  • Thespies | The village of 700 unknown "kamikaze" of antiquity
Thespies was one of the most important Boeotian ancient cities in the valley of the river Thespios at the foot of Helikon. There are two versions for the name of the village: The first states that it was named after Thespios, son of the king of Athens, Erechthea, and the second version states that the name comes from the nymph Thespia, daughter of the river Asopus. An even older name for Thespians is "Rimokastro" or "Erimokastro" a name that is preserved to this day.
The Classical era is a period of prosperity for Thespies, which becomes the second largest city in Boeotia after Thebes, with a population of 13,000 inhabitants and shows significant political, religious and artistic activity.
The monument to Demophilus, which was placed by the benefactor of the village, Konstantinos D. Liakos-Kelepis, on his plot, at the SW entrance of Thespias, honoring as a minimum tribute the 700 Thespians for their heroic self-sacrifice in the battle of Thermopylae alongside the 300 Spartans.
Demophilus of Diadromos Thespieus was an ancient Greek who was a military leader at the Battle of Thermopylae. He was killed together with the other leader of the battle, King Leonidas, while the information that has survived about his person is minimal. He was the supreme commander of the 700 Thespians who stayed with the 300 Spartans at Thermopylae, in August 480 BC, when they were surrounded by the Persians.
Herodotus himself mentions the decision of the Thespian warriors, to voluntarily stay and die in Thermopylae together with King Leonidas and his men. Specifically, in his work on HISTORIES, in chapter H, paragraph 222, he states:
    In modern Greek:
The allies left obeying the orders of Leonidas, but only the Thespians and Thebans remained on the side of the Lacedaemonians. The Thebans "remained unheard" of them. The Thespians did not want to leave Leonidas and his companions alone. They remained, led by Demophilus the Wayfarer, and were sacrificed with them.
The reason that the king of Leonidas kept the Thebans with him was because they had "declared submission", i.e. they had declared submission to Xerxes, while he was afraid that if they let them go they might attack them together with the Persians. On the contrary, he kept the Thespians with him because they had distinguished themselves in the two previous days in battle, but also because, like the Lacedaemonians, they also descended from the demigod Heracles, according to their beliefs.
After the Battle of Thermopylae the Greeks placed epigrams for the dead of each city. For the Thespians, the epigram read: "Άνδρες τοι ποτ’ έναιον υπό κροτάφοις Ελικώνος, λήματα των αυχεί Θεσπιάς ευρύχορος." That is: "These men dwelt at the foot of Helicon, of whose valor the wide plain of the Thespis is proud."
For years the voluntary sacrifice of the Thespians was forgotten by the modern state. As recently as the Spring of 1997, a statue depicting a winged youth was erected, at the expense of the city hall of Sparta. The statue was erected next to the statue of the Spartan Leonidas and his companions at Thermopylae.
The monument is characterized by the following symbolism:
Headless male head : Anonymous voluntary contribution of the 700 Thespians for freedom.
Prolonged breasts : Struggle, prowess, strength, bravery courage.
Crushed Feather : Voluntary sacrifice and death.
Raised wing: Victory, glory, soul, spirit and freedom.
Naked body: Eros, who was God of Thespians, God of creation, beauty and life.
The stone plaque with the inscription: "Ὦ ξεῖν᾿, ἀγγέλλειν Λακεδαιμονίοις ὅτι τῇδε // κείμεθα τοῖς κείνων ῥήμασι πειθόμενοι".
"Oh, stranger passer-by, announce to the Lacedaemonians that we are buried here, obeying their commandments."
The hill of Kolonos in Thermopylae is a place of enormous historical importance since it was there that the last Spartan and Thespian soldiers resisted in 480 BC. King Leonidas along with Demophilus had died shortly before and on this hill the last resistance was lost under the hail of Persian arrows. Hundreds of arrows were found in excavations on the hill, some of which are now in the National Archaeological Museum of Athens. Ancient texts claim that after the passage of the Persians, the bodies of the Spartan-Thespians were buried on the hill.
The battle of Thermopylae is one of the most important battles in Greek and world history. Above all, from a moral point of view, he is a brilliant example of self-denial, self-sacrifice and obedience to the country.
