I went into boats straight out of Raleigh and joined Rorqual in late 74 until she was scrapped. I then served on Sealion and Otter until I left the mob in 81. Great memories, thank you.
my late father Ray Smith"smudge"was in subs during 50's and 60's also an instructor at HMS Dolphin and was one of Matt Todd's crew who held escape record from sub off coast of Malta. God bless my dad im so proud of you🙏🙏❤️
Did my Part III on Andrew. served on Finwhale, Cachalot, Narwhal + Resolution (Stbd) 1st and 2nd Commission. Happy Days. Would love to see 'Cox'n Banks' perform at the SETT again! Great to see Ken Frewer too.
Fond Memories! I served in Onslaught (in SM7) Aeneas (in SM2) Olympus (in SM3) and Finwhale (in SM1). I actually think this film is somewhat earlier than 1974 because I think I'm right to say that by 1970 submarines no longer had pennant numbers painted on the fin. Furthermore, the boat in the ice (S49) is the ill-fated Artemis that sank alongside Dolphin in 1971 and for that reason its extremely unlikely that boat would have been used for a publicity film after it had sunk! I clearly remember that shocking occasion, I was on the bridge of Aeneas as we approached either Stavangar or Haugesund for a jolly (I can't remember which) when we received the SUBSUNK signal!
Thank you for the info, I am certain that you are correct! The dates are a little hazy, some are filmed but not released until sometime later, we should have stated that it was used from 1974, We will look at doing that going forward :) many thanks
Incidentally, Alliance was another 'unlucky' A-boat. She did not sink, but in an earlier Commission she went aground on Bembridge Ledge (IoW) and in her last Commission (in SM2) she had a battery explosion that killed a senior rating. If I remember correctly, the explosion was caused by battery ventilation failure - one of the flap valves shut due to a sheared pin while externally the indicator showed 'open'. Following that accident we were always required to physically operate the flap valves and not rely on the indicators when checking battery ventilation prior to snorting or when charging alongside. If that accident wasn't enough, on her first dive after repairs she hit the bottom! I clearly remember these incidents since I was on Aeneas (also SM2) at the time. Sometimes while alongside the OODs would share duties and I recall doing rounds on Alliance several times. Frank
I joined the Royal Navy in 1970 and remember watching this film during training. I also remember being told during training that pennant numbers were no longer painted on submarines because it made it too easy for the Russians to identify them.
Volunteered for boats whilst at Ganges in 73, drafted when I finished my scablifter courses Never got past the medical. Duff ears never got to run silent or deep..
@@davidhoward5392 if you like you and a a few mates can jump in the back of my transit, I'll drive you around for 24 hour periods in the dark ,then drop you off at a cat house somewhere , then back on board for tea and biccys ,my uncle was in subs and reckons it's pretty much the same experience, except for the salt water
Good video, but you forgot to mention that special fragrance, "ode de diesel" that diesel sub sailors have. MT2 (SS) USS George C Marshall SSBN 654 1971-1975.
Thanks for the memories. Served on Rorqual S02. Alcide S65. Sealion S07. In the 60's
Glad you enjoyed it and the memories were good ones!

Was the rotation 2 months on, 2 months off? When off, how many free days did you have?
How many hrs per day did you do while at sea?
Excellent video thanks for sharing
Glad you enjoyed it 👍⚓

thanks for sharing, always keen to hear of other peoples experiences and knowledge :)
I was told the same story when I did a week on her at Portland - clockwork mousing. Went on to get my Dolphins.

Know the RN, i wouldn't bet against them using this video today too :)

With respect, you are mistaken, Alliance was (is) S67. Frank
