Former LSU baseball coach Paul Mainieri expected to take South Carolina job after 3 years retired

- It was widely reported Monday afternoon that former LSU baseball coach Paul Mainieri, who won a national championship with the Tigers in 2009 and got them back to a College World Series final in 2017, is expected to come out of retirement to fill the South Carolina head coaching vacancy.
Mainieri retired after the 2021 season and although he has been an advisory for Miami and another former team Notre Dame in their respective coaching searches, Mainieri has remained retired. However, the Gamecocks parted ways with their head coach Mark Kingston after the Gamecocks were eliminated by James Madison in the Raleigh regional. The hiring is expected to be made official after the South Carolina Board of Trustees meet to officially approve the hire.
Can Mainieri be successful at South Carolina? He is a proven commodity who has won championships and competed at a very high level for an extended period of time shown throughout his time at LSU. However, Mainieri has never existed in the NIL-era of collegiate athletics; Mainieri retired in June 2021, just one month before the Supreme Court unanimously voted to allow college athletes to benefit from the names, images, and likenesses. Is the former Tiger skipper ready to fully embrace the new wild west of college baseball, and is South Carolina going to give him the tools to be successful?

I got to know Paul Manieri at the Air Force Academy when he was the baseball coach. We had some civilian coaches who tried to shelter their players from the difficult parts of the Academy experience. Not Paul. As a graduate and now officer at USAFA, I found him not just supportive, but in awe of what his baseball players had to do in the very challenging Academy military and academic system. He loved going to the assault course or obstacle course to watch his players go through those experiences. He ADAPTED to the environment so quickly and so effectively! So for Caroline to say he’s too old and can’t adapt to the modern environment, well, don’t bet on it! He excelled in EVERY SINGLE PLACE HE WENT! At USAFA, he understood that in order to be a good baseball player, you needed to be a good cadet, too. Absolute gem of a leader, obviously a great coach, but someone who understood people, toughness, hard work, and diplomacy-he was a very good diplomat on behalf of his program. She used the word “gracious” and he certainly was that. And he REALLY knows baseball! Great move for South Carolina.
I never said he couldn’t adapt, I only question how well and how quickly he’s able to. But thank you for sharing, such an awesome testament to the coach and person Paul is!

I believe it makes sense from Carolina's perspective in that Ray Tanner (AD, 2X National Champion Head Coach at SC) has his future baseball coach on staff in Monte Lee.
P.M. is there to win now and ultimately groom Monte on the finer points of being a great head coach. After all Carolina just made him the highest paid assistant in college baseball. That's how I see it.
SC has Park Avenue. That's an nil bonus you can't overlook.
ND fans are very sad we got Mainieri out of his not so long retirement. They'd take him in a heartbeat 😊lucky us. He will be fine.... I'm impressed about the coaching staff we managed to get together

You don't understand it from Mainieri's perspective and you don't understand it from SC perspective. Really !!! DO your due diligence in research before making your comments. Everything makes very good sense !!
Mainieri has alive for baseball and after he got well again he want's to get back in it. To work for an AD that is a former College Baseball hall of fame coach, that has won two National championships and understands what Mainieri needs to win, is an excellent situation. Mainieri knows AD Ray Tanner quite well and Mainieri will get what he needs ! That includes a staff to take care of the NIL issues so he does not have to worry about that issue all the time.
Mainieri brings his pitching coach and Ace recruiter with him and has a great coach like Monte Lee, that is very well liked by the players, and is also an excellent recruiter, on the coaching staff. He has the opportunity to hire some other coaches of his choice. His assistant coaches will get well paid. He will be paid over $ 200,000 more than LSU paid, and he has the chance to make a legacy by winning National Championships at two Universities (that does not happen often). As long as his heath holds up he has the chance to be on the field again - It's in his blood.
Other schools have not offered him the advantages he has at South Carolina.
What's not to like ? It is the near perfect situation if he wants to return to active coaching.
Note: SC did not just win a national championship recently they went to the final game three years in a row and won two of those matchup , that two national championships in a row.

@@BillyBobCooter hahaha I’m not crying. Paul’s an incredible coach and I’m excited to see him back in the league. I think he’ll have success at South Carolina. LSU won a national championship after he left. We’re all doing just fine
