Pattern Testing A New Italian Gown | Aidah Gown Part 1
Вставка
- Опубліковано 3 жов 2024
- Hello Friends! Today we are pattern testing a new Italian gown for Scroop Patterns and Virgil's Fine Goods, the Aidah Gown! This is a beautiful Italian gown that has three different types of fronts (depending on if you go for a zone front with tabs or not) and two backs with some optional trains. I have decided to do the front from one view and the back from another and we will see about the train later! I am in the toile phase here, and so far, this pattern is looking very good, although very short waisted.
I will be making a few videos about this dress, a couple for the Toile and maybe a couple for the final gown, plus maybe one shorter, fast-build video of how this dress goes together.
If you liked this video, please give it a thumbs up and if you are new here, please subscribe and leave me a comment down below to introduce yourself!

I'm here for the long videos. I can come home, cook dinner, eat, and begin my own evening project listening to you.
Love love love the long form videos. Watch them while I'm sewing or sometimes just while lying on my sofa while my kids run around wild around me.
We are here for the ride - and will be your cheer section if you need!
💖💖
Every time I see your tattoo it takes my breath away. I love it so much
Awww thanks!
I am so glad I am NOT the only one with PROJECTS from last year! ITS OK!!! 🤗
Love watching all, and i'm glad that word appeared in the email to reduce your stress levels. I've had times when I've done that, where words appear or disappear randomly within things I've read multiple times that can't have changed.
I also also have the brain that says 'finish all the things now! before you stop!' so I get that, too.
I watched while taping together patterns that I need to grade for a friend who needs a larger size than they come in. I successfully did one grade project of a peplum top so now I'm doing two tops with raglan sleeves (one is a tee and the other is a peasant top), so...wish me luck with those. I also found out that cotton gauze is a bit frustrating to work with, takes a bit more time and care, but is lovely and squishy in the end.
I have several books that I haven't read yet that I've bought through the audible people. I've been listening through a series that I had several books of (Wicked Witches of the Midwest by Amanda M Lee), then I'm debating listening through the series for the books I have...One is the 8th book in the series, (Posthumous Education, part of the Fred, the Vampire Accountant series by Drew Hayes) the next are box sets...omnibuses...3 packs...the 3rd and 4th of their series (Avery Shaw and Mystic Caravan series by Amanda M Lee respectively. I greatly appreciate authors who do that [Amanda M Lee does that with all of her series, I think, which I appreciate]).
Take care of yourself and have fun!
I like the long videos because I get out my own sewing and sew along with you, I've even been known to talk to you and answer you back when you ask questions. I'm not a big fan of the short videos, but I do understand how they can be useful. That being said, whatever you make, I will watch. Sorry for your loss, and I'm glad you're doing better, please remember to take care of yourself and don't over do it.
Do the videos however works best for you. I’ll watch them no matter if they are long or short. 😊
I do indeed like the long-form weekly vlogs, but am also looking forward to the upcoming short-form videos. The dress is looking great!
Yay! Thank you!
I'm gearing up for "F-It February" (finish it, fix it or frog it) for my knitting unfinished objects(UFOs).
I do enjoy your long content, I'm happy to watch whatever you put out.
Oh my gosh, I have just finally started working on an 18th century outfit for myself, starting with embroidering my pockets, and then I'll make my cap! So I was PUMPED to see this video pop up!!!!
Holy crap, so much basting 0_0. But kind of satisfying to see. I like that your fabric is a dark brown, I feel like it's an oft neglected color, but so charming. Thanks for keeping me company late at night, honestly just hearing you chat was reminding me of all the times you've talked about setting compassionate goals and literally let me allow myself to ease off some of my own relentless sewing schedule and practice self-mercy. Appreciate it!
Oh thank you!
I love watching y'all's videos and hearing your thoughts on how to do things you and Rachel, Abby, and Nicole have helped me with my sewing and it's gotten so much better! Thank you for all you do!
So glad!
I like that video plan of both long vlog style and shorter VO project videos. I’m here for the long form content personally.
Have fun on your trip to Disney. I, too, am on the same wave length as young children and it is so much fun!
I do enjoy the shorter content for learning stuff, but the longer form content is what I listen to when I’m working in my shop. So…yeah, I like your plans lol.
Great to hear!
Cutting then taping is a revelation. I used to do it backwards...what a waste of tape!! Thanks for the suggestion. So nice to see you!
Very nice looking and lovely fabric
Looks like the whole skirt pleating was pad stitched! Whatever you decide to do please base it on remaining healthy and stressless as possible, I will watch them all. Cheers and good health to you.
I very much enjoyed the peak into pattern testing.
Love the material you're making that dress with. I'm reading some books by A.G. Riddle, I keep thinking of him as A griddle. some interesting reading, you might enjoy his "long winter" trilogy. Enjoy Disney. ZenHugs!
Meanwhile, I **just** finished my first , extremely simple, from-a-pattern shirt ever today, lol! I suppose I have to start somewhere? "Just do the thing."
Yay finished!!
That will be a beautiful dress! I am working on my first Victorian corset (Laughing Moon Dore) for an 1890s outfit and bingeing all of "Due South" - a Canadian buddy cop show from the 1990s about an excessively polite Mountie from northern Canada who moves to Chicago to investigate his father's murder. It's hilarious (despite the murder investigation) and a good comfort watch.
Oooo good luck with your corset!
I like seeing/hearing your trouble shooting in your videos... maybe not fun for you but helps me persevere through the challenging parts of fitting!😊
All content from you is good content! Love you!
Long videos a must I love them. Love your personality you're cute.🌹
Thank you so much!!
Enjoyed sewing with you, love the print on your fabric!
To the end. Make whatever works for you & your life. Currently making Regency stays. An Elizabethan kirtle is next on the list for the Renaissance Pleasure Faire. Totally jealous of your trip to Disney. February is my birth month, so there are a bunch of things happening. Will be diving into more Interview with a Vampire and Mayfair Witches.
Ooo that sounds like fun!
Me: I don't really have an hour to watch a video right now.
Also me: Yay Noelle posted another long video I need to watch it now. 😁
💖💖💖
I love long videos.
Love the long form content!
I love the project videos and the short form vlogs, so you do what works best for you and how your brain and heart work!! My January has been good and bad. Bad...I got a stereoscopic breast cancer biopsy..it hurts like a bitch. The good is no cancer, some wonky stuff but not cancer, so I can live with that. I have my cool loving garden plants started and some tomatoes because I can grow them inside if I want... I am planning out my 2023 garden, with corn, pl pumpkins, tomatoes, onion, zucchini, yellow squash, egg plant, peppers, artichokes, all kinds a herbs, and flowers everywhere. I cant wait!!
That garden sounds awesome!!
@@Costuming_Drama thanks
I love whatever you want to create!
I'm down for whatever 😅, your workroom buddy. I just put on whatever the next video is and let it roll. Thank you for sharing ❤
Awesome! Thank you!
I’m here for all the content!
First of all, I’m so sorry for your loss. May his memory be forever a blessing.
Secondly totally here to hangout and cheer!
Thank you so much 💖 he was 96 and ready, so we were all very happy to have him go be with my great aunt again.
i like the long form
Hey Noelle, love the weekly vlogs. Very excited about this dress pattern. I love the Italian gown in general it's such a very style.
In my opinion, all your content is good content! I enjoy it all. I am finishing sewing a very pink dress for a 4 year old. It is going very slow, and I want to be done with sewing for a while after that. I enjoy learning from your videos, though!
I was clapping above my head for you. I was feeling the progress you were getting through and it felt great. yay for progress! Also, love the fabric you are working with. It looks absolutely gorgeous! The basting...yikes! You did that! How awesome.
I'm going through some things at the moment, but this video made me forget for a while since I was watching you breeze through things. Ugh, I want to breeze though things. It's not going to be for right now, but I am so happy to see you do it. Breeze on!
HUGS. I’m sorry that you are going through things right now and I hope they pass quickly.
I’m here for all the content ❤
I really loved the video style and find the project really interesting.
I support whatever video form is best for your mental & physical health.
I'm totally here for the ride :) I started cutting for my first ever make of a Chemise and Skirt! I purchased Alter Years patterns back in the 1990's from Ren Fair. I am still crocheting and learning my new Addi Knitting machine.
That is awesome!
My first thought on the "very high rump" was "But you can slouch!", before I realised that will solve 0% of the problem, hehe ^^;
I'm really glad that you split it into 2 parts as the fun is spread out over a longer period and as a viewer, I actually get to have a while walking around and looking forward to daydream and wonder how it will end, before seeing the video.
I'm so impressed with your work!
Thank you so much!
I enjoy watching your videos. So, whatever you want to post is fine.
I am especially liking this pattern test.
Thank you so much!
oooh can't wait to see the finished dress
I can totally relate to over committing. I always end up working against a deadline when I sew. I seem to get things done better with a deadline. Thanks for sharing your process
I am SO in for the ride 😍 Please don't forget to breathe! ❤️
I love the dark brown and pale cloth you used. It is, to my eye, terribly beautiful. I am mostly here for the ride. It is a grand ride.
Thank you so much!
I will (& do) watch anything you put out!
💖💖
You do you and we will watch
Busy, busy. The Aidah gown looks great. I like how you're mixing the back and front of the two views. I'll have to rewatch the video though because the pain reliiever I took to ease pain in my arm put me to sleep and I missed part of the vlog and the arm still hurts! I'm looking forward to seeing how all your plans and sewing progress. Again, good luck with the job hunt.
I hope your arm feels better soon!
I love the idea of weekly vlogs. I always get excited when I see you've uploaded. This January, we got my toddler potty trained. Yay!
Your color choice is beautiful on you!!!💚💚💚
I really enjoyed watching your thought process whole pattern testing & making mirs for a friend. Keep doing awesome things
think you'll have a lot of fun with the project, dandy video love
I like your pattern assembly method! I might try that (I tend to put all the horizontal strips together, then put the individual pattern pieces together from that).
Love the dress, and I'd love that toil fabric as a main fabric, so can't wait to see which silk you choose! Happy to go with short and/or long form content- I like seeing/hearing your process and the problem-solving as you go along :)
Currently trying my hand at draping as I just finished padding out Manny (my mannequin- I know, imaginative, right?!) to my actual proportions, so hopefully I should have a nice princess-seamed dress that I can wear some time in the next few days (weeks....months....?!)
Also, thank you so much for the Frixxon pen recommendation- they're really darned useful! :D
I like the idea of the two different forms of videos. The longer weekly and the short form project. Best of both worlds!
I'm currently watching the Miss Fisher Mysteries series. Her costumes are delicious!
That show is delightfu
I like seeing you figure things out and hearing you talk your way through a process. It's sort of like watching Adam Savage's build vids. This is a really interesting project. I'd not given much thought to the whole process of developing a sewing pattern and sending it out for testing, so this is another thing I get to learn about, from the sewist's side. Pretty neat!
I enjoy whatever you post! I do like the dress diary concept, it will give us a more concentrated version of the project, which could be very helpful and interesting. Hope you had fun at Disneyland, 100th Anniversary, woohoo! 🎉
I'm sticking together 2 pdf patterns because none of the print shops in my area print A0 in a light enough paper, gone try cutting the pieces as I go a bit for the second one. I did my first ever pattern testing for Ora Lin at the end of December and it was really fun, would definitely do again
What an incredible video. I am floored...so good. And I am excited for what's next. Looks amazing! I think any type of video, long or short form would be amazing. 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👍🏽😃j
Thanks for being awesome, as always!
Short video is good but hearing the reasoning for the tweeks you make to the pattern to fit your body better helps to fit patterns to me. Being able to fix a pattern to fit my actual measurements not thier standard sizes is cool.
Yes but it’s not an either/or thing! It’s both…
Gigi is being elevated to a Pelican?!? So deserved! I am so happy to hear this and welcome her into Order!
Genuinely love your videos for the amount of relatable "oh... I read that wrong. Oops..." and other moments. Makes me feel like less of a mess when I do the same and that we all have our moments - even someone as experienced and talented as you. Your videos frequently join me in my own sewing sessions in the background and I even watch them through more times just to boost how much revenue is earned via view counts to help support you. Love your stuff, keep creating and we will keep supporting! ❤️
Thank you very much! 💖
Sorry about your loss. Glad to be back to it. I miss having you around.
Thank you 💖
Can I just say that I love hearing scissors and sewing machine more than I like the music over it?
You don't have to apologize for not making a dress in a week! Especially if you're doing all that lovely basting! I really enjoyed this vlog and I would love to see weekly videos even if the project is not finished and the content is not polished to perfection.
Oh thank you!
I’m jumping into my first attempt at long stays to go under a regency gown. “The girls” will not allow for short stays. I’m working up to an Edwardian gown and a full Victorian ensemble. I currently do a lot of vintage 40/50’s and have someone who wants to do photo shoot. I’m so excited. I’m from STL and would love to have pictures taken at Forest Park where the 1904 Worlds Fair was held.
It was cool seeing you at 12th Night. It took all of my willpower not to fangirl. Gigi looked amazing! Thanks for the sleeve "hack" It solves a problem with a coat I am working on.
Hahahaha well thank you 💖 I’m just a chick with a camera! Same as everyone else! It was lovely to meet you as well!
I enjoy all videos on this channel. If I had to choose I would go for long form, but it is the creator's choice. I am interested in hearing more about the Chicago ball, its history, past gowns worn, accessories people use, whatever works for this channel.
It’s the first one!! 😂
This was a nice video to knit along with. I am glad it turned out that you could relax about finishing.
When I need to lengthen or shorten a pattern I usually slash it across the centre and adjust it that way. It is much easier then trying to adjust curves, which I invariably mess up.
Yes I usually do that too, but in this case I needed to actually change the curve somewhat…
I’m pattern testing this too! I can’t wait to see yours!
Is yours super short waisted also?
I actually had to shorten it, but I’m not sure if that’s because I also had to grade down the waist about 3 sizes.🤷🏻♀️
Oh wow!!
Oh my Goodness! Now why didn't I think of tiling that way!!??! Thanks so much for sharing, Nicole. I find that by the middle/end of tiling it ends up skewed and then I am cutting things out separately to fix. I am absolutely going to borrow your method next time. Thanks for Sharing!💯
Definitely going to try out the cut then tape method especially for those large awkward shapes. Trying to cut a floppy giant piece of paper is a challenge
Totally using you as a body double while I sew my own thing! Hand sewing a foldable pouch that I patterned myself so I can hold a small notebook and multiple pens and pencils plus random things in it and they'll stay together in my bag!
I'm so glad to see you back! I truly enjoy spending time with you & seeing what's going to happen from making projects to getting a vicarious vacation. Including peeks of your awesome ink!
Thank you so much!
You might find a light box helpful to jigsaw your pattern pieces together. The light coming through the paper will let you perfectly align and tape the pieces before you cut. I've used this method since the 1970s to up size patterns from books for theatre costumes.
Thank you for taking us on this journey with you. Hopefully it isn't too stressful. Good luck with the job search.
Thank you so much!
I was trying to hit the comment button and my phone tweaked bc of an add that popped up and it clicked the thumbs down instead. This was very much a thumbs up video, so please ignore the tech glitch. I love the long form but look forward to the shorter form stuff. It will make great reference material and also I think you teach well. Glad you turned out to have more time than you thought. Looking forward also to the second half. Very pretty fabric for a wearable toile. Also can't wait to see the fabric for the final gown. :)
You can just click it again or click the thumbs up and it will take the thumbs down off!
Hurray, Noelle is here!🎉 I love every content you make, whether it’s long or short(er)😊 just finished two beautiful 1949’s jackets in Harris tweed, or tailleurs, as the French called them. One in blackbrown 🤎🖤 and the other in bright pink! 💓 very pleased with them😇
Ooo those sound awesome!
I would love to recommend Plotted Pattern for pattern printing. She does a fantastic job printing the huge sheets and she will do the instructions bound too if you'd like that. I get mine printed booklet style when my instructions aren't huge. :)
Thanks for the tip!
I'm jsut here for whatever videos you post! I learn so much from your vlogs, and it's so encouraging to watch you work on your projects! (I also got the giggles everytime you said "release the pleats" because all I could hear was Davy Jones releasing the kraken)
SAME
Lol me too. But also remember releasing the kitten after our older cat eat. Kitten was referred to as the kraken among other things. He’d run down like a rocket and remove any tiny bit of flavour in the bowl!
I can’t wait to see your pretty housemaid. Please do the long format for that I’m working on a pattern for that & putting it on hold until then. We are so close in measurements I think it will definitely help to see someone do one our size.
Nono, I’m going to do BOTH for everything. It’s not an either/or.
I loved this video. Can’t wait to see more, more, more!
I think this is a good idea for long term views if you go back and have an edited ‚How to sew pattern A, size x and the adjustments for body type x‘
We can enjoy the feeling of understanding the journey of you talking about your project and thought process, share in your successes and learn from failures in the monthly vlogs, but if someone was to search for a particular pattern construction years later your shorter video will probably be easier to find through search results.
I think it will probably also be nice to have a sort of ‚Modelbook‘ for all the projects you finished…in Videoformat.. very satisfying.
This dress is looking great! Can't wait to see the finished product. Hope you had fun at Disney Land!
Thanks! It was great!
Hi Noelle! I really like the longer videos because you inevitably share a tip or trick as you're going along. I tend to either knit or hand-sew something small, so you help me focus and make progress.
I've been sewing a while, but still consider myself a beginner because my experience is in a few kinds of items, but a lot of them. From watching you and several others I've expanded my tools & notions kit. Frixion pens are magic. Such a game changer.
I'm so sorry for your loss.
Thank you very much 💖
It was nice chatting with you after Gigi's elevation! Looking forward to both types of content. Have fun at Disney!
You too!! And thank you!
Such a helpful video to see your growth as a costumer! Well I’m planning and patterning the breakup robe from This Flag Means Death. Art imitates life?!? Im also Kondo’ing my personal library. And I work-work from home. So it’s chaos in here. And generally struggling with depression and wanting to stay in bed. But I continue! I’m enjoying my robe process. Same as with work, worrying about the next step of the process is useless and often becomes moot I settle down and just do the next thing. But for the moment, I am going to the gym!
Props for going to the gym and I hear you on just wanting to stay in bed. I’m proud of you for managing it anyway! 💖
I like your long content! I also like your shorter content! lol! I like it all!
It's Oscar season, so I'm watching all the movies till March 12! 17 movies to get through in the top 6 categories. (Best Picture/Director/Actress/Actor/Supporting Actor/Supporting Actress) So far 'Everything Everywhere All At Once' is hands down my favourite! Highly recommend!
That’s hands down the best movie I have seen in a LONG time!
@@Costuming_Drama I think/hope it'll take best picture so more people watch it!! Also, it deserves to win!
I’m HERE for the Stream of Consciousness content!
After your last video, I did keep wondering when you were going to cut things off “to be continued”
This is definitely a shift for you, 😊 but I think we’ll all benefit from the example of “This is what I’m accomplishing”, rather than “Here’s a finished thing” as a mentality
🙌
For making sure that pattern pieces are connected correctly, I would use letters or numbers. Just just doodle a big A on each side of the first join, a B for the next, and so on. But I'm also ADHD so if I didn't give myself a billion reminders things would absolutely get messed up.
I really love long whole project videos. So much nowadays seems geared to people with short attention spans it is a delight to find a video like this.
I always get excited when seeing a new video notification on your channel one of the many things i look forward is scenes with the work board. i just love that idea, i keep telling myself i need to get a board for my wall to keep a list of sewing to do projects but never do and i seriously need to because it's helpful and keeps track on things. I'm the same when it comes to basting too.
The board helps me keep my sanity!
I really love your long vlog style videos, so Im glad you plan to keep them! But the shorter project videos sound quite interesting too, especially for people who want to make the same pattern and like to watch those videos to see how it works and what worked for other people. So if it works for you - both sounds great, if not I personally would prefer the longer videos xD
Marking the notches on the fabric is a super smart idea! I always forget to snip them so I'll give that a try. Thanks for another great video that was a welcome distraction while I'm under the weather. Good luck with the rest of the process and all your other projects to come! 😁
💖
