    This actually holds some water... back in the early days of drag racing, when engines were smaller, and cars were heavier, several guys figured out that running an 80 pound flywheel, nearly four times what a stock one weighs, really helped get the load rolling and kept the RPM drop off the line to a minimum.

      There were a bunch of buses that employed flywheels as energy storage devices which were spun up using electric motors, they're more common as a static energy storage medium focusing on ultra-high RPM (50-100+krpm) lightweight flywheels often retained by non-contact magnetic bearings and inside sealed hydrogen-filled containers to reduce energy loss from air resistance.

      Really.... Had to be a hell of a powerful clutch...and other parts as well.
      Cause doing that is a terrible idea
      It would actually take longer, for an engine to rev up with a over weight fly wheel flex plate...

      @@alyx6427 With magnetic bearings it makes sense because there's fewer surfaces making contact that could potentially produce friction, but even then pure hydrogen isn't going to ignite without enough oxygen present and I imagine they're purged pretty effectively before being sealed. Besides Helium tends to be more expensive, denser and produces more fluid resistance.

      The solution.....yeah high cost but keeps everyone alive....the brush and branches and logs should only be fed into it by someone in a skid steer. In my town a few years ago a teenager went through one, first day on the job. Right in the other side of the suburb I grew up in. Nice place. Definitely comes up every time someone mentions wood chippers. :-/

    • @Avetho
      @Avetho 2 роки тому +21

      I think you could imagine the weight of the flywheel as the equal-weighted equivalent of if the stock flywheel suddenly weighed 1 ton. So the weight is spaced out as a massive ring that only weighs the same pounds as the stock flywheel, but the moment of inertia is so much bigger since the weight is far away from the axis of rotation. Basically, a flywheel with more mass farther from the crankshaft has a higher "inertial mass" than one with mass closer to the middle. Racing flywheels remove mass all around and then shift some of the remaining mass to the outside, so its lighter in vehicle weight overall, and a bit lighter in inertia for faster rev speed. Just imagine this flywheel as having a radius as big as a soccer field or something XD

    • @deusexaethera
      @deusexaethera 2 роки тому +18

      It almost certainly doesn't add mass to the car, because it's doubtful the game designers ever considered the usage of a flywheel so heavy. I doubt other small components like gears are factored into the weight on an individual basis either.

    • @DigitalJedi
      @DigitalJedi 2 роки тому +1

      @@deusexaethera Different transmissions, engines, and drive line components do affect the weight of the vehicle. However, I believe this is being done with a mod, as I have never found a 1-ton flywheel in my vanilla game. In that case MOI and mass could be adjusted separately, and the physics engine will just take those numbers as a fact.

    You should put on a locked diff. On that last run one of the wheels was not gripping up (shown by the tread line that ran all the way down the track), and adding a locked diff should keep the wheels spinning together and prevent that. Also maybe add a wheelie bar so that it stays put on launch and you get a good start.

    The only reason this isnt done in real life( besides physical size limitations) was parts that could withstand the shock load of that much stored energy. Axles, ujoints, transmissions all would turn to a pile of scrap instantly. They tried to make a flywheel bus at one point, it would stop and at each bus stop there was an electric motor to spin up the flywheel some, but the issue was there wasnt a clutch, or transmission built that could take the power

    • @zootopiaondvd8081

      So I did some math that is probably incorrect and I found that one ton of osmium, which is the densest element, would be about 40,159cm3 per ton or 2450in3. this is pretty unfeasible to put in a car, along with the fact that osmium is one of the rarest element on earth...so yeah. despite this you could probably do fancy stuff with the flywheel since I think velocity is more important than weight for inertia, so you could get a similar effect with less weight as long as its spinning faster. disclaimer i know basically nothing about flywheels so take everything i say with many grains of salt

      @DigitalJedi 2 роки тому

      @@TimSmith-vl4qk I think you left caps lock on man. But to address the point of this, you wouldn't get dust to behave like a fluid in an engine. Even if you can get the air-fuel mix right for a dust explosion, which is probably what you are thinking of, moving that mixture with active components like a fuel pump, or even just the vacuum of an open intake valve, would present issues as the dust sticks to surfaces and both restricts flow and is effectively removed from the explodable material in the cylinder.

    • @CATASTEROID934
      @CATASTEROID934 2 роки тому

      You'd find that keeping the dust fluidised would be difficult, especially within the confines of a vehicle that can't have the kind of enormous static blowers that fluidised bed reactors that use the same concept to turn solid beads coated in a catalyst to perform chemical reactions on liquids in the petrochemical industry. Since you'd have to keep the dust entrained in air there would be the risk of an explosive fuel/air mixture forming in the feed lines and any hot smoldering embers or the significant risk of static discharge from friction between fast-flowing dust grains would turn the fuel feed lines into a potential fuel-air bomb with the steel structure beneath the passengers' feet acting like the fragmentation liner on a frag grenade. The increased energy density of solid fuels over liquid fuels is very attractive but it's not usually enough of a gain to warrant developing a new type of engine and ancillary equipment then purchasing dedicated tooling to manufacture that equipment when it doesn't represent enough of an advantage over competing conventional liquid-fuelled engines. There's also the issue with coal having non-zero ash content and that ash can be both highly abrasive and produces corrosive solutions when exposed to moisture which would rapidly corrode carbon steel components and it potentially can melt into an even more abrasive glass/clinker at temperatures momentarily experienced in the cylinders, it would also stick to everything and bring that lovely coking problem turbochargers experience to the entirety of the components that the fuel would meet.
      That said, you could just put the coal into a coal gasifier and run a conventional four-stroke gasoline engine with the carbon monoxide produced. The equipment is bulky but it'll take wood, coal and other solid fuels and turn it into coal/wood gas which can be immediately used in unmodified four-stroke gasoline engines.
