As someone who lives in Australia, I can safely say that all of these films are totally inaccurate when it comes to the levels of Zombies and killer Wild life.... but yeah I guess they don't have the budgets to show the real scope. Cecil: have you seen "Dead Calm"? Aussie psycho-thriller set on a stalled sailing boat in the middle of the ocean, starring a young Nicole Kidman. I would say it counts as a horror film. I was lucky enough to be a teen in the '80s and my high school showed it in the gym for a movie night. Looking at Australian society these days, that seems almost unbelievable!

    • @davesykes283
      @davesykes283 3 місяці тому

It's in no way a horror film. Billy Zane's best performance behind Demon Knight though. Sam Neill is good in it too.

@@davesykes283I would say it's definitely horror. The great thing about horror is how it can be so many things:
      Psychological Horror
      Drama Horror
      Suspense Horror
      Action Horror
It fits and doesn't fit into all of these, but definitely horrific situation playing out.

I can assure you that Black Water is very, very good. It's about a family (two sisters, one man engaged to one of them) who get trapped in mangrove trees with a large croc waiting for them to make a mistake. I watched the making-of on the disc and the team modeled their croc after multiple real ones to get the body looking how they wanted, and it's a realistic size instead of something utterly enormous so it feels more like one you'd actually run into.
The only real problem they had was when they were filming one scene and the ladies were screaming for help, and then everyone went to lunch and returned to find the cops had been called by the locals (they were filming nearby residential area) who thought someone was actually in danger.
I liked Rogue but I was hoping the ending would be a little more romantic (and the dog too), but otherwise a good film. Pretty sure I have Wyrmwood given by a coworker years ago, eventually I'll watch it.

For Canadians, Wyrmwood: Road of the Dead is on Tubi & Plex while the Apocalypse is on Paramount+. Rogue is not available for streaming at all in Canada, although there does appear to be an "unofficial" copy on UA-cam. The Reef is on Netflix, not Prime, but the sequel is the same.

It's generally accepted that the largest the species is likely to get to is 7m/23ft, and the one in Rogue was supposed to be "25ft", so I suppose we can just assume it was 7 meters they rounded up from 23 feet to 25 feet. (Of course the largest ones that have actually measured are actually between 6m and 6.5m; the 7m is more of an estimate)

Two recommendations from down here ... 'Primal' and 'The Tunnels.'
I loved the second choice as it plays like 'Blair Witch' but with a TV news crew doing a story, ending up stuck in the old train tunnels in Sydney.
Actually, call it a cross between 'C.H.U.D.' and 'Blair Witch.'
Bonus points to the casting agent who ended up hiring an actor to play the news cameraman, who formerly WAS a news cameraman!

I've been in all the tunnels and bunkers they used in The Tunnel and I tell ya what, they creatively made it way more confusing and labrynthine than they really are eh.
Most of the bunkers are small and only have a few rooms, the train tunnels are a long straight line of features with St James station in the middle of them.

I heard your opening and said that if Undead isn't on there, your list is incomplete. I love that flick. I saw it the first time it was on cable here in The States.
If I'm not mistaken, you (or another UA-camr) turned me onto the great Wyrmwood duology. Btw, as bonkers as 1 was, they ramped up the nutzo factor in 2.
Rogue is a banger that falls into that category of movies that come out alongside another similar movie. Dunno what the timeframe was, but it released close enough to Primeval for them to affect each other at the box office.
Good list. I think that I have even heard of the other 2. Sorry, but I love coming across bet-you-don't-know-about-these-movies list and being able to say aloud, "You are WRONG, mister!" (ala Ron "Tater Salad" White). One of them little pleasures in life. Thanks for that.

@@GoodBadFlicks Hope you don't mind me adding my own mini-review of Bloody Hell but (SPOILERS for those that haven't seen it):
Great movie! I was a little disappointed that there weren't supernatural elements to it. The posters and the descriptions on streaming sites said it was a "One Hell of a Fairy Tale". So I was expecting something more Fairy Tale-esque that would have some kind of real monster show up. Especially since the movie seemed to have heavy influence from Resident Evil 7, with its whole cannibalistic hillbilly family vibe.
I liked the duality of the character, that the voice in your head was more real and judging you. We all talk to ourselves, so seeing that brought into a visual form is both eerie and makes us question how much of them is us, and how much of us is them.
I did like the "Big Bad" at the end. It reminded me a LOT of the deformed man baby from the original Clock Tower on the SNES. Also I am fairly positive that the roar it gives is the same sound clip that was used in the kitchen scene from Black Sheep.

Aussie here. If you haven't seen it yet, you absolutely must watch 100 Bloody Acres, a very funny, very Australian, and very dark comedy. I recommend seeing it without spoilers, because it's one of those movies where every turn is a sharp left, and you will NOT predict where it ends up. It also has an excellent cast, including Angus Sampson from the Insidious series and Damon Herriman from No Activity. It also features a brief but memorable appearance from John Jarratt himself of Wolf Creek fame. I cannot recommend it highly enough.

Fun fact: 2007 had not one, not two, but FIVE (5) movies about killer crocodiles:
    -Primeval
    -Croc
    -Lake Placid II
    -Rogue
    -Black Water
And only the latter two were set in Australia. I get that if you have to have a killer crocodile movie you have to set it either there or in Florida, the Australia of America.

Blackwater is a fantastic movie, and I think it actually came out the same year as Rogue, so it makes for a great double bill.
Also it had a sequel Blackwater Abyss which is a solid entry into the croc/ali horror subgenre 🐊

When I first saw the title for this video, I didn't even consider that "Oz" might be referring to Australia. These look good too but now I'm craving Wizard of Oz horror, if anything like that even exists.

I remember discovering Rogue one day on TV. It was either Sy-Fy or AMC. But I remember it was one of those days where there wasn't a goddamn thing on TV!!! Literally nothing good not even reruns of Law & Order SVU which can usually hold you over.
I was pleasantly surprised by this movie. I didn't even know what it was about I don't think the info was working on my TV at the time. I just knew I recognized most of the main cast and then when the crocodile showed up I was like dude this is awesome😂

Absolutely adore me some Ozploitation action and this list has some great films (Have an urge to rewatch Rogue again … especially as it features the mighty John Jarrett) Was about to question where Razorback was until the poster popped up at the end … one of my personal favourites with stellar direction from Russell Mulcahy. I’d also have to include Patrick and Snap Shot, even Turkey Shoot though that’s less horror and more OTT action with questionable acting! And, of course, Dead End Drive In but again that’s not strictly horror … it’s still a superb film with an awesome soundtrack. And Roadgames, mustn’t forget that one … sublime!
