You were a life saver. Did the install tonight and this video answered more than one head scratcher! Thank you!
That is awesome! Rally great to hear it was helpful for your install.
Nice looking lights Rick, now you will be able to spot those coyotes out there! Back in the 70's I used Hella headlights for my Rabbit, Rabbit GTI, and Scirocco. I used the H4 replacement units both round and square and changed the bulbs from 55/60 watt to 55/100 watt low and high beam. I never needed relays even! What a difference the lights made and on low beam not blinding to on coming traffic but yes to the traffic with the high beams on. Came in handy driving through the New Jersey Pine Barrens at night with the occasional deer!
Thank Dave! Nice use of the lights on your old car. Very cool.
Great install. Those look really good on the front bar.
Thank you my friend! It was a long and tedious one, but I like the look.
Omg. This helped me so much on the installation on my Focus ST
That's awesome! Glad it helped.
New viewer here. Just subscribed. My wife has 2018 Crosstrek and loves it. I drive the 18 Outback. Nice videos. Thanks
Thanks so much John! Much appreciated.
Morning Rick! Cheer 🍻
HI Stanley. Cheers my friend.
Rick awesome video, and thanks for the shoutout! Those look awesome on there! I’m kinda jealous of that whole setup now 😁
Thank You Mike! I put you on my front page as well so people can find you. I think I may take most of the bottom wiring apart and soldering them together. I had the right side butt connector come apart twice while installing. :)
I might do the same thing, I was pretty hasty with mine but when I add 2 more I’m going to redo all of it
good choice on mounting on the outside
Thank you Ryan!
Hi Rick, I would recommend that you get the Hella 500 grille covers from Amazon for your lights (inexpensive). They protect when driving and you don't have to take them off when you want to use the lights as they won't melt the covers since it's an open design. Plus they look awesome! I did for mine! It got annoying having to take the plastic covers off whenever I wanted to use the lights. Greato as usual! Cheers!
Thanks Hector and a great idea. I like the look of the covers, but was thinking it might be a pain to have to take covers on and off. I will check into them. Thank you very much!
Excellent video Rick. I don’t really care for the rounded Rally style driving lights such as yours, or the KC Hilites, I prefer a slim lightbar, but excellent video explaining everything. I’m thinking of adding a lightbar to my LPAventure bull bar when I get it and your video properly explains how to wire it up to switches and power. Most people don’t really explain that crucial part. Thank you for that (I know jack about wiring and electrical) 😂
Also, for people that probably wanna use these everyday, it’s actually illegal in most areas to have more than two sets of lights on (headlights and fog lights) so lights like this should be used just for true off road use. Unless it’s snowing bad or raining hard, then these could come in handy.
Hey John, thank you very much....To be honest I don't know much about wiring either...just enough to get me into trouble. LOL Have a good weekend.
Absolutely love the look of my new Hellas! Thanks for the video. Really helped guide the install. Sliding the switch wires through the rubber grommet was a bitch though, haha.
Sweet! Glad it was helpful.

Nice!!!
Thank you brother.
On my 2013, the rally light bar sits too close to the bumper and doesn't have space for deep lights, so I had to use spacers. The LPAdventure bar on a 2018+ looks nice and doesn't have the same issue I had. I have the SSD bar on my 2013
Thank you! Trying to tighten the lights was a little tricky with the small silver plate on there...
Hi Rick, I'm not considered an expert but I worked in this branch. For the outside where you used the PVC tube. There is one which is heat resistent, i would recommend that one, color is gray. Also tape you should get the gray tape. Irrax tape VZ. Probably you have seen this on the wire harness in the engine bay.
Very cool! Thank you for the suggestions as I am definitely not an expert. I actually made the decision yesterday to undo the lower connections and solder them then heat shrink them for better protection. Those butt connectors are a little suspect. Thank you again for the help...very appreciated.
If you have the chance for other connectors get Tyco brand. Also gray. Gray is essential under the hood even though is not that much heat there. Better safe than sorry ; always enjoy watching you working on the Crosstrek. Cheers !
Hey Rick I'm trying to install PIAA lights and they require 12mm (1/2") mounting holes. I'd need to significantly widen the holes like you did. I hate destructive modifications. In other words, once you make the holes wider that's it...no going back. Was it worth it for you? Also did the holes start to rust since the powder coat is removed when drilling?
I agree...a bit on the scary side. :) No rust at this point. You could spray a touch of clear coat on there after you drill just to be sure. I did that when I installed my hitch and it has worked great.
Looks like I may be leaving Subaru completely now. Pretty much decided on a model 3 now. Gonna get it after my holiday trip this year and hopefully the crosstrek still has good resale, and maybe Tesla partnering with a company to allow trade ins
That will be a big change for you and hope it works out well! Thanks for all of your help and comments around here and hope you stop by now and then. Are you going for the heavily upgraded Tesla with ludicrous mode. :) That would be fun.
@@AZdroptop Wish I could afford that one. But $2100 a month is too much for me.. Im going for the model 3 performance which is still a 3.2 0-60. Almost as fast as a new z06
Very cool. The money they want for the crazy fast one is nuts for sure and a 3.2 0 to 60 is worth cheering about. :) Good times. Hope you love it.
Oh my Rick! I wish you had fitted led lights. They are far superior. You're high beam are better than those spot lights. It should be the other way around. My leds shine 1 kilometer up the road and that includes both sides of the road and to top of trees. But the car is looking very mean now with that bar. Looks really good. Can't wait to see it with a lift. I know you'll do it lol. Here in Australia the lights have to be wired to the high beam. So you can't accidentally turn them on. Law might be different there.
LED's are definitely better, but I decided in the end to just to the Hella's. Inexpensive alternative and in all honesty I probably will not use them all that much. I believe they are supposed to be connected to the high beam here as well, but I wanted the ability to turn them on when I wanted. :) As to the lift...you are probably right on that one. LOL. Cheers my friend.
@@AZdroptop Just wanted to mention if you received your recall notice for the Harman Kardon audio system display software. It says it is intended to ensure the proper operation of your vehicle's Harman Kardon infotainment system. Didn't call my dealer yet. Like the lights, looks good.
Hey brother, I did indeed. I am a little nervous to have them update it since it is working so well lately. :) I will probably have them do it at my next oil change here in a couple thousand miles.
Those are great with 130 watt bulbs. No they don’t melt, yes u need heavier wiring.
I really liked the look of these, but they were not very bright in stock form. We have exchanged them for some LED's. My son was backed into and damaged one of them.
The thing i want to ask Rick, is how much are you enjoying the crosstrek? how much fun are you having owning and running it.
I'm guessing that if you are willing to work around its quirks then its worth it.
Love it. No complaints really.
Rick did you consider a LED light bar across the front ?
Hi DrDennis, yep, but I like the look of the old school rounds lights and I didn't put them on for a ton of extra light. The stock headlights on the Limited are excellent, especially the Brights.
I have 4 of the same lights you have on yours, Rick. How do you feel about the brightness of them? Even with 4 of them, I'm a bit underwhelmed with their performance. They look great aesthetically, but they don't seem as bright as I was hoping for.
I also experienced both relays failing and getting stuck in the on position, I don't know if I might have just ended up with a bad batch of relays or if Hella just makes terrible relays. The lenses also don't hold up like I was hoping, ended up with 2 holes in two of the lights on our first road trip.
Hi Tyson thanks for your comment. I have had a couple of folks comment that they thought the lights didn't look very bright as well...I guess I wasn't expecting a lot from them and kind of figured they would be more on the level of fog lights especially after watching a few videos on them and I guess they are a little underwhelming. I hear there is a HID upgrade you can do to them? The good thing is I guess is that the stock lights are pretty bright especially the high beams. How long have you had them now?
I agree that they look great and the price was right for sure. :) I bet the 4 lights on your car look really nice...not good to hear you had so many problems with them...hopefully mine will do ok. Tonight I went ahead and took the wires apart at the lights and soldered them instead of using the butt connections. I just didn't feel comfortable with them after one of them came apart twice while installing. First time soldering so we shall se what happens lol. At least they worked again. Cheers bro.
@@AZdroptop That's fair, if you're using them like fog lights. Ill have to look into the HID upgrade. The aftermarket relays seem to be good so far, I must have just had a bad batch of them.
I hope they continue to work well. Do you noticed any bad power draw on the car with 4 lights?
@@AZdroptop there is deffinetley a big draw using 4 of them. You can tell when they are turned on when I'm at idle. Not so much when actually driving.
Very cool. Did you end up doing 2 separate switches or can you run them into one? I ended up taking the connections apart at the lights yesterday and then soldered them together....first time soldering so that was interesting...:) but they seemed a little brighter sitting out front last night. I also adjusted them a little so that could be part of it as well.
From my experience with external lights you should have used heat shrink wrap and not electrical tape to cover those connections.
Thanks Scott. I actually took the connections apart at the lights and redid them with solder and heat shrink. I should have done it that way from the beginning. Cheers and thank you for watching.
They look great. Did you end up installing the switch or just hang it?
Thank you Deb! Great to hear from you. So far just have the switch hanging there. :) I am going to try and wire the switch to the fuse panel for power instead of the battery...I have already melted the covers on accident of course...turned them on not knowing it. And I left them on last night for awhile after testing them out. LOL. I need help Deb. :) Have a great weekend.
Rick, I admire your attempting this project. My one and only fog light installation was on a beater 1970 Capri when in high school. It wasn’t pretty but it worked. Maybe your buddy at the dealership can point you to a power source that would shut them off when your headlights go off (?)
That's Great! You nailed it though as "it worked" is all that matters especially in High school. :) I am hoping I can figure out how to get power from the Fuse box...looks pretty straight forward, but knowing me it will not be.
You have a link of the front light bar. Also how did the Hella 500 relays holding out some ppl say they flicker to buy an extra one
The front bar is from lpaventure.com They have a lot of nice stuff. I had one relay go bad very quickly, but the other has lasted through out. They are not super bright, but look good and do add a little bit of illumination.
@@AZdroptop Thanks! Hey Rick what do u think of the hood lights?
Hood lights? From LP? They would be helpful off roading for sure.
Hey Rick I want to buy the same wheel set up. Tire rack bundle comes out to $1200. I would just install at the local pep boys. How did you go about it?looking for guidance
Very cool. I priced the at tire rack and they came out about $150 to $200 cheaper than going with my local discount tire, but I didn't like their warranty as well. It is through a 3rd party and you have to send a tire in instead of just going to a local shop. Turns out at the time I bought mine from Discount they had a credit card deal going on where you got back $50 for buying wheels and $50 for buying tires so I came out only about $100 more than tire rack so I just bought them from Discount. The card was no interest for 12 months, maybe 18, and I just paid it off.
Are you going with new TPMS sensors? Or swapping over the old ones? Let me know if you come up with other questions...happy to help.
Rick Hutton , thanks. Watched all your Crosstrek videos. Going to use the old tpms on the new wheels.
Perfecto! Send some pics when you get her all suited up with the new set up! Have a good weekend.
Could you not have tapped it into the fuse box instead?
HI Michael, I did end up using a fuse tap in the end. Here is the video if you would like to check it out. Thank you for watching.ua-cam.com/video/mz_3am6yOVs/v-deo.html
If that a skid plate on the bottom of your car?
Yes it is. It is from LPAventure and you will need their small front bar as we'll if you decide to do the skid plate. Here are a couple of video I did of the install. ua-cam.com/video/U-8AdoNHEmc/v-deo.html

Hi Rick, any reason why you didn't wire the switch to switched ignition?
The main reason I did not do it that way is I honestly could not find out how to do it. Do you mean to a spot in the fuse box? I still have the wires hanging before I actually put the switch somewhere because I would like the lights to only come on when the ignition is on. Need some help on that part....The way they describe in the instructions is the splice into the high beam so them only come on with the brights. I like that I can turn them on at anytime, but don't like that I can forget I have them on and walk away from the car. :)
@@AZdroptop I haven't messed with this on a Subaru, but you should be able to take the highbeam wire from the Hella kit, and wire that to a 12v add‐a‐circuit fuse tap and plug that right into the existing fuse socket for ignition without hacking any wiring. I had to do this with an older VW when I installed a new radio as German engineering/electonics don't make sense half the time lol. I will see if I can find anything on google with Subaru's tonight.
I think that is spot on...thanks you! I am thinking if I remove the green wire that goes to the battery and plug it into the Fuse panel for power when the ignition is on I should be good to go? That way it only has power when on and that will save me from melting anymore covers or killing my battery. :) I need a babysitter for sure. LOL I think I'll give it a shot here soon and let you know. Have a good weekend.
@@AZdroptop Yeah the green wire to the fuse tap, into whatever socket powers accessory or an open socket. I found this on Tacoma world and should do the trick.
www.tacomaworld.com/threads/diy-wiring-after-market-lights.6525/
Let me know how it works out.
Thank you my friend! I will check it out and let you know. Awesome that you took the time to share the info.
That's odd. My old Hella 500s are way brighter... A loose connection or maybe it's just that way on camera...?
HI Damon, not sure honestly. From other videos I have seen they are similarly bright but I do not have previous experience with Hella's.
You should have gone with PIAA or Baja Designs LED lights.
Thanks.
Oops, hit enter and wasn't done. :) I considered LED, but I went with the Hella's because of the look and cost to be honest. I don't feel like the car needs anymore light, stock set up is pretty good on the Limited, but thought they would be a nice addition.
Has this car been to the Scottsdale pavilion?
Hi Joe, It is possible that i have been there, but it would have been a number of months ago. Do I have a twin up in Phoenix?
@@AZdroptop It has been several months since I have been there as well but the thing I remember is that cool az emblem you have and I remember it on a crosstrek.
Oh cool. It very well may have been me then. We do go up to Phoenix now and then but I can't remember for sure when the last time was exactly. :)
Just talking with my wife about it and it may have been last June? We went to the mall to pick up some things before flying out the follow day. Good thing someone in my family can remember stuff. ha ha.
@@AZdroptop yeah that sounds about right for when I saw it
Did you lift it?
No lift yet Richard...still considering options.
Me too..
So many options out there for sure. If I do a lift I will most likely go with LP aventure's 1.5. They make really nice stuff and it has all been tested for safety etc. And their customer service has been really good so far.
@@AZdroptop I think this is the route I am about to take. LP seems to be the best. Works with eyesight. With steering headlights. Not too tall of a lift either. just in the sweet spot. Take it easy
Hi Rick, yeah I'm not impressed with your new lights. They look nice off, not very bright when on.
Hi Rick, they are about what I expected and definitely not that bright...more on par with a fog I think? I guess they have an HID conversion you can do or you can replace the bulb with a 100w version?
@@AZdroptop you recommend 500 or 500ff?
