    Firefly was lucky to be born at all but the reason it was canceled and the movie sabotaged was because extreme incompetence and a very stubborn director.

      I don't think they missed, I say it's the best they could do with what they got. To try to tie up everything in a two hour movie wasn't going to happen. You have back stories missed on the crew, reavers, the alliance, independents, the killers hunting River, blue sun's, organize crime factions, working class civilians, wealthy citizens, slaves, the old earth and how and who used it up and on and on. I wish for all this and more the lore is so massive, but happy with what I got. Maybe a streeming service will reboot it and have more success. Then the crazies questions of all are who plays are favorite crew lol, just my opinion.

      While i only "heard' of the show after cancellation, I actually bought the DVD on a whim.....Then I forgot about it....So one night I was digging through my DVDS and I found Serenity....I watched it and was amazed how good the movie was. While there was some lacking in back stories, I thoroughly enjoyed all the characters. The actors I recognized were in different TV shows and movies made the movie much better, I still watch the movie several times a year...4-8 times...I'd wish for another movie....and hope for it.

And if you’ve read the books, you know George has always been more about the surprise twist than staying true to the characters as written. Thankfully, Ty Franck, one half of James S. A. Corey who wrote The Expanse books, (and is GRRM’s former assistant), and his writing partner Daniel Abraham, are not married to The Twist, and so far, their characters have stayed true to themselves & circumstances. Sure, D&D&B had to cut all the red herring plot lines for budget and story purposes, and I personally, considering I work in the industry and know how things get done (or in most cases don’t), worked miracles with those bookies, especially the hot mess books 4 & 5 turned into because George doubled the cast both times to distract from everyone figuring out who Jon Snow was because he put that info in the first book, and that they were only going off of George’s outline for books 6 & 7 (which I don’t believe we’ll ever see.) If you’ve not watched the Expanse, do so. But be patient. There are three sets of characters that need to be established before they can converge, which takes a bit of time. But it’s as good as Firefly and BSG when it finally reaches the top of the roller coaster and turns into TV Crack. 🤓

      @@talismanb6449 If I would name one strength of Martin's writing is that he stays true to his character's personalities even with his twists - something I can't sadly say about the TV series after it had no source material left. And yes: The books 4 & 5 needed a rework for the series - but I wouldn't consider it a miracle with things like the Dorne storyline (if you don't want it in simply don't use it!) or the events around Arya. And no: Even Martin himself seems to have no clear idea in mind how the book series will end (besides that there will be a King Bran) so I think it has more to do with the issue that the showrunners needed to improvise on a vague outline.

      @@ThePopcast It wasn't just on Fridays, they were cancelling new shows left and right every day of the week. I've always felt that Fox got spoiled with the success of The Simpsons and X-Files and that any show that didn't hit those kinds of numbers right off the bat were canceled. They didn't want to take the time to let their shows find their legs and audience, they just wanted instant hits.

    • @impactfoto

      @@ThePopcast I really don't understand the thinking behind a lot of what the networks do. Do you remember the show 'Flash Forward', which I think was on NBC maybe 10 years ago? Lately a lot of shows are splitting up their seasons... show the first half several weeks in a row, and then come back 3 or 4 months later and finish the season. "Join us in February, and find out what happens"... yeah right. They get away with it when a show is a runaway hit like The Walking Dead, but with a lot of shows it kills their momentum and they never recover. Flash Forward had an interesting premise and a great cast, but it never recovered its ratings after the 'break', and they canceled it after the first season ended on a cliffhanger. Super frustrating when you get all invested in a show, and then it gets canceled because of their ineptitude.

      @@Riceball01 Yep. I think that was _exactly_ their problem. I've always thought that if I were a creator with a show to bring to audiences, I would get down on my knees and pray to the gods of television that my series got bought by _any_ other network than Fox, because if they get it, and it doesn't take off like a rocket, it's doomed. Even when they didn't cancel shows outright after the first season, like they did with Firefly (or John Doe, another really interesting series they axed after I'd gotten invested in the story), then in pursuit of those magic numbers, they invariably meddled with the shows in ways that made the second season worse and killed any chance of success, like with Dark Angel or Human Target, for example.

    My experience was different from what this video claims. I had never heard of Firefly but saw Serenity in theaters with a friend and loved it. Then I found out it was from a cancelled show and sought out the show (and loved that too). There were a couple oddities in the film if you hadn't seen the shows but it wasn't a big deal (it just alluded to there being more but it wasn't necessary to the plot at hand). I don't think TV and film needs to hold the viewer's hands and explicitly spell out everything. The character deaths were powerful even though I hadn't seen the series and made me wonder who - if any - were going to survive the final battle (but I wanted them to make it because the film developed enough of their character to build that attachment).

    • @Adama85
      @Adama85 2 роки тому +2

      I had a similar experience. I had no idea about the show and my friends ended up taking me to what must've been a pre- screening in May 2005, because that's I remember seeing the movie. After watching I saw reruns on sci-fi that summer, I decided that I needed to see the whole show. I finally found it on DVD in December of 2005 and watched it all. After that, I was hooked. I bought all kinds of merchandise and comics that continue the story. I even bought books about the show written by both fans and industry professionals. Firefly is a perfectly put together show and it's sad what happened to it, due to the meddling of people in charge who didn't know how to handle it. That's why Firefly is so special to fans; we love all of it for what it is, not what it can be. Also, we consume every tangible piece of material about it because we know that it could stop at any moment. I could forget everything else I've ever watched or read but Firefly and Serenity will stay in my heart forever. All of this is coming from a dude who was 19 when he saw the movie in theaters back in 05, it's THAT powerful.

    • @criag61
      @criag61 2 роки тому +2

      My experience was different too. I had never heard of Firefly (now pretty much my favourite show ever), as it was on pay tv in Australia. I got sent to review Serenity and was mildly curious why the screening room, which seated about 40 people, was so full it had people sitting on the steps. I'd never seen that before. I was also confused why some were so upset when a character died. Yes, it was sad, but they seemed to have this huge attachment to the character, which didn't make all that much sense to me. I thought maybe they were just really sensitive. It was only after watching the series and falling in love with it that I got it. My big regret is seeing the movie before the series, because although entertaining on its own, it is the culmination of story-arcs, for River, in particular, and is quite a spoiler. It takes away all the mystery building up about her in the tv series. To the newcomer, Inara and Book also just seem like convenient new characters thrown up from nowhere.

    • @hamburgerdog25

      I'm a newer fan as of a few months ago. I had already heard a lot of Firely but I think the first time I had heard of it was within the fanbase of the video games Destiny and Destiny 2, because Nathan Fillion (Malcolm Reynolds) and Gina Torres (Zoe Washburn) star in those games as two of the main characters that sort of work with and guide the player. If you don't know anything about it you should really see the Cayde-6 promos for those games. Cayde being the character portrayed by Nathan. So I finally picked up the show on Hulu and I was instantly in love with it. After I finished it I went around the Firefly fanbase mostly on youtube and I came across this reccurring mentioning a movie called Serenity. So I naturally assumed they were talking about the first episode of the show, Serenity, which was something like and hour and half long (about the typical length of a movie). Then I saw those comments talking about things I hadn't seen in the show. Fast forward a few Google searches later and I now find out there is a movie called Serenity as well. I was lucky enough to catch it on Peacock before it fell of the face of the streaming world. I mean its still availble to rent or buy but I'm not the one with money for renting or buying, so. And then fast all the way forward to our last free comicbook day as I'm strolling around one of my local comic shops when I stumble upon a book with a very familiar cover. Turns out that not only are they running a Firefly comic series right now, but they've done multiple series' for the past 17 or so years. They have runs about times before the movie, after the movie, Shepherd Book's story, they even have a story about Malcolm's mother, The Outlaw Ma Reynolds. I would heavily suggest catching up on those if you can

      I think they did, and realised it after they bought the first package. Firefly is an Asa Carter style story (Outlaw Josey Wales...), Jesse James, and The Undefeated. It was a neo-Confederate metaphor.
      That can make some great conflict and story telling, but after 1965, Hollywood mostly rejected those scripts on TV and after 1975 in movies.
      The Union is the Pinkertons and the Reconstruction feds. The cast is trying to start over in the frontier rim (the west). The union is shown as evil. The self directed crew is shown as hunted, but the better moral examples.

      The big issue I'm seeing here is context and understanding.
      Star trek of the 60s and 70s and 80s and 90s and early 2000s had a way of making the "support of LGBT, women's rights, anti racist" perspectives did so in a mostly "these issues were resolved over a hundred years ago" way, and not so "throw it all in your face because we have to make you remember all these issues exist" instead of progressing story. I'm all for support of LGBT and ridding the world of bigotry etc, but it shouldn't be the story of star trek, as star trek is about what's next, after the thing that is being dealt with after the thing that was dealt with after these issues modern tv is trying so hard to talk about... Shows like doctor who and star trek don't need to be someone's megaphone or soapbox , but rather, a demonstration that such issues can be a thing of the past, all but forgotten. When racism is shown in star trek, the characters should be reacting with confusion and almost disgust , not with a march and trumpet call to arms.

    I liked 'Firefly' a lot. It was quirky, original, thoughtful, clever, well written and performed by an excellent cast. In addition, the vast universe and backstory created could have easily accommodated a dozen series. I don't know what was going on in the minds of the suits at Fox, either. Maybe they wanted instant success and profits, being unable to understand the notion of letting things grow and develop. Years later the phrase 'cult following' must have been a bit of a shock for them to hear and realising they could have made a lot of money out of 'Firefly'. But by then it was too late. I am sad that there was not more.

After watching it, I was told there was a TV series. I loved the movie! I cried for Wash and I cheered for Mal...and then then got to watch the TV show on DVD. Watching the movie, I didn't need to know what the connection between Mal and Inara is or how long Simon and Kaylee had been trying to have a relationship. I connected emotionally and trusted the storyteller. Why do some people find that so hard to do? I feel like studing Film prevents people watching with their heart. Stargate SG1 was dominanting the airwaves, AND Stargate Atlantis hit the scene and took off!! The promos for it were off the scales. I don't remember (Key-REMEMBER) seeing promos for Firefly at all, and it was dumb luck I woke up one late night and a marathon of the series was running - that instantly made me a fan!!

      Eeee. Eeeew. Serenity was ... an ... okay-ish way to wrap up the series. It was kind of weird to reboot and rewire the characters as much as was done. Which I could have been okay with, had the deaths not piled up. Killing Wash was the straw that broke the camel's back for me. Alan Tudyk is too amazing to just write out like that. Even if they were afraid of not being able to get him onboard for more, they could have come up with something better than killing Wash. Killing Shepherd didn't win any points either. :\ And the story? Kind of WTF. Serenity could have been done better. It didn't really ... grab the coattails of Firefly. It just sort of mocked it from Firefly's shadow. In a way, I was kind of glad that the movie didn't have the same title as the series, as it really felt like an alternate universe kind of reboot.

    Heres the really big problem that one can only see in hindesight, fox was looking for immediate results in an untested niche genera, thinking weaton could bring his buffy audience to fox. What fox didnt understand is those audiences were cultivated over a long span of time. I think it took 2 seasons to get a dedicated following, and by the middle of the third it had a strong mix of followers and casual viewers. It took the word of mouth and encouragment of the established fans to sustain and grow the audience. That is actually what got stargate onto fox. It was originally on showtime where they were a bit more willing to create original programming than fox and take risks. I think stargate had like 5 or 6 seasons already with showtime that fox or scifi was able to cheaply show reruns until the audience interest built up before they could show new seasons.
    I firmly believe that if weaton had been signed with showtime or scifi at that time, they would have gotten at least 3 seasons before pitching to another network.

A soon as I saw it, I tagged it as one of the most brilliant Sci Fi movies I had ever seen. I left the theater craving more of the Firefly universe and assumed, at the time, that like many other movies, it was based on a popular book. As soon as I had an opportunity, I looked up "Serenity" on the internet, hoping to identify the author. I was thrilled to find out that it was based on a TV series and equally dismayed to find out it had been cancelled after only 11 episodes. I bought the DVD series for myself and was utterly floored. The series was every bit as good as the movie - and more. Since that time, I have purchased three more copies of the series as gifts for family and friends and in each case, the recipient has become a fan of the movie and the series, as well. Joss Wheadon is a minstrel genius and, regardless of whose fault it was, the loss of the Firefly universe is an entertainment tragedy. I'd swap out Star Wars for the Firefly universe any day.

    Book's backstory was explained in the Serenity comic book The Shepherd's Tale.
    He was once a high-ranking Alliance officer who screwed up big time and went into hiding by stealing the identity of a dead Shepherd.
    So all this time, not only was Mal harboring two fugitives; he also unknowingly let a former Alliance officer on his boat.

    Interesting how the viewing numbers averaged 4.7 million for Firefly, yet now we got Batwoman at about 800k and its present numbers in season 2 are at 477k. Its even got renewed for a season 3. Not far or sensical, just how the world works at times.

      No they got rid of firefly because of the anti establishment feel it boldly broadcasted, I loved it & still do.
      Lots of rebels & freedom fighters love firefly for the message.
      Fuck the system fly low & off the radar do the work & get paid while living free.
      Take a look at the world now it's getting real crowded in my sky I don't like it, it's getting hard for a honest criminal to live.

      @@brandonontama2415 That is correct on Fox & the CW, I was just talking on view numbers and how its unfair we still have BW, when its a lot less watched show.

    I really miss having a great scifi epic western to watch, and I just don't see how anyone would be able to build something to match Firefly. The Mandalorian is great (it really is), but it's not the same.

    9:00 - There's a one off canon comic that tells this story. As hinted at in the film, he was an OP.
