As a chemistry student... I dont think its needed tbh. Usually, if you are really that concerned about chemical residues, then just wash it in alcohol (to remove those not dissolvable in water). Still have to wash in water. Besides, these "washes" are also chemicals, so... decide for yourself. Btw our tap water is already filled with chemicals too (you can check PUB's list - though these are mostly for cleaning and disinfection to make our water safe + minerals needed to maintain a healthy body). Thus, if you really want to talk about chemical residue, you need to throw out alot of factors. TL;DR answer... Do you feel sick eating out? If you do, then please cook at home. If you don't, then there is no big worry. Separate reality with marketing.
We can use salt, vinegar or baking soda to wash the fruits & veges. Then rinse the veges with hot boiling water for about a min or so depending on the size/amount, then cook at lower heat about 70c - 80c.
She mention those with low immunity especially kids below 5. How do these kids build immunity then? Being too clean and sanitized might not be a good thing as it lowers your immunity. Just like if someone lives in a totally isolated area with no bacteria, once released he will immediately get sick and even die.
I don’t understand why you wanna take chance for children below 5. They have weak immune system and may develop serious issue if some rare bacteria enters into the body. We can slowly change our method of handling the food after 5 yrs old. I see no issue on that but everyone thoughts are different so I respect yours.
@@VVIP_Prestige Remember what pesticides are for and composed of. If you are that worried, wash your fruit and vegetables in methylated spirit (be careful, the methanol is added to prevent drinking and if ingested and cause blindness) and then in lots of water (or just lemon juice/vinegar - which can affect taste). For your case, not saying its wrong but pesticides and these "washes" are all chemicals. It will be hard to gauge the amount of chemicals and what is what (plus side reactions), which is why I believe why they didnt do a chemical composition check. Even if it will be approved, those companies producing those "washes" will have to reveal their recipe. As much as I would love to see, it is impossible to do it.
This is the best and most informative video I have found on fruit and Vege washes and removing bacteria and I have seen many, many videos already. Thankyou.
a little bit of bacteria is good for you. Dont need to be so sterile clean. Like others have commented, I'm more concerned about the pesticide and herbicides used during the growing process. Wish CNA can do a part 2 on veggie washes that focus on this.
Very insightful investigation as always! Though for a lot of households who eat out often, I think they have other things to worry about and not just the microbes on the fruits and veggies ...
My rule is just water for fruits/vegetable that will be cut or cooked. For harder fruits that i eat with the skin on i'll scrub with salt as they are usually sold on the racks in the open.
Hard, especially if you read my earlier comments. Chemicals are everywhere, in our water etc. Unless Muna herself can limit the amount of washing she used + the company itself reveal their actual recipe to jeoperdise sales + testing out the chemicals in our water supply, or not its quite an exhaustive list. Honestly, just marketing, but each of us can decide for ourselves if we really need it.
thank you cna insider for making educational videos and eliminate rumours and fomo. but i would like to show to my parents whom they are not very good in english. is there anyway where you have chinese, malay and tamil versions . or the very least subtitles in different subtitles
No,I won't be fooled on such washing products for veggies and fruits sold in the market !! The best and the safest-- vinegar/water. Why make things so complicated?😅
Great report but I don't understand the results. How did washing in water outperform washing in solution...plus water...? Maybe we need a more detailed breakdown of how you soaked and rinsed.
i have always think washing vege and fruit with washing product it is equally add a chemical into my washing part so luckily i still love washing with water as well with baking soda salt . not yet try the lemon hehe
a good wash of water is enough... well if theyre grown organically but if theyve got pesticide then youll need black light to make sure its washed clean
The waxy residue found in most vegetables and fruits such as apples and broccoli cannot be washed off easily with water. This lab test only tested for bacteria, not other substances like oesticides or wax which is also a concern for me as a consumer to be consuming them on a daily basis. I think this study could have been made better if you had interviewed any of the veggie wash companies to explain how their product is more superior than normal methods like water.
For sales, I doubt these companies will tell you the truth. I had questioned one of the water purification companies before (being a chemical major) about the chemicals and the use of purifying the water, but I never got a satisfied answer. The natural wax on these fruits and vegetables are a protective mechanism and also to prevent the fruit/vegetable from drying out that fast (with respect that there is no plucking/cutting etc). Our body only absorbs nutrients... the rest (in nature) will be flushed out. I doubt its a big worry unless the doctor diagnosed a patient that cannot take in these waxes.
Does anyone really believe there's a LOT of pesticide on their veggies and fruits in SINGAPORE, where these things are tested all the time? There are standards, and just wash it with water.
Why would anyone buy a product that claims to wash your kitchen, bathroom, and floors use it to wash their produce? There is nothing better than baking soda and soap to wash whatever residue any produce might have.
actually the using water vs commercial products is not exactly true. The smell of the pesticide and wax removed from broccoli and blueberry using commercial product are very obvious. I use agape nature which is organic and comes in the form of concentrated solution, and needed to mix with water into a spray bottle. i not advertising for them but it actually helps sanitize the fruits and vegetables for consumption.
Saw news report of radiated elements found in farm n seafood exports to date in korea from Japan, esp w the current dumpin of its nuke water into the ocean, are food imports tested by our governing bodies here at all frm Japan? Anyone know? be a great episode to shed some light on this subject ?
How about sticking the veges and fruits in the microwave oven for say 10 seconds to kill off the surface microorganisms and then wash them under running tap water to clear the pesticide and other chemicals?
I assume one wash their vegetable to get rid of dirt and "pesticide" residue.....not the natural bacterial that are good for the environment and maybe are good probiotic....This program focused on the wrong thing...Dang
this happens when capitalism is at its peak, eventually you run out of essential products to sell to the consumers so you create a problem so that you can sell a product
As multiple other commenters have mentioned, what most of us are more interested in is knowing whether pesticide residue (especially glyphosate which is carcinogenic) can be washed off using these products, rather than bacteria. You don't need a special wash to get rid of bacteria, and most bacteria can be killed by high heat via cooking anyway. A useless documentary.
Should have looked into chemical residues, such as pesticides or insecticide, on the vege and fruits as well, not just focusing on bacteria
There is regulation of pesticide residue on produces. Source below

My Uncle did that, but he still died from Stomach Cancer. :)

Yup it's actually really bad to not have some environmental bacteria.
Very good observation!
Does the same apply for pesticides? I’m getting bored of washing fruit and veg lol

I am curious if the pesticide amount can be reduced by those products. Would have liked to see the results for that.

Water is enough
Even if wasn't properly wash, let your immune system defend your body.
You will get stronger and not fall sick easily
Would be good to look into pesticide residue as some of the washes claim they remove this.

Yeah big miss on not mentioning the effect (or not) on pesticides and chemical residue. I’m not worried about the dirt/bacteria.
For me washing fruits and vegetables with water and salt is enough. No need for those expensive liquids 😌
True! The rest are a waste of money!!
Super helpful, thank you for doing this topic, CNA!!!
What did you wash the lemon with before using it to wash the fruits/veggies?
Remenber most tap water is treated with clorine which works great for cleaning most anything. So tap water works.
Thank you for your video. Very informative.

I never used it. I just wash with water. And for fruit, I use bicarbonate.
Yes,its a good and best choice 👍👍
What about vinegar? But glad i never buy those commercial fruit and veg washer!! Been waiting for this epsiode to be out!!
Alters the taste too much unless you really like vinegar.
I wash my fruits & vegetables with vinegar & or baking soda soak for 15 mins, rinse well.

Reflecting my knowledge.
hello and thanks question can you proper the salt and baking soda up front and keep in a bottle ? ifso then for how long
I didn't even know you could buy "Veggie Wash". That does not exist in my country thankfully. Lot of unnecessary plastic bottles not produced.
How about flour and vinegar ? We need encore pls.

What about well washing liquid acting like soaps in those? Would you use dishwashing liquid to wash vegetables?
Can you please try the electronic/ionic method ?
I think the real test should be which method removes more pesticides. That’s probably more important.
I just wash my fruits and vegetables with water. I cook the vegetables with high heat and take a charcoal pill if my tummy is not feeling well. 😅
interesting and surprising.
but whatever, i will still do my routine, wash with running water, soak in water with salt, and rinse.
I use salt and baking soda to wash apples…it works!

Haiyaaa. Ya what about vinegar?? I wash my edible plants with baking soda and vinegar tho.
It would produce salt, and CO2 from the reaction of those two.
Ok but how should you wash them though? Is rincing enough?
Can you wash with boiling water is it good or bad ?
