    the gear ratio between the front sprocket and rear gears is what you're after. 48/11 is like a 4.36 gear ratio. for every 1 rotation of the front, the wheel will spin 4.36 times. you can figure out exactly what gear ratio you need to maintain a reasonable pedal rpm by taking your tire ( not wheel) circumference and divide that by a mile to see how many rotations you need to go 1 mile. then using your target mph, you can calc what wheel rpm you need. then using your gear ratio, figure out what pedal rpm you will have at that speed.... or solve for the ratio while using a max pedal rpm that's set by you.
    ex. xpeak has a tire diameter of 29". it's a 26x4 fat tire. c = πd = π29 = 91"
    1 mile = 63360" . 63360 / 91 = 696.26 rotations per mile. so if you did that many rotations of the wheel in 1 hour you'd go 1 mph. so divide by 60 to get rotations per minute. 11.6 rpm of the rear tire to go 1 mph. it's then simple to calc the rpm at any speed.
    20mph is 20 times faster so 20 x 11.6 = 232 rpm
    28 x 11.6 = 325 rpm.
    now let's assume you have a 48tooth crank and the 11 tooth rear and you like this setup doing 28mph.
    48/11 = 4.36
    325 / 4.36 = pedal rpm = 74.54
    that's close (a little faster) than 1 rotation per second. 1.24 rps
    now if that is as fast as you want to reasonably pedal, you can figure out the gear ratio you would need to keep that pedal rpm given your tire size for any bike.
    if you have 14 tooth rear and 48 crank, your ratio is 3.42. so at 28mph, 325 / 3.42 = 95 rpm or 1.59 rps
    that's 22% faster pedaling.
    that's the difference between 11 and 14 tooth rear gearing if everything else is the same. pretty significant.
    so what about 52 tooth crank to upgrade 14 teeth rears?
    52/14 = 3.71 325 / 3.71 = 87.6 , / 60 = 1.46 rps. this is 15% faster pedaling than 11 tooth. better than 22 but not within single digits of 11 tooth.
    52 tooth crank with 11 rear? 8.4% slower pedaling needed
    ok, this comment is long enough.

    I have the Mokwheel Basalt, and I just changed the cassette. I got it and the tool on amazon for like 40 bucks, now I can pedal 30mph and no ghost pedaling, it's easy to change the gearing on any bike.

    Want to back what Richard said, ghost peddling really felt horrible and I changed my Freewheel to get rid of it.
    If you can't peddle get a cadence sensor. The Aventon Level 2 torque sensor bike we just got doesn't ghost peddle.

    I know this is very important but for me I have neuropathy in my feet. I just want a strong enough motor and a throttle. I'm tempted to buy a Jackrabbit mini ebike but I'm concerned about balance issues. So most likely will get a trike. I like the simplicity of a single speed since I'll be doing throttle only on flat roads. My retirement "car." My biggest concern is getting quality so that it'll last more than a decade.

      It's possible. My neighbor has been riding a Radpower Mini since 2016. The battery still charges to 80%. I know they don't make them anymore. He doesn't own a car and got 1900 miles out of the original tires.

    Thank you Richard for the excellent explanation. I had no idea about this before I made my purchase. Fortunately when I bought my first (only) e-bike last year, I bought an Aventon. They have been in business a long time. I believe they sold non e-bikes for years with a different name which I can’t recall.
    I looked up the specs. 12-32T, 8 Speed. I guess this is good?
    I’ve reached 29 mph. When using high gears, there’s no ghosting.

    Please don't wave the camera around so much, it was making me feel slightly sick!
    My tip - don't buy an e-bike with derailleurs at all. Go for hub gears.

    Great video Richard, wish these company's listed those in the specs.
    Wonder what the chances are of finding a trike with an 11/32 ratio and how you'd find out...
    Thanx Richard

    • @EbikeReviews
      @EbikeReviews  6 місяців тому +1

      Hey John, well, a trike wouldn't or shouldn't go faster than 20 mph, so actually the standard 14/28 would be fine. Unless you want a trike to go 25-29? To find out you just have to poor over the specs and/or ask the company.

    Hi, Richard. I'd just like to point out that there's a WORLD of difference between the 11 and the 14 tooth rear sprockets that is aside from the mechanical (dis)advantages of each: the 11 tooth gear is exclusively on the cassette hub while the 14 tooth sprocket is usually fit on the freewheel hub. These hubs are BY NO MEANS interchangeable. If anyone is contemplating a rear drive gear changeover, they'd best be doing their research beforehand.

    This is a good point. I've had 2 bikes. The first one was a Rad bike. The one I have now is a Magicycle Deer 20. I changed out the Freewheel on both. I resisted for quite awhile on my Deer 20 because for most part it was a good ride at 20 mph or below. I just could not stand it any more for the times I wanted to go in the higher PAS settings just spinning the pedals. The 28-11 a much better experience than the stock 28-14. It should definitely be standard on a bike like my Deer 20.

    I’m Don from Hawthorne, Florida. I have a new 2024 Himiway Cruiser step-thru. I’ve unlocked the settings so that the bike will go the top speed of 25 mph. The bike has a 14-28 cassette on the rear hub and a large chain crank set. I don’t have any issues with “ghost peddling”. I still have plenty of resistance in the petals even at the top speed of 25 mph. I haven’t yet counted how many teeth is on the crank set. But I think it would be in the 50s. What do you think?

    • @EbikeReviews
      @EbikeReviews  6 місяців тому +1

      Yep, most likely its a 51-53 crank, which will definitely help reduce or in your case of 25mph max speed, eliminate the ghost. I have a 52t I will be installing on this bike soon to show how it can be eliminated or reduced for a better riding experience. Oh, and I also have a new Himiway coming on Tuesday that I purchased. Its the D5 Pro. Can't wait to get it.

      Oh…btw when I received my bike, Himiway also sent me a package of gifts. Most were Himiway branded of course. No one on UA-cam said anything about a package of gifts, and accessories that I could get for buying their product. I was blown away!!

    Interesting video
    I have a 12-32 with a 54 th big sprocket cadence sensor
    I have no ghost pedaling at full output at top speed

    • @cellsafemode
      @cellsafemode 6 місяців тому +1

      if you see my overly detailed comment, the math if we assume the same tire size comparing 11 rear and 48 front gears.... your setup is resulting in 3% slower pedaling for a given speed.
      so 12:54 is effectively equivalent to 11:48.
      I'm more of a fan of not pedaling much or that fast if I'm ebiking around.

    Do Level 2 and Level 3 ebikes use different gear sets?

    • @cellsafemode
      @cellsafemode 6 місяців тому

      no. gear sets and ebike levels are totally unrelated.

    • @wes326
      @wes326 6 місяців тому

      @@cellsafemode I was thinking that because you ran out of gears at 20 mph with a 14-tooth sprocket, that would correspond with a class 2 ebike top speed. Otherwise, pretty poor execution by the ebike companies.

    • @cellsafemode
      @cellsafemode 6 місяців тому

      @@wes326 it's more a result of just blindly using what made sense for regular amish bikes that are cheap.
      to better cover ebikes without something more custom, you would need 9 speeds to have the low and high gear you want.
      but ebikes don't necessarily need gears spaced out like amish bikes. it's going to take some risk to do things different and see what works best with ebike riders... but anything custom or lower volume is going to cost more. and god forbid anything reduce profit on a product you're buying low made by another company and selling high in a different country while needing to undercut everyone else doing the same thing with basically the same product.
