The passing of a loved one is a profound and challenging experience. In the Indian spiritual tradition, performing karma and kriyas (rituals) after death is seen as crucial for the departed soul's journey. Sadhguru, a revered spiritual leader, offers guidance on these practices, emphasizing their significance in helping the soul transcend to higher realms of existence.
    Understanding Karma and Kriyas
Karma refers to actions or deeds, while kriyas are specific yogic practices or rituals. After a person dies, the rituals performed by the family are believed to aid the departed soul in its journey beyond the physical realm. These practices are deeply rooted in ancient wisdom and aim to provide solace to the departed soul, ensuring its smooth transition and helping it attain liberation (moksha).
    The Importance of Rituals
According to Sadhguru, when a person dies, the physical body ceases, but certain aspects of their energy and consciousness continue. The rituals performed after death help in dismantling these residual energies, allowing the soul to move on without unnecessary attachments. This process is believed to ease the soul's journey, reducing its attachment to earthly existence and promoting its progression towards higher planes of existence.
    Key Rituals to Perform
Antyeshti (Cremation or Burial): This is the primary ritual where the physical body is either cremated or buried. The act of cremation is said to hasten the release of the soul from its physical confines.
Tarpana (Offering of Water): This ritual involves offering water and other sacred substances to the departed soul. It is believed to quench the spiritual thirst of the soul, providing it with the necessary energy for its journey.
Pind Daan (Offering of Rice Balls): Performed on the tenth or thirteenth day after death, this ritual involves offering rice balls (pindas) to the departed soul. These offerings symbolize the body and are meant to nourish the soul in its onward journey.
Shraddha (Remembrance): This is an annual ritual performed to honor the memory of the deceased. It is believed to keep the connection with the departed soul alive, ensuring its well-being in the afterlife.
    Sadhguru’s Perspective
Sadhguru emphasizes the importance of performing these rituals with devotion and understanding. He suggests that the rituals are not mere customs but profound processes that can significantly impact the departed soul’s journey. He also encourages the living to approach these practices with sincerity, as they help in dealing with grief and provide a sense of closure.
