  • AMERICAN FICTION is Cord Jefferson's hilarious directorial debut, which confronts our culture’s obsession with reducing people to outrageous stereotypes. Jeffrey Wright stars as Monk, a frustrated novelist who’s fed up with the establishment profiting from “Black” entertainment that relies on tired and offensive tropes. To prove his point, Monk uses a pen name to write an outlandish “Black” book of his own, a book that propels him to the heart of hypocrisy and the madness he claims to disdain.

Wright and Ortiz have such great back-and-forth in this movie, even just glancing at each other.

Very true, Ortiz is a very underrated actor, he always will be Guajiro (Carlito’s Way)

That was where the movie lost me a little bit, we'd established by that point he needed the money for his mother, would make no sense for him to try to sabotage the whole thing.

A great scene from a great film, loved all the scenes with Wright and Ortiz. Wright's internal fight with the hatred for the stereotype and the need to play the part, just genius writing by Jefferson. This was a great film with great acting and writing.

I'm white, but I am a butch lesbian trying to be a writer and i've gotten feedback that my lesbian protagonist or her bi love interest weren't "presenting" as "queer" enough. 😬 lol this movie was fantastic, I could really relate! It gave me a lot to think about.
