I heard from a my Toyota mechanic friend (not specific to Toyota's) about this: it actually states in the Toyota OEM manual for dealership mechanics to remove the manual window cranks using a rag or towel. Just take the rag or towel and feed it between the crank and door panel, it will pop right off. And the metal clip will get caught in the rag so it doesn't go flying across the garage.
WD-40 also makes a lithium grease in a spray can. You should use that instead because it will last a much much longer time. Also hit the seals around with window and she'll move like butter!
you can also lube the rubber or felt window tract with silcone spray . also a good trick to remove the window crank handle (clip on backside) is use a shop wrag . just pull around behind handle and the wrag will snag clip and pull off .
For those of you that live in the rust and salt belt states WD is not the thing to use. I use the DEXRON Trans Fluid especially if the bottle says contains PTFE or PTF additives. WD is really affected by rains and cold weather and heat it's a temporary thing at best. Trans fluids with the PTF is a Petroleum Teflon it bonds with the metals. I will usually take my door apart and let the truck open a day or two for a few coating of the tranny fluid. I use a paint brush and paper cup to hold the fluid and brush it on. I do a few coatings of it over two days time and use Teflon white grease on the main gear. Has permanently fixed every manual and electric window operator I touched. The best thing about the trans fluid is will not etch clear coat paint. Can't say so much for single stage paints.... So use paper towels. Wipe off the bottoms of the doors with a cleaner when when you are done. Don't get it on mom and dads driveway do it in the grass so you don't get your butt kicked for being a slob... This application lasts a long time thru hot and cold weather rain ice and snow... I also use RAINX on the window itself helps the window glide up and down the tracks and seals.
Another problem I experienced was the plastic guide for the worm gear had fallen off and the end of the work gear was not curving around. It was going straight and running directly into the door metal with nowhere to go. I lubed the worm gear and reattached the guide tube. Now rolling it up/down is slicker than snot.
Mmm....Love the smell of WD-40 in the morning :) Ive had good luck lubing all the gears up with Marine Grease. Ohh & also a lot of those Window Hand Crank handles have a Retainer Clip so check before pulling off.
Hey Matt! I am a broke high school kid, but I really love the jeeping world! For my first car I bought a 93' XJ and I did a bunch of work to it to make it run and drive everyday, but no real crazy mods yet. I know in the past you guys were looking for new members and I know you found one, but I would really love to send you guys some videos when I scrape enough money together to get a lift and some things and become part of the Bleepin' jeep team! Thanks! P.S. I'm an 865 Knoxville guy too lol. Id love to see your shop sometime
Not sure on the XJ's but on the WJ's (99-04 Grand Cherokee) it's cables that move the window up and down. The motor connects to the "winch" with a gear. There's no gears connecting to the window brackets at all. From what I've seen when the electric windows crap out it's the cable guides that have broken where they go into the spool. Only way to fix it is to replace the regulator but different regulators have different gears from the motor to the regulator. Anyways awesome videos as usual Matt. Thank you.
Thank you for the mother of all inventions good o'l WD-40. Matt, I really thought you were going to smash it with a hammer like you did your finger last week, LOL! I would have also mentioned to lube the sliding track that the glass slides up and down in. Maybe you can use Lithium grease for that and go over the screw gears and the other gears as well with Lithium grease as I would have used the WD-40 just for cleaning the crud out of the moving parts. The nice part is the lithium grease is water resistant!
cool, never seen the worm drive mechanism before everything ive has the door panels off used basically a scissor lift deal.. i did replace a burn out more with a hand crank when i was in highschool cause i didnt have the hundred and some dollars they wanted for a new motor.. worked good for a cheap lil car!
Very helpful. I think I have that issue with my 06 Colorado. Teeth for the cranknhamdle seem to be fine and I couldn't figure when windows wouldn't raise or lower. This should do the trick. Thx a ton 👍👏👊
After WD-40 I would maybe use some spray lithium grease. WD-40 is a penetrant which is great for breaking free that crusty rust. Although it is not a lubricant.
Someone told me once that WD in WD40 stands for Water Displacing Formula 40. Not really a lubricant, more of a, well, water displacing penetrant. But there seem to be multiple WD40 formulas now. More brand name than product identifier. That said, the easy reach dispenser looks cool!
I'm having the same problem, except it only gets stuck at the very bottom, so I don't put it down all the way. I sprayed it yesterday with PB blaster, but I didn't know exactly how the thing worked. I'll need to get ez reach spray as well. Thanks!
Personal opinion here. I took apart my convertible's window regulators which were moving slower than death. Removed the factory grease and lubed them up with Shin-Etsu silicone grease and they operated about 98% like brand new. At five years and counting. WD40 isn't going to have nearly that long service life.
Hey Matt, I read all of the disclaimers but I still have a question. The sunshade in my XJ doesn't say to remove before driving. Does that mean I can drive with it in place? I've noticed a decrease in visibility out my windshield, but not sure if it's related to the sunshade. Thanks!
Hey matt, i appreciate all the job u are doing, honestly i prefer your videos when u give tips of fixing things. Can i ask u a favor if u may in some video Of your give me ur opinion whith the jeep liberty KJ limited 2003. Keep up the great job u are a very special guy, thank you in advance for all the tips u give us, best regard
In most popular videos I look through they always use WD-40 Sillicone Lubricant instead of Generic normal one to fix these issue ( ScottyKilmer, ChrisFix, etc ) Will it be ok to use normal one instead instead of silicone lubricant version? Does those 2 have big difference ? I found buying silicone lubricant un-practical as I already have practical generic WD-40 for daily use ?
I'm going to try wd40. I have stuck manual window on a 81 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme. I was able to lose the window and pry pull it up but it's not working properly.
Hey my driver side door on my 1992 Jeep Cherokee sport won’t open from the latch on the inside but I can open the door from the outside. Have you ever had this issue? And if so how can I fix it ?
easy reach huh, NOTED! this could have helped me alot in the past... When I got my ZJ (R.I.P.), I couldn't get the key in the rear hatch/trunk lock, so I used all manners of bent spray tubes at ridiculous angles with brake cleaner + WD to blast out the dirt until I could get it to turn. Then continued until I felt the lock start doing something. Then it was back and forth between brake cleaner and WD 40 and pushing/pulling on the hatch, while turning the key, while gigging the handle until it finally opened with a stream of dirty fluid leaking out the bottom of the hatch LOL. After that I finally had the mechanism more exposed, and was afraid to close the hatch until I was sure I had it working(I couldn't fit in the back with the hatch down).
Aaah yeeah LUBE is always good!! But,, if you have a electric window (especially JEEPS) most likely it's the switch,,simple fix,,take out, pull apart and re-soder connections an that usually works 😆
Window goes down...wont go up anymore. I knew it was going, so I just left about an inch, which was fine for it to catch. SOMEBODY rolled it all the way down. Now I have a hurricane coming and a XJ with no brakes and no driver window.... Brakes were bled, new calipers, discs and pads, all good...done brakes a million times. Now it goes to the floor as if no fluid is in. Im at the phase where I utterly DESPISE this Jeep
I saw a guy disassembling a window crank by slipping a string or piece of rope behind the crank and I absolutely never understood how the heck does that work. Are all cranks without a screw in the center are fastened by friction only? Can you help? (Ford focus mk 2.5 btw)
You sound kinda like Mr Rogers neighborhood. It would be cool if you made a video of fixing stuff , but doing it in his character.... Any way great video and super helpful..
BleepinJeep I found it lol. You are very talented sir and informative. I mean this with total respect, you could do what he did on TV. I stumbled upon this video and it helped me greatly. Keep up the good work sir I am subscribing to your channel. And thank you for replying to my comment you rock sir...
I remember you did a mirror replacement for hope floats but I have mirrors with the same adjustment mechanism as the Comanche except the passenger side no longer adjusts. Is there any fixing this? Or should I bite the bullet and swap for the late model mirrors?
I love WD-40 for a lot of things, but doesn't WD-40 collect dust creating the same problem as before? Well almost the same problem. the dust plugs it up. Aren't you suppose to use something like graphite?
I'm going to disagree. It's okay to clean out the junk with WD40 but it's a solvent. Take some bearing Grease and lube up that guide. Also if your missing the plastic sleeve under the crank, the gear can get caught up on junk in the door. It'll drive you nuts trying to figure out why your speakers are cutting in and out.
I have power windows and I have a problem. The window DOES go up. But if I hold it for too long it sounds like it keeps wanting to go up and sounds like gears grinding
Hmmm, sounds like its not shutting off when it gets to the top... at least the gears at the top arent that bad because gravity will take car of that for ya😂
i got a 1991 jeep cherokee 4.0L, about a month ago i drove it somewhere then all the sudden it wouldn’t start for shit and when it would start if you put it in reverse it would die and had to tow it home. I tried the battery, alternator, starter, wiring, the ignition switch and the neutral safety switch. I got nothing! Next i’m replacing the ignition cylinder to help with the starting problem but i really don’t know if that will help the dying when put into reverse. Also, when i say dying it goes dead...it doesn’t sputter or anything it shuts off and goes black no radio no lights etc
ARGH........that's. Actually the last thing you should use MATT,we IS silicone based and attracts dirt,Rv manufactures make a spray for such ,OR maybe try graphite as a club.SORRY WD IS NASTY!!!🔩🔧🔩
there is a chanell called AVE he recently tested a bunch of the lubricant sprays and the torque to break rusted nuts loose ---- he does not make advertising or paid review videos but he came up with wd40 works better then the rest for breaking rusty nuts loose ------- chanel is AVE -- video is rusty nuts lol
Sorry - But I don't believe in uncle bumblefuck's theory about spray lubricants. 20 years in the industry has taught me a little different story in experience than he explains.
Anybody else notice that the window wasn't stuck? I mean, I get it, a corporation wants to throw money at you to talk about their product. I wouldn't say no either, but c'mon Matt. Fake it a little better. Or even just talk about it being a hypothetical problem. To deal with a window that's actually sticking, I find it best to clean the mechanism with a solvent like brake clean, and then lubricate with white lithium grease. Then lube the channel fuzzies with silicone lubricant. Much better than WD.
well it wasnt stuck stuck but it was very dry and sandpapery and felt like the gears were gonna strip any second... like I said, that doesnt come through well on video.
Either way, there's plenty here to help out anyone who hasn't done this sort of repair before. Still good stuff. Just had to give you a hard time. Keep it up.

I own a Toyota now, but I still watch BJ just to hear Matt’s soothing voice
He sounds like Toby from the office
Same here man! Love Matt's shinnagins
That sounds too gay man
i know it is kinda randomly asking but do anyone know of a good place to watch new movies online ?
@Gianni Thiago i would suggest flixzone. Just google for it :)
Great how-to for older vehicles! Spray silicon lubricant into the felt window channels too to keep them moving up and down smoothly.
Thanks for the video Matt! And the update on the thumbnail....lol
Can’t wait to hear your Jeep story!!
Good ending! Lol! Glad to see you having some fun with the videos again
WD-40 also makes a lithium grease in a spray can. You should use that instead because it will last a much much longer time. Also hit the seals around with window and she'll move like butter!
nice, it seems they make a lot of products I didnt know about.
I love that interior

wrag ?
Dude thank you I've been waiting for a manual window demo.

WD-40 is great stuff. Short term fix though. Maybe some white Lithium grease once the WD got things all nice and loose.
I'd also recommend using a residue free spray to clean the window seals and where it slides up. that fixed my windows.
good idea!
I'm having the same problem, except it only gets stuck at the very bottom, so I don't put it down all the way. I sprayed it yesterday with PB blaster, but I didn't know exactly how the thing worked. I'll need to get ez reach spray as well. Thanks!

You make great videos! Keep em coming.
Great video Matt, and good job on having a sponsored video. With adpocalypse the cabbage has to come from somewhere.
Good one dude. Thanks...
do a video on a small 2" lift and maybe some more repair videos like this!
Great video.. now when are we going to actually get a walk around and or action video of the Comancheep.
You can binge watch on patreon if you need more now!
wow congrats on the sponsorship. I use WD-40 for a lot of stuff.
You should spray more??
I would use at least 3-4 cans.
Thank you!
I'll give this a try.
If you own a zj and the power window stops working its usually broken wiring in the door harness. 🤣
A good place to spray is the weather stripping on the sides of the window
How long does the WD-40 last on the gears? Does it require re-lubing every now and then?
...Great Tip... Thanks !!
Matt you need to do something with that thumb is that from when you smacked it with the hammer
Should I cut it off?
Plus a few drops of silicone on the window tracks
Hey Matt, I read all of the disclaimers but I still have a question. The sunshade in my XJ doesn't say to remove before driving. Does that mean I can drive with it in place? I've noticed a decrease in visibility out my windshield, but not sure if it's related to the sunshade. Thanks!

Nice, it really does come in handy when you need to get a hard to reach spot.
Hello....I am needing a manual window regulator for my 1989 Comanche....any idea on where to get one? They seem non existent. Thanks...
i spray wd 40 on conecter all the time works great lot times thats the fix on electric windows
Aaah yeeah LUBE is always good!! But,, if you have a electric window (especially JEEPS) most likely it's the switch,,simple fix,,take out, pull apart and re-soder connections an that usually works 😆
Not necessarily. I would prefer to lubricate all worm gears first before moving onto something more difficult.
What do you doo when you have stripped gears? Mine strips when it rolls up. Do you have to replace some components?
Window goes down...wont go up anymore. I knew it was going, so I just left about an inch, which was fine for it to catch. SOMEBODY rolled it all the way down. Now I have a hurricane coming and a XJ with no brakes and no driver window....

Great vid hopefully that’s all my car is haha thanks
i tried the lubricator spray but the window winder is still hard to roll
I saw a guy disassembling a window crank by slipping a string or piece of rope behind the crank and I absolutely never understood how the heck does that work. Are all cranks without a screw in the center are fastened by friction only? Can you help? (Ford focus mk 2.5 btw)
Uluç Özcan they use a clip behind the crank and you can use a trim tool or a flat bladed screw driver to pop it off then it just pulls off
Street N Jeep wonderful. Thanks a lot for the fast reply. I'm going to try that. Cheers
I was expecting him just to smash the window.....kind of dissapointed
What was napoleon dynomite doing there at the end of this video?
Thanks man
Hi, what if I stripped the handle???? Help

is there a easy way to replace that worm gear? my 89 Manche has a gear issues and I can't find a video on replacing it. thanks
IDK but I would just replace the whole window regulator.
I remember you did a mirror replacement for hope floats but I have mirrors with the same adjustment mechanism as the Comanche except the passenger side no longer adjusts. Is there any fixing this? Or should I bite the bullet and swap for the late model mirrors?
I did a video a long time ago on fixing the older mirrors, maybe search bleepinjeep side view mirror
I love WD-40 for a lot of things, but doesn't WD-40 collect dust creating the same problem as before? Well almost the same problem. the dust plugs it up. Aren't you suppose to use something like graphite?
Awsome
WD 40 is not a permanent lubricant. It was invented to act as a water displacement (WD) aid.
Is wd40 better than lithium grease?
idk I'm no engineer

still pretty gnarly looking!

thats a weird one, maybe the computer or somehow the CPS... maybe someone else can chime in as well.
I had a 92 once that did the same thing. I finally took it to our mechanic. He replaced the throttle position sensor and it fixed it. Just my 2 cents.
PB Blast over wd 40
Mine goes half up or half down and then stops 🤦🏻♀️
What can I do to help with my Jeep stealing all my money??
Feed it more money!
Sell it lol only way that it's not going to be in your wallet

Dustin Gould Yes but that’s using it as a penetrant. Not for long term lubrication applications like the window worm.
Sorry - But I don't believe in uncle bumblefuck's theory about spray lubricants. 20 years in the industry has taught me a little different story in experience than he explains.
BROTHER
Question Matt, what do you do when the gears are stripped. I can't find replacement parts. Please don't say replace the door.
Black Hawk International Security replace the door
So my grandpa was using an old truck
Now your Jeep is going to smell like WD40.. and your window is full of it too.
keep the bottom of doors from rusting out tho 👍
Jonny DIY I use WD40 on my beard
Thats the smell of a mans truck!
It counteracts the PB Blaster smell
What if I’d just clicks
Question Matt, what do you do when the gears are stripped. I can't find replacement parts. Please don't say replace the WHOLE door.
Black Hawk International Security replace the WHOLE door
I don't like that one either.
replace the window regulator
Would it be easier to replace the door?
Probably yes.. Hahah.
Keep it up.
Now you need Windex to sponser your next video: how to clean your windows.lol...
this is true
u shoulda taken the speaker out
Oh boy arn't you getting spanked for using WD instead of white grease.
First

Damn that fingernail tho it's got a hurt
hope you get that 500$ from wd40 because some youtuber didnt see a dime from them yet
II use Jig A Loo Garage Door Lubricant. Never Gums up.
Question Matt, what do you do when the gears are stripped. I can't find replacement parts. Please don't say replace the door.
Black Hawk International Security replace the door
That's not the reply I want. Try again. LOL
