True, just noticed that watching back the early seasons, Clark is kind of an asshole towards Lex who is nothing but the most benevolent friend towards him
I wouldn’t call it standoffish, as such, but he was definitely guarded. Because of his parents always impressing upon him the need to keep his secret, Clark wouldn’t risk letting anyone in at this stage of his life - particularly Lex and Lana. It destroyed both of them. And as much as I like the Kents and know they meant well, it was only after Clark was away from their influence that he slowly learned to trust people (Chloe, Lois, Oliver, the rest of the League).

I am not a fan of fanfic but someone did write an interesting idea on how they could still give us the nemesis Lex from the comics, it basically meant this Lex dying at the hands of otherworld Lex & good Lex basically died protecting Clark's secret. He would have had Tess's fate in the final episode.*

Lex was always a better friend to Clark than Clark was to Lex. Clark was an arrogant, secretive and lying manipulator. Lex just wanted to be loved.
