A song that relates well to today's music, even though it was a slam against the disco scene back in the day. Also by the mid to late 70s there was a swelling backlash against the excesses of the many tangents that Rock had gone taken and to some extent those excesses only became worse during the 80s.
Every generation has their music hated by people who are 20 or more years older than them. It makes no sense whether we are talking about the 1920s, 1950s, the disco-dominated mid-to-late 70s, or today. Great music is made all the time. It always was, and always will be. Don't be that guy.
I hear that all the time about the music I loved, 70s Yes and ELO ect........ Its all a matter of what you love. Punk killed everything I loved about music.
Today, when you only listen to what you choose for yourself on Spotify or what is chosen for you based on an algorithm vs. hearing what is played randomly on the radio that you have no control over, you have no idea what you may be missing.
The reason the first part of the song is so well known and used in so many movies is because of the movie Risky Business (with Tom Cruise). There’s a really, really famous scene, he dances to the whole song. After that, whenever a movie plays the song they’re referencing that specific scene. (don’t know if this has already been said but I’m not reading 400 comments to find out)
Have you ever heard a song that you loved so much and heard so often, that you began to hate it.....just a little? I love Bob Seger, but this is one of those songs that got soooooooooooooooooo much airplay (and still does) that I just get a little tired of hearing it sometimes. Ok, now that I got that off my chest, good reaction guys! :)
Same. I mentioned, above, that there should be a special category for these songs. I've heard this one so many times that the moment I hear those piano chords, I immediately change the channel. Same with George Thorogood and even AC/DC, for me
"Travelin' Man & Beautiful Loser"is a must you guys! I've been asking for like 2 years respectfully. This is probably my least favorite Seger song and it's still better than 99% of crap out there. Much love 💚💚
Ever have one of those songs that if you never hear again you couldn’t be happier? This is one for me. I have refused offers to play in cover bands where this was on a list they sent to me. Haha
The Muscle Shoals sound is the best! The Swampers AND the Tower of Power horns. You all need to do a special dive into this story - DOZENS of famous artists recorded some of their greatest songs there - Bob Dylan, Percy Sledge, Bob Seger, Paul Simon, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Rolling Stones, Marvin Gaye, Aretha Franklin, Wilson Pickett, The Band, Led Zeppelin, Otis Redding, Jimmy Cliff, The Staple Singers, Santana, Clapton, Boz Scaggs, Allman Brothers, Glen Frey, Jimmy Buffett, Joe Cocker, Jerry Lee Lewis, Linda Rondstadt, Rod Stewart, and more... Just incredible. And thats not counting the country music stars!
Bob Seger is the KING. I took my three grown sons to see him about 8 or 9 years ago in Omaha. At one point Bob was on stage during a solo doing a little dance (mind you he was about 65 years old then) and my youngest son said jokingly "Well he sure can't dance". I replied.....this isn't a Michael Jackson concert!
Guys I saw Bob Seeger at the MGM in Las Vegas in the early 90's. Now prior to that, growing up in Detroit in 60's and 70's Bob Seeger was the sh!t. When I saw him finally, I sang every single song, did not sit the entire time of the concert and cried my eyes out. Best concert ever and I lost my voice for a week after that but was so worth it. Roll me away is next song you should do.... Great reaction.
Sorry, Andy, there was definitely an intense dislike of disco back then--especially after"Disco Duck" came out--and I'm sure Bob was no exception to it. Also consider that when this came out, old time rock and roll was the original wave popular in the fifties and early sixties--stuff by Chuck Berry, Bill Haley, Little Richard, Carl Perkins, Elvis, etc. It's a generational thing--every generation has nostalgia for the music when they were kids, what's modern just doesn't compare. Also this makes me think of an interview I read back in the seventies of Bob Dylan where he claimed he wasn't a rock and roller and really no one was anymore. To him rock and roll was the fifties stuff and what we had in the seventies was just rock.
Great reaction guys. Bob puts on the BEST show. Kathmandu and Rock n Roll Never Forgets. Bob is the man. Many good suggestions. Thanks again for this memory.
A & A always listening to the kind of music that just soothes the soul. Makes me reminisce about the days of old. With that Old Time Rock and Roll. This and Turn the Page are the favorites of Bob's songs that I have heard.
For additional Seger, check out "Roll Me Away" - one of Seger's best. Do the official video to watch him perform. Also go with "Rock and Roll Never Forgets" - The opening track on the "Night Moves" album. It's also the song that he opened his shows with on the "NIght Moves" tour. For a deeper cut, try "The FIre Inside" - It's a bit later than most of his hits but it's great. Also do the official video.
Andy, You mentioned horns when the Sax started playing . Just remember, at the time this came out, old Time Rock-n-Roll to Bob and a lot of us from the seventies was the stuff from the fifties and early sixties. Chuck Berry, Little Richard, Bill Haley and others. Stuff that you guys have barely even touched. Little Richard and Billy Haley. Saxophone was actually incorporated a lot into many 1950's rock-n-roll songs.
It's absolutely mind blowing to watch you guys review THIS track only because it's probably THE most played Bob Seger song EVER and has been played at parties for decades to the point it's almost cliché. So for you guys to hear it with fresh ears is amazing. Not knocking this song BTW. It's a classic for a reason.
In 1978, I was working in the Detroit area. In fact, I was living and working in Ann Arbor - Bob's home town. Lemme tell you, in that time and place Bob Seger was very hot - I mean, surface of the sun hot. The radio dial would burn your fingers if you tried to change the station when one of his tunes was playing. It was an awesome time in an awesome place.
You hit the nail on the head because there was like a R&R vs disco feud going on big time back then, and that’s why he said it. Disco sucks was the anthem back the for the rock and rollers
I love you guys You remind me of my boys when I was introducing them to the same music when they were growing up I was in my early teens when this song came out and it was one of my favorites I'm 55 now
Kathmandu is a banger. Like a Rock is that Rock ballad you've been looking for. And Shame on the Moon is just plain beautiful. Can't miss on any of these.
He lived in my old town. We used to skip school and go sit out on Oakhill rd in front of his house. His driveway was a few hundred feet long. He eventually came out and howled..and we all howled back..then he would yell..OK now! go back to school!
Hey Guys. There's a song that I know you'd really enjoy. It's called Evie pt1 2&3. It's sung by an Australian artist named Stevie Wright. He was the vocalist in an Australian 60s band called "The Easy Beats". The guitarist was George Young the older brother of Malcom and Angus Young from AC/DC. Evie is one of those songs that takes you on an emotional rollercoaster. It's not only brilliantly written lyrically but musically as well. You've just got to listen to it. Cheers ✌🇦🇺
Great song but absolutely played to death! Couldn't escape it, it was everywhere. Country bands, rock bands and every radio station on the planet were playing it.
We came from his town..we used to be able to carry kegs into Pine Knob..did so for Bob shows..his guitar player was / is Drew Abbot..I sent you a song via email of Drew playing with my old friend Jem in the Third Power band..that is where he started.
Whan I was a DJ in 1990 doing weddings and company parties, this song was my ace up the sleeve when folks weren't dancing. It never failed. It's not my personal favorite, but if it makes a crowd dance, then what can you say?
The lead guitarist you're wondering about is Drew Abbott. Check out the band he was in before joining up with Bob called Third Power. There was a lot of great rock & roll coming out of Michigan at the time.
Favorite line "don't take me to a disco, 10 minutes I'll be late for the door". Terrific line at the time. My older sister said I liked disco, I said you would. Another great, "We've Got Tonight".
There's so much that's better than this by Bob. This is extremely commercial, and forever tied to a Tom Cruise movie. Fm radio fodder. Nothing special.
There are so many great songs from Bob Seger and the Silver Bullet Band. I hope you cover more of them. Beautiful Loser Watch Her Strut I edited to add a whole lot of people hated Disco. I was one of them.
Well, you've just been added to the people that go ooh yeah, SEGER and get up to dance when this song comes on in a dive bar. I do wish you'd hit Feels Like A Number.
THE OPENING TRACK ON ( STRANGER IN TOWN ) : ROCK N ROLL NEVER FORGETS, THE MAIN HITS ON IT : THIS SONG OF COURSE, HOLLYWOOD NIGHTS, WE'VE GOT TONIGHT, A BEAUTIFUL SONG :)
Anthem......for those of us that grew up in the '60s and '70s............and it will be forever connected to Tom Cruise's breakout film "Risky Business" for that specific scene!
A song that relates well to today's music, even though it was a slam against the disco scene back in the day. Also by the mid to late 70s there was a swelling backlash against the excesses of the many tangents that Rock had gone taken and to some extent those excesses only became worse during the 80s.
‘Corporate rock’
Boring and targeted music, yet I feel nostalgic when listening to it.
Every generation has their music hated by people who are 20 or more years older than them. It makes no sense whether we are talking about the 1920s, 1950s, the disco-dominated mid-to-late 70s, or today. Great music is made all the time. It always was, and always will be. Don't be that guy.
Tom Cruise coming out in his tightly whitey's
Everyone is entitled to an opinion.
I hear that all the time about the music I loved, 70s Yes and ELO ect........ Its all a matter of what you love. Punk killed everything I loved about music.
"Today's music ain't got the same soul. I like that old time Rock n Roll." True story.
“Mainstreet” is probably my favorite song by Bob Segar! Great guitar and storytelling! I’m sure you guys would love it!
Seger not Segar!
All I can say is "Tom Cruise..Risky Business" ... ICONIC 🕺📽
Pretty sure every song Bob Seger put out was a hit!!! Timeless, baby! 😍🤩
“Rock ‘n Roll Never Forgets.”
This is great and really made the movie “Risky Business” to me, but my favorite of Bob’s is “Katmandu.”
hollywood nights was good too
@@happywebster7151
Katmandu is dope.
@@gregrambo606 agreed.
I wish it wasn’t in Risky Bus. I see Tom Cruise dancing in his tighty whities.
Me too
Saw this man 7 times, & each time was better than the time before ! Love this guy.
Have you guys done “Still the Same” or “Rock & Roll Never Forgets”? Some of my favorite Seger cuts.
definitely Rock & Roll Never Forgets!
Also.....KATMANDU......nobody seems to react to that one.
I love “Still the Same” - yes!!! 👏🏻👏🏻
I saw him first in 1978, and then again in 2019. Both shows rocked! RIP Alto Reed 🎷
The lyrics to this song is my "Mission Statement" about music.......PERIOD! God bless Bob Seager.
You’ve seriously never heard this song before??? How is that possible? Lol
Today, when you only listen to what you choose for yourself on Spotify or what is chosen for you based on an algorithm vs. hearing what is played randomly on the radio that you have no control over, you have no idea what you may be missing.
Saw Bob Seger live in 79
What a concert!!!!!
Really Great live…😎🤘
"Mainstreet" and "Shame on The Moon" need a listen. Thanks, guys.
Mainatreet has the tastiest guitar.
Cannot possibly have rock ‘n roll without the sax and the percussion? Perfectly on point! Yeah, Bob Seger always on my playlist!
my cousin was back up drummer for Bob back in b the 70's. played at our high school! Detroit G O A T. 🔥🙌🏻
Oh, my, you've never seen Risky Business.
Andy and Alex are cavemen. They were born in a cave. They currently live in a cave, and they will die in a cave!🤣
Just an FYI guys, a saxophone is not a horn. It's considered a woodwind instrument as it uses a reed in the mouthpiece to play.
The reason the first part of the song is so well known and used in so many movies is because of the movie Risky Business (with Tom Cruise). There’s a really, really famous scene, he dances to the whole song. After that, whenever a movie plays the song they’re referencing that specific scene.

I saw Bob Seger when I was in high school and it was one of the best concerts I’ve been too.
How could you have gotten through life without hearing this song?

That "now it's a sickening song" for me is, "Layla."
This is one that still will get the dance floor filled to overflowing in 2022....of course, I'm in central PA...
"Travelin' Man & Beautiful Loser"is a must you guys! I've been asking for like 2 years respectfully. This is probably my least favorite Seger song and it's still better than 99% of crap out there. Much love 💚💚
I agree with those songs but I think they already did those on Patreon.
@@bradsense7431 Thanks, I'll look into it.
Great suggestions. Beautiful Loser... no words.
They did the whole Live Bullet album on Patreon.
Im with you. Love Seger, not this song.

I’m from Detroit originally and Seger is the soundtrack of my life! Loves Seger!
Two words: 'Risky Business'
....this song is highlighted in that movie.
So funny. Great tune to uplift rock n roll .
"Sometimes, Joel, you just gotta say..."

It just was not a dance without dancing to Bob Seger and the Silver Bullet Band and this song. Best ever.
We did dance to in a disco!!
THE GREATEST GENERATION WAS ROCKING OUT AT THE DISCO AND BOB SEGER!

Roll Me Away is another great one!

Rock and roll is a mixture of blues and country.

Bob Seger "Beautiful Loser"...A MUST HEAR Classic..Truth!!
EVERYBODY got up to dance when this came on, no matter what bar was playing it. Welcome back to late 70s
Played at every wedding/ party I went to back in the day.
This one and Turn the Page are my very top Bob Seger songs. Doesn't get much better than these two.
Shame On The Moon is a work of art.
Recorded at Muscle Shoals. Their groove was/is legendary.
ROCK & ROLL NEVER FORGETS.
Bob Segar is someone you don't hear enough of these days. You used to not be able to escape his songs. Man, I still remember when this song was new.
Other than Bob Seger’s #1 hit “Shakedown,” this is the most polarizing Top 40 single of Bob’s career.

"Hollywood Nights" , "Katmandu" and "Get out of Denver". Upbeat rockers from Bob Seger.
