The city of Kozani is the capital of Western Macedonia and is located at an altitude of 720 meters above sea level. With a population of 149,733 inhabitants, as of the 2021 census, the prefecture is located at the crossroads between Central Macedonia, Epirus and Thessaly, and is the largest both in area and in population in Western Macedonia.
With its neoclassical buildings, its mansions, the coexistence of the modern with the classic and the Ottoman with the Christian, the city that stands proudly between three separate mountains, gives its visitors the opportunity to discover it gradually.
It is built between three separate mountains, the mountain ranges of Vermio, Burino and Pieria. Kozani is only 125 km from Thessaloniki, a distance that is covered by the new road axis of the Olympia Road in one hour from Thessaloniki and 5 hours from Athens, from which it is separated by 472 km.
The city and the region of Western Macedonia in general, is known for its contribution to the electricity of the country, and a large part of the population works in the steam-electric plants of D.E.H., which produce electricity with lignite as a raw material. Other products of the area are marbles, saffron, fruits, wines and various specialized crafts.
The area of Kozani is the only croco-growing area in our country, in some of its villages (Krokos, Karyditsa, Agia Paraskevi, Ano Komi, Kato Komi, Lefkopigi, Petrana, etc.) the plant has been systematically cultivated for many years. Every September in the area of Koila, Kozani, at the Exhibition Center of Western Macedonia, the trade fair takes place, where traders from Greece and other Balkan countries participate with local products.
Sights :
The Koventareios Municipal Library of Kozani is the second largest in Greece after that of Athens, and has 153,000 volumes, more than 380 manuscripts, 315 codices and many rare publications, including one of the 17 surviving originals of the Charter of Rigas Feraeus . For this reason, Kozani had joined the National Cultural Network of Cities with the object of promoting Books and Reading. This is how the Book and Reading Institute was established and Kozani was established as the City of the Book. The Institute ceased to exist after the implementation of the Kallikrates Law.
Victory Square is right in the center, as it hosts many of Kozani's neoclassical buildings, such as the listed Ermionion Hotel (built in 1931), the Town Hall and the branch of the National Bank of Greece.
A few minutes from the square is one of the most emblematic sights of the city, the metropolitan church of Agios Nikolaos, built in 1664, with its impressive bell tower. It is a three-aisled, arched royal style church and is the primary center of worship of the Kozanites.
Finally, just outside of Kozani, at a distance of 22 kilometers, is the archaeological site and the Archaeological Museum of Aianis. Ancient Aiani was the capital of one of the strongest kingdoms of Upper Macedonia. In the museum's collections you will see findings from the Late Bronze Age as well as exhibits from the archaic-classical period. Not far from Aiani, you can also visit the Museum of the Macedonian Struggle, in the village of Chromio. The village is located on Mount Vourinos (Bourinos) 32 kilometers away from Kozani.
Also, 27 kilometers southeast of Kozani is the artificial lake of the Polyfytos dam on the Aliakmonas river. The lake is crossed by one of the longest bridges in our country, the Serbian High Bridge, with a length of 1,372 meters.
