to minutes if exposed to air (our standard super glue reaction). But if Borax is added, the polymerisation happens much faster (note: assumingly. Did you try it without Borax?), because the Borax reduces the activation energy of the polymerisation reaction. The Borax catalyzes (accelerates) the polymerisation (chain building) of the cyanoacrylate (hardened glue). If the Borax isn't being consumed in the process of the reaction, we can call the Borax a catalyst. But pls don't say "The superglue catalyzes immediately on contact with the boric acid" or "The super glue is catalyzing catastrophically and immediately with the Borax solution". Correct would be "The superglue polymerizes immediately on contact with the boric acid" and so on.

      ihavE noideafornamE first of all, great name! And second, that would be using the scientific method to determine the cause of the reaction, so yes that is exactly what they should do. Another thing that they should do is to glue several duplicate joints together and spray half of them with a borax solution to see if it will work as an accelerant to cure the glue deeper in the joint, or if it only works on the surface. By applying it to half of the joints, they could also determine how it affects the strength of the joints after all the joints are cured.

      David Scott it’s just going to harden instantly again but will actually hold instead of being brittle from being diluted.
      You can do the same and get better results with baking soda. I’m betting they only used borax to try and make the video idea seem unique, when it’s in fact just disguised as new by using the less common borax instead of baking soda.

    • @BJA717
      @BJA717 6 років тому +2

      My thoughts exactly. The chemistry behind why superglue works is that the hydroxide ions in water present in air catalyze the polymerization of the CA to form a hard resin. My guess is that this was actually the reaction with water and that borax had nothing to do with it.
      EDIT: So I just tried it. You see the same result in plain water (although it spreads out, but I imagine it's because I'm only using drop sized amounts that don't break the surface of the water, rather than spraying large streams into water). Which is frustrating cause my idea I posted in the last video was to put it directly in water like they did here.

    • @Blu3ManiC
      @Blu3ManiC 6 років тому +1

      Brady Anderson it’s mostly the borax, water only makes it harden slightly but won’t make it expand with gasses like borax, baking soda makes it harden almost instantly into a rock and is actually used in small aviation filling repairs

    • @yashwantjoshi2107
      @yashwantjoshi2107 6 років тому +9

      Because acetone is an acid and so the acetone burns the styrofoam and then turns it into liquid

    • @gecsus
      @gecsus 6 років тому +5

      If you put acetone on polypropylene it will melt it. Then you can put into a mold and it will solidify again into a new shape.

    • @xtreme1002003
      @xtreme1002003 6 років тому +30

      yashwant joshi No it’s not an acid- it’s a ketone. The reason why the styrofoam “melted” was it actually dissolved into solution because both styrofoam and liquid acetone are non-polar, making styrofoam soluble in it.

    • @xbankhead13x
      @xbankhead13x 6 років тому +5

      Masher Boats have engines right and that engine is powered by a component that has ignited fire . So it could be some type of emergency bag with borax that can handle heat on bottom of a emergency container with glue and when both reach their limited temperatures they can mix with each other after the mechanism for the emergency borax float is pulled
      I can’t really explain it but I know their is a way

    I'd swap in the word 'precipitate' for 'catalyze' for more nerdy chem points. Catalysts make a reaction easier/faster/more thorough but are not themselves involved in the final product. Precipitates are the solids that form in a reaction of liquids, or liquid that forms in a reaction of gases (clouds precipitate rainwater)!

      I would hardly call any of those dangerous ideas experiments. An experiment is a test to see if a hypothesis is true or not. If there is no hypothesis, it is not an experiment. You are just asking for a dangerous video. Super glue, or cyanoacrylate is highly flammable and produces toxic fumes.

      Likely just vaporized cyanoacrylate or water. There's no side products in this polymerization, but this is a pretty exothermic reaction so there's a bunch of heat evolved which could vaporize the unreacted monomer.

    • @amanawolf9166
      @amanawolf9166 6 років тому

      Actually, it's pretty interesting because you can mix Elmer's Glue and Super Glue to get a similar effect. Another thing that's quite weird is that you can put Super Glue on styrofoam, melt it, and then add Elmer's Glue to that mixture of styrofoam + Super Glue. You're definitely correct about the exothermic reaction since the reaction can get rather toasty.

    That does have an amazing resemblance to coral. I wonder how long it can hold up under water. IE: as a decoration in a fish tank. Will it break down after a time in regular water? Or, can a cast be made using the outline of the superglue+borax solution so that another material can be used to form a coral-like structure for decoration?

    • @wupme

      Sorry but using the instant cure sprays usually is the reason CA turns cloudy and white when curing.

      He already put dry ice in molten aluminum, which pretty much is the same thing (I guess). It didnt melt as fast because of the liedenfrost effect. That is when the dry ice slowly melts, creating a gas barrier between the ice itself and the molten aluminum, slowing the meltimg process.
