    The worst thing is: Kenobi was so well known in the Clone Wars for his diplomatic and talking skills. Without even using a lightsaber or a blaster sometimes, he could stop fights before they even happened. That's how he earned the nickname "The Negotiator". Hell, even his flagship was named after him. And now here he is being told and lead around by a 10 year old and exposing themselves to a couple of stormtroopers!!

    Tearing down the heroes that men looked up to as boys is a great way to destroy their own sense of heroism and value. I didn’t want to think it, but it looks like this stems from a contempt for men and the male heroic myth. It’s sad that that’s what they think it means to empower women. That is entirely what it is about. The entire world view of the people running these franchises is shaped by Marxist critical theory. Their goal is to deconstruct male heros (especially white male heros) for their purpose of building a new mythology where men generally and white men in particular are portrayed unironically as members of an oppressive all powerful patriarchy while at the same time being weak and incompetent. (If white men are weak and incompetent I'm not sure how they created an all powerful patriarchy hell-bent on oppressing women and minorites. But we aren't supposed ask questions like that.) It would just be stupid and funny if their blatant bigotry weren't also incredibly evil.

    The whole "Obi Wan has given up" thing would make more sense if he wasn't adamant in the first episode about training Luke (while arguing with Owen). How is he planning on training anyone when he's buried his lightsaber, stopped using the force, and become a weak old man? And the point about him being too weak to protect Luke is a great one. If he felt that responsibility then how in the world could he let himself become SO vulnerable? (Except against non-Force users, then he's basically John Wick until the plot decides he isn't)

    • @Intel13thGenBurns
      @Intel13thGenBurns 2 роки тому +88

      Yep. Every other error aside, this is the biggest glaring mistake in the whole thing so far. If Obi's entire reason for being there is to watch over Luke, protect and then train him, why the hell would he let both his force powers lapse AND bury his sabre somewhere? If at any point the Empire, bounty hunters or whoever could waltz up to the ranch, what was his plan exactly? The worst Star Wars show to date. Frustrating to watch.

    • @teamtx1578

      Also we know he does end up training Luke in A New Hope and he's still in touch with the Force in that movie. We know that the narrative is just going to end up returning to the status quo by the end of the series which makes the whole narrative completely pointless. It's like this show was literally created just so they could give Obi Wan the Last Jedi Luke Skywalker treatment.

      @@teamtx1578 I'm confused. You're mad, because they gave a realistic period of Kenobi's life where he is depressed, and ridden with PTSD while all by himself on a dead end desert planet. And you think it's bad that they're making a show to show how he comes out of that depression, and later becomes the Obi-Wan we know in A New Hope? If your argument is well 'we know how he turns out' You must have hated the prequels cause we know Anakin turned out.
      There is a good amount of flaws in the show, I do not understand the people who hate that Obi-Wan is depressed, or has PTSD however. That is what you should have been expecting, especially even in Legends Obi-Wan was very depressed for a good amount of time on Tatooine.

      But even if this were not the case, Filoni has no involvement with the Obi-Wan Kenobi series. He is not a writer, not a producer, not an executive producer, not the director. Kenobi was at some planet with young Leia and she convinced him to go on some transport driven by a mole guy then he slips up talking in front of a storm trooper squad that hitched a ride for no good reason, then he talks openly about being a Jedi in front of the driver 5 feet away, then they get betrayed by the mole but the officer of the new squad was actually helping the Jedi although how did she become a platoon leader??? Then they go to some repair shop and Kenobi acts like a pussy when Vader comes but is saved by some chick who shot like one shot and a whole platoon of storm troopers and Vader just kind of stop fighting. It was all so contrived it made my head hurt.

    In the duel on Mustafar, Lucas actually added the moment--and in doing so explained and made canon--that two powerful force user can't just toss, push, grap, choke, etc. each other willy-nilly. There's the moment when both Anakin and Obi-Wan reach back and attempt to force push simultaneously, both of them digging in and focusing hard, but neither get any effect. Also, if we think of a scene like the fight between Yoda and Dooku, or even Luke and Vader in TESB, they/he throw inanimate objects around, but never use the force directly on their opponents. Force lightning seems to be the best technique for attacking other forces users.

      I'm not complaining that Obi Wan falling to hard times is outright impossible and it should never happen. It's that Obi Wan falling to hard times misses the whole point of why Obi Wan is such a great character. We want to see Obi Wan conquer his demons the only way he knows how: his wits, his skills, and his trust in the Force. The fact that he needs to be lectured back into this mindset with nary a detailed explanation shows how little they actually cared for this character.

      Maybe we should wait for the conclusion of the series before we consider it a failure? A person so in tune with the force that he knew exactly how things would play put and was able to vanish and be totally absorbed in to the force effortlessly. So the reason they basically nerfed him and had him regress is much the same reason they did it with Luke. Firstly, it was to denigrate and tear down the old character, and secondly because they don't know how to write a powerful character. One of the problems they mentioned in interviews with the original writer of the sequels (who was let go while the project was still in pre-production) was that he was having the problem where as soon as these powerful, competent characters like Jedi Master Luke showed up all the problems were solved. They had no idea how to make a conflict that was on the new characters' level but still involve the OT guys in the story. So they solved it by stripping them of all their power and authority. Han is no longer a general (and was never the galaxy-class diplomat he became in the EU) and is back to grifting; Leia is no longer a Senator (and never was the chancellor or premier or whatever that she was in the EU) and is just back to running a little band of rag-tag soldiers in a hopeless situation (somehow), and Luke is no longer Grand Master Luke (and the Jedi were never resurrected like they were in the EU) and he's back to living in the middle of bum-fuck nowhere and impotently griping about everything.
    They couldn't handle those characters and the competence and intelligence they would have brought to the table and so had to dumb everything down to a level they COULD manage. Same thing now with Obi-Wan. We know what he was before this, we know what he was after this. Hell, in Rebels we see him pretty much JUST after this (I'm pretty sure that's still canon, right?). But the writers can't handle competent Obi-Wan so we get whoever this retard is.

      @@isakaldazwulfazizsunus7564 I'm not advocating for Dragon Ball-Z power escalation or anything like that. It's less a matter of power levels than it is just competence, which is a very different thing. But mostly I'm criticizing them for not having the imagination to create a scenario that new, entry-level characters could solve without the OT guys stealing the show.
      I can think of any number: the old guys are distracted with some other crisis, or they're too comfortable resting on their laurels after decades of peace, or the situation the newbies are sent to deal with turns out to be much worse than previously thought, etc. etc.
      In any case, power escalation is the path they chose anyway. Remember the Death Star? Here's an even biggerer Death Star! Remember the Emperor? Here's an even eviler Emperor!
      The sequels are garbage from any angle. I expect little more from these shows.

Somehow between both Episode 3 and Rebels he becomes a complete husk of a Jedi. They clearly want to portray all the OG characters as mentally broken. If *Mace Windu* somehow survived getting thrown out the window and electrocuted I would wager they would have him living out a halfway house addicted to spices and cut off from the force. I get why but it's honestly kind of insane to me how hard disney has gone on destroying the OG characters in order to elevate their weaker new characters. It's not a coincidence the old characters are male and usually white while the new characters are female and not always but frequently non-white. IMO the tear down of old characters to make the new characters look better is easily the worst writing choice one can make. It completely flies in the face of the monomyth blueprint too. All of it comes from this deep seated resentment and disrespect women have now for men in general.

    They could have changed a few things, and pointed out a few things, to make some of the stuff in the show make sense. Namely Obi-Wan's hesitance to use his lightsaber. If they had to wherewithal to pretty much say;
    "Look, I could use this weapon to cut down the empire's stormtroopers no problem. But then it gives me another problem. The damage a lightsaber does to a body is unique and unmistakable. Once the empire finds those bodies, it is only a matter of time before they realize that it was a lightsaber that killed them. What do you think will happen then? The empire will send a swarm of unnecessary troubles our way looking for a Jedi on the loose. THAT is why I hesitate to use this weapon, Leia. That is why I will resort to such uncivilized methods of combat. And NOTHING will change my course unless it becomes absolutely necessary for me to ensure your survival."

      Right. That's what makes it so bizarre; in high sci-fi and fantasy, it's so EASY to invent bullshit like that without it being contrived or contradictory that any writer who fails to do it, and instead has plot holes, is just an incompetent buffoon. In a more grounded setting and plot, it can be harder to account for every little "What if?" the audience may ask, but they could easily explain how he can't use the Force willy-nilly because a guy like Vader can, even from a great distance, sense that shit, at least enough to give him a direction to search. Another stupid thing: We can’t see any character growth with Kenobi or Skywalker because we’re picking up midstream in their lives. We know who they were and who they’ll become, so the emotional heart of the show has to be another character, someone we can see grow. I wouldn’t have chosen Leia as the primary, but okay. Instead of giving us a place to go, though, they drop her in roughly fully formed, already possessing the strong-willed qualities that make her a leader later on. She should have started out as a pampered teenage princess, but the kidnapping is what transforms her, along with the help of Kenobi. He helps bring out the Padme, and perhaps even scolds her for being a little too Anakin. But no. I guess they decided that would send a wrong message to girls, so instead we get a fully-formed character (who would be a SENATOR were it not for her whimsy) played by a too-young actress who thinks she’s in a cheesy 90s sitcom. Soldiers? Dead people? Sith Inquisitors? FLEA? Nope, not scared.

Now the Kenobi series has its issues, don't get me wrong, but the Force is very much a symbolic/spiritual thing that can come and go depending on the mental state of the character, and this idea is hardly new in the franchise.
      They could still blow it in the next three episodes, but so far I personally haven't seen anything that feel egregious or inconsistent with what we've seen before. Perhaps we should wait for the mini-series' story arc to be completed before we write it off as a failure.

Mauler mentions that he isn't using the two most powerful tools in his arsenal the Force, and his Lightsaber, but if he uses either it is going to draw attention to himself and Luke. If he uses the Force, Vader is instantly going to sense that and track him down, and a lightsaber is to recognizable as a Jedi's weapon so of course he wouldn't use it. In some older material it was said that surviving Jedi had to be careful about using their powers for two main reasons. The first was that doing crazy things via the force where people could see it would start rumors that would spread.
    Secondly, using the force would create "ripples" in it. This could be sensed sometimes at great distances, as was seen in the original movies. Eventually this could attract the assassins or even Vader himself. So, Obi Wan was supposed to have been in hiding and essentially training at very low levels to avoid detection.
