    This is a bit of an intermission in my 5-part series on organic foods. So far I’ve covered the questions Are Organic Foods More Nutritious? (nutrititionfacts.org/video/Are...) and Are Organic Foods Safer? (nutritionfacts.org/video/are-o...)
    Next, I’m going to wrap it up with what I think the available science suggests is the bottom-line when it comes to choosing which type of produce to buy in the final two in the series:
    • Are Organic Foods Healthier? (nutritionfacts.org/video/are-o...)
    • Are the Benefits of Organic Food Underrated or Overrated? (nutritionfacts.org/video/are-t...)
    The most important reason to wash produce is to reduce the risk of food-borne illness. Ironically, the food poisoning viruses may be found in the pesticides themselves. Check out my video Norovirus Food Poisoning from Pesticides (nutritionfacts.org/video/norov....

    Pesticides in plant food can easily be removed with salt water. Pesticides in animal food is impossible to remove because of build up of pesticides in the fat.

      +mayorc bacteria will likely die if cooked, so if you have a compromised immune system or an auto immune disease you should probably be cooking everything. otherwise that's what your immune system is for

    I live in the US now so I really wash my produce very well with dish soap and rinse thoroughly; but in Africa, we use saltwater to wash our leafy greens/cabbages, to get the bugs out and plain water to get dirt from harvesting and handling, off our fruits and vegies...We do not have the pesticide issue since our farmers adhere mostly to organic farming or less commercialized systems of crop cultivation.

    Hello, could you please make a video about the cause of a low body temperature? I am eating a plant based diet now for more than two years and I have recently noticed that my body temperature is constantly below 35 celsius. As far as I know it should be around 36.5-37. Can you give your thoughts on this? Many thanks

    • @balletbynight7368
      @balletbynight7368 7 років тому +4

      A low basal body temperature is an indicator of hypothyroidism. Please have your doctor run a FULL THYROID PANEL, NOT just a TSH level. The panel shoud include a T4 and T3 (Free and total), Reverse T3, Thyroid Peroxidase Antibodies (TPOAb) and Thyroglobulin Antibodies (TgAb). The bolded tests are to diagnose Hashimoto's, an autoimmune thyroid disease that is more complicated and can do the body much harm. Also, if you have an underactive thyroid, insist on the natural, dessicated thyroid (Armour Thyroid), not Synthroid or cytomel. These are just synthetics and do not convert to the T3 in the body, leaving you sick, but may alter the blood test results to show an improvement. To see more, go to stop the thyroid madness dot com. Most people in US are hypothyroid, which can manifest as digestion, cardiac, skin and hair, weight gain/loss, fatigue, muscle weakness, depression and all kinds of other ills. The standard test, the TSH level does not register with most sufferers due to the wide range of "normal".

    I also read somewhere that the pesticides that remain on produce, without washing, isn't supposed to be that harmful. Basically, don't let pesticides prevent you from eating produce. I'll just use the salt water solution for the dirty dozen, because cooking is time consuming enough without having to double wash everything.

    We have a water softener. Will softened tap water be effective enough as a sodium-based cleaner for vegetables? Will reusing the softened wash-water be harmful for watering flowerbed plants and the vegetable garden?

    • @mannys9130
      @mannys9130 Рік тому

      Do NOT water flowers or other plants with softened tap water that comes from your salt-based water softener. It will make the soil wayyyyyyyy too high in sodium over time and it will harm the plants. Plus, the chlorine or chloramine in tap water isn't that great for many more sensitive plants. You're far better off using a garden hose connected to the water line feeding your house up stream of the softener. You also shouldn't be cooking with or drinking that softened water yourself since your sodium intake will be much higher than it normally should be for health reasons. Washing dishes, washing laundry, washing your car, showering, etc is all great and dandy but don't consume or water other living things with softened water unless you're using a "salt free" water softener.

I like the germ-killing effect of vinegar though. I wonder if adding a splash of vinegar to the salt solution would affect it's power, and would that be a strong enough concentration of vinegar to do anything much.

    • @VeganWalk

      I wonder if it is good to leave some bacteria, after all it's because we're so sanitary that we need b12 supplements. As for e-coli that would only be an issue if there was cross contamination, right? And it's only certain types of e-coli that are likely to make us sick. But, I think our bodies can handle a small amount. So, rinsing and rubbing is probably sufficient (I guess, lol). I also wonder if we're plant based with a strong microbiome, wouldn't our gut flora crowd out bad bacteria?

    I disagree with the claim that it is not possible to be 10 times as effective as water. Say water removes those 80% of pesticides mentioned in the video. So it leaves 20%. If a wash were to remove 98% of pesticides it would leave only 2%. So the consumer would only be exposed to a tenth of the amount of pesticides (2% instead of 20%). So if this were to made clear I would be on board with calling a wash that removes 98% of pesticides "10 times as effective as water".

    • @scholasticphilosopher760
      @scholasticphilosopher760 6 років тому +1

      That is simply not how arithmetic works, if something is twice as effective that means that it is 200% better. That is simply how we use the meaning of the word, when it used. x10 is a multiplier effect. To be it in germ killing, or in this case pesticide residue.
      Suppose that we were to use units that were more easy to understand, say there are 1000 units of pesticides residue in total of all the stuff you want to eliminate from your fruits and veggies. So if you remove 800 units, and have 200 left. You say that if you had only 20 units of residue (or as you put it 2% of our 1000 units) left that would mean 10 times more effective than water. But that is incorrect! In order for it to be ten times more effective it has to be ten times more effective of the original unit of removal, which is why Dr. Greger was correct in pointing out that is mathematically impossible. You would have to remove 8000 units of pesticides in order to be 10 times more effective. The proper term would be 1.18 times more effective (ratios my friend remember that in 2nd grade?) than water, otherwise what is the point of using words if they have no meaning? In attempting to correct Dr. Greger, you end up looking stupid mate. Do not take it the wrong way, its just before trying to correct someone who is 3 standard deviations to the right more intelligent than you are, the first thing to ask yourself if whether your thinking about it is wrong, and why.

      I think it's a lot of salt too. I mean, I eat a lot of veggie and fruit. I'd be using salt all day. I think rinsing and rubbing is probably fine. I bet that's all Dr. Greger does :)

    So only organic food eater will live longer...
    NOT all people can afford Non GMO or /& Organic food as it is more xpensive than conventional ones., so does it mean that vegan Non GMO & non organic food consummer will die sooner with cancer , MS, etc ? ? I hate organic food propaganda, it is UNFAIR for those who can not afford it .
    SO what the benefit for being vegan then ??? ....
    What left to eat for the marginal vegan consummer who can't afford organic's or non-GMO's ???.

      As the video said, simply soak your fruits and vegetables (organic or not) in salt water and there will be negligible or not pesticides on it.
      The benefit of going vegan is you avoid meat. Meat has high amounts of pesticides in it because animals eat plants that have not had pesticides removed. The pesticides in animal feed build up in animal fat. When you eat meat, you are getting a concentrated dose of pesticides.
      If you want to avoid pesticides, your best bet is to go vegan, buy organic all the time, and then soak the organic plant food in salt water.

      See this is the problem I can't stand to see and hear. If YOU can't buy organic then just be okay with it and do the best you can! OF COURSE non pesticide foods are healthier for you. But we all know it's more costly, so just do the best you can and keep a healthy coat over yourself as much as you can do comfortably. For goodness sake, Doc just let us know that salt water removes a lot of pesticides...I would think that's something to be happy about instead of focusing on the negative and complaining.

      That's untrue. Organic is generally better for the environment and farm workers but there's little evidence it's better for the consumer.
      The video showed how you can eliminate the pesticides by soaking in salt water. You can go further by sprinkling baking soda and vinegar on first and then soaking in salt water and washing off.
