@@Costuming_Drama I’m feeling frustrated because I can’t add a comment to the general conversation so I am adding it here…it looks AMAZING! The colour is fantastic, it has a wonderful amount of swoosh and it is really flattering. Excellent result 😊
Hilarious that you're terrified by the idea of a shirt while the rest of us gawp at your creations in awe! Loved this concept so I decided to join the fun. I'm almost finished my shirtdress. It's made from a collection of my son's discarded shirts. I'm so happy with it. Very casual and relaxed fit but feels crisp and feminine. Btw, I'm an Australian size 20; definitely plus size. The key for me was a higher waistline so that the skirt falls from that point and skims over everything.
👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 It looks wonderful on you! I was always taught buttonhole spacing didn’t matter as much as making sure one button lined up with the full bust line to prevent gapping for us full busted types.
I have recently purchased dress blouses that have a button sewn facing in at the bustline. It's nice that it doesn't show but it still prevents the dreaded gaping.😊
@@lajoyous1568I used to work in clothing retail, and it’s a very common practice for a lot of the middle and higher quality women’s dress shirts to have hidden buttons at the bust line to prevent gaping. Sold a lot of blouses to women looking for business attire, and they were always so pleased with this.
So desperately sad that this fun idea came from bullying. A brilliant way to deal with an unnecessarily nasty situation. I love shirt dresses. They do not love me back. I do not have great ankles and every shirt dresses I have tried looks pretty awful. I now wear short shirt dresses as a tunic with leggings or trousers underneath. I find jeans a bit bulky. ❤
I must admit that I was questioning the black/pink and was really hoping that you were going to show the other fabric. But the dress came out beautiful! I would I think it would look so sharp just with the top. Well, add a little length to waist! I really enjoyed the mock-up showing the fit of the top. Great job!
I’ve never tried a shirt dress as I’m plus sized and assumed they wouldn’t look good on me…. I’m second guessing it now after seeing yours! I think it looks fantastic on you!!
Your dress is beautiful on you. Whether or not something fits depends on the cut, the fabric and how it is made. I think this is the perfect fit for you and you executed it magnificently.
Very cute! I am going to have to add this pattern to my “to-make” list. I can imagine it working well in multiple fabrics for different seasons. A light weight linen for summer would probably be so comfortable.
I love it. The dress is lovely and looks great on you! I had heard about shirtwaist September but not why it was started. It’s so crazy how many people think that they can just destroy others joy! I’ve seen some of the others dresses and think they all look wonderful on everyone!! If you make the other one I you will show it off!
Well that's a stunning dress 🤩 Pink and black is a great contrast. I'd love to see the plaid as well 😄 I haven't had a shirt dress in years but you've convinced me to make one. I did make a flannel button up mens style dress shirt before with a total cheat pattern ( I took apart a shirt that fit just right but was on its last leg) I had to guess what to sew first and didn't even think about interfacing.😂 In the end it came out really well for a first try at a garment with sleeves and buttons. Although the sleeves did shrink up a bit after a few washes in spite of the prewash.
In the 80s, my parents had some friends who could have been models for "The Preppy Handbook," and this shirt dress looks 100% like something the (very stylish, very chic) wife of the couple would wear. I love the pink and the plaid and everything!
You always make sewing projects look so easy. Your instincts of using the interfacing, imo, were right on target, as of course, I told the screen while watching you. Your shirt dress looks really good. Agree that belt loops should be added. And, I'd change the closure of the belt from tie to a slip buckle and then tuck the slipped end into a loop on the dress to help keep it in place. I think the plaid flannel you have will make up in this pattern really well too. You might consider making the hood detachable to give the second dress a little more flexibility. You could put buttons or snaps on the inside of the collar with the buttonholes or other snap end on the outside of the hood. Look forward to seeing it when you make it! Please give your cats some extra pats!
Love this dress. I have seen that button placket trick before, but never tried it. (make the other dress, too, please.) So, update. I can walk again. It's just a matter of time building muscles. Importantly, we found that the constant pain I'm feeling is not from my feet, but my back. Yeah, back! And, I, too, am doing Shirtwaist September. I have a shirt dress that was given to me years ago that is WAY too long in the torso. It has been living in The Pile TM, and I thought that this is the perfect excuse to get it trimmed and re-fitted. I have several vintage patterns for shirtwaist dresses, but right now, I'm making a chemise a la reine and French jumps for a couple of my daughters, and the re-fit is all I will have time for.
Noelle, I love how the shirt dress looks on you! It’s fabulous! I love your kindness and courage! Thank you for setting such a good example for how to treat others online ❤❤❤
This dress looks great on you and seems super comfortable. Thanks for keeping me company while I baste all the hemmy bits on my wool cassock before I put in the lining.
You look great! And, yes, make a bunch of them! When you tried the muslin on, the effect was already stunning despite the needed adjustments....A solid version would be amazing too....I live in shirtdresses, they combine elegance and comfort and you can choose lots of fun patterns for the fabric!
Thank you! I actually love the bright yellow solid one in their promo for it, so I may do that someday, although I have no idea if yellow looks good on me!

I’m glad to see this all laid out and hopefully put to rest at some point.

This looks great on you and I really want to make one myself! Currently watching you with a sleep deprived brain and a sick baby and we both find you very soothing
If you wish to fold the button placket to the outside you will need to use something like a French seam or a flat felled seam to connect the skirt to the bodice. However, that would require the two pieces of fabric to have the same length (so not gathers on the skirt).
I love that dress! It looks great and tempts me to try making one. I have some flannel I adore and think this dress would be amazing. It could be a dress or a jacket...love the idea.

Agree; buying interfacing in bulk makes so much sense! I buy mine by the 5 metre length :) Last time I made a new shirt pattern, looked up how to do a full bicep adjustment, and was VERY glad I did (the sleeve had been described as "modern, slim & sleek"... er no).

That is SO super cute on you!!!! Kudos! I was a bit skeptical about the dart area, it looked like the muslin needed a larger dart, but the dress looks really cute in that area as well as overall. It's a "buffalo plaid/check, btw. Also, I loved hearing your explanation as to why you were making the dress in the first place. Really neat. OH! One question? If I may. Were you referring to that TOL Janome when you did the first set of buttonholes?
I totally was! Although, to be fair, I got it 4 years ago, like a million projects and have never had it serviced. As soon as I do that, those buttonhole will be beautiful again. I’m just waiting to service it until I have a regular paycheck again!
STUNNING! Looks fantastic and I really do need to learn the French seams on pockets and seams thing; I tend to flat fell them. But I’m now keen to try that. I do have a theory on how pockets themselves could be French seamed… 🤔 When it comes to the blind hem stitch, being the recently medically retired nurse that I am, I remember it as the one that looks most like an ECG trace on a monitor 😂
Yay, Noelle! Hello! The dress looks amazing and fits you great! I love the idea, I am immediately tempted to use an existing shirt and add a skirt to it :D The biggest skirt possible, of course, although double circle sounds like a lot :D

@@Costuming_Drama Got it. Thanks.
Do you always use the whiteboard on projects? Does it help you stay focused?
YES AND YES!
STUNNING! Looks fantastic and I really do need to learn the French seams on pockets and seams thing; I tend to flat fell them. But I’m now keen to try that. I do have a theory on how pockets themselves could be French seamed… 🤔
When it comes to the blind hem stitch, being the recently medically retired nurse that I am, I remember it as the one that looks most like an ECG trace on a monitor 😂
Oh the method I used did French seam the pockets as well! Check out kittenish behavior on YT for her tutorial!
@@Costuming_Drama I shall indeed! Thank you
Yay, Noelle! Hello!
The dress looks amazing and fits you great! I love the idea, I am immediately tempted to use an existing shirt and add a skirt to it :D The biggest skirt possible, of course, although double circle sounds like a lot :D
Great idea!! Do it!!
