Hi guys, I've sailed aboard a Tayana 37 that belonged to a former member of my yacht club. A few insights as his boat was a 1981 as well. Takes a lot of wind to get her moving, heels like a sob in anything over 12-15 knots, tends to be wet, has extremely small cockpit for lounging. If you're concerned about your knees, access to below is very steep and if memory serves me, about 6 or 7 steps. Lots of exterior wood on his model, even without teak decks. The bilge sump is extremely deep making it difficult to mount a pump. These are just my observations for your info. Good luck shopping.

Guys, check out Pearson 365. These are ketch rig and have a shower stall. The Pearson 367 is the cutter rig with similar.

In between the two boats, I would lean toward the Tartan 37 as I own a Tartan 34 Classic. When I crossed the Atlantic towards the Azores, I passed a Tayana 37 ten days in my crossing and they arrived three days after me. The Tayana has a lot of wood to take care... The Tartan 37 has a single Quarter berth but not a separate cabin. For your needs, I would look at a 40 - 44 feet boat. Good searching, Cheers, Richard.

Good luck. I hope you find something you like. Double enders (canoe sterns) are they way to go.

My uncle had a Tartan 37. Sailed OK, but it was designed to a weird rating rule -- the IOR I think -- so it wasn't as fast as one might expect. Interior was nice but the wood used below was very dark so the whole interior seemed dark to me. Tartans were considered good quality.
Many sailors seem to believe old full-keel designs were the best for seakeeping but like your Alberg they are often squirrely downwind and in quartering seas. I think newer designs with a separate rudder are far faster and easier to handle. I vaguely recall the Whitby 42 was considered a good sailing boat -- it may have been designed by Ted Brewer.
You may want to avoid double-enders like the Tayana that were intended to appeal to round-the-world folks. Mainly, they usually have tiny cockpits and that is where you spend much of your time. Cockpit space and comfort should be high on your list of must-haves.

I agree with the Tartans feeling dark. But the Alberg had that same problem originally and we managed to combat it without losing the overall “vintage” feel so I feel like we could probably manage the same.
I think my biggest complaint about the Alberg that we didn’t list in this video is just how far forward the rudder is. It makes the boat very difficult to control in high current and any waves aft of the beam.
As far as cockpit space goes we are defiantly looking for something on the more spacious side. I had seen the photos of how small the double enders are but until you actually step on one 😳 They really are tiny especially in the 35-40 ft range!
      Thanks for watching!

There is a sweet Pacific Seacraft 37 in Stuart but out of your price range. Plus that size has a weird bed which I don't care for.
My other suggestion was going to be a Tayana 37. Weak areas that are not visible are the bulkheads may be rotten and the chain plates may have crevice corrosion.
The Bristol 40 is very narrow and greatly lacking on storage space.
Endeavor boats are cheaply built. I had to only look at one to move along to other companies.
Corbin 39s were usually sold as kits so the quality of any given boat will vary quite a bit. I often visited a friend who had one and enjoyed the layout.

Good to know about the Tayanas! I agree with all your other points. We had been in contact with a seller about a Corbin that was for sale in Rhode Island. It was out of our price range and needed a far bit in terms of rigging and sails so we passed it over but it had a very nice interior, but I’ve seen pictures of others that were terrifying on the inside 😂

Get a trawler and quit being uncomfortable 90 percent of the time. Your dog will love you for it.
