Even when a man, so humble and simple, like him receives an award, people still manages to be negative. Saying things like "who cares?", "It's just a Michelin", "That's Only For Rich People", and etc. I mean c'mon people. Why the hate? Such is the state of our world. So disappointing. Can't you just be happy that someone got recognized for their craft, regardless of who it came from, be it from a renowned critic or a small-time reviewer.

Well Said
So well said. Thank you!
Very well said..
It almost brought tears to my eyes. He didn't care about getting a Michelin Star (contrast that to Gordon Ramsey when he found out he wasn't getting his 3rd star), he was just cooking, doing his best to make a living and make other's happy with food, then Michelin called and he was honored. What a life lesson. Stop focusing on the accolades you can receive just do your best and it will come to you.
I respect them both. One is determined and really goal-oriented while other is humble and wants to serve. Room for both kinds in this world. Some people just need external confirmation more than others.
Yesh!!!
yeah no, this michellin star was bullshit
Awesome video. Now give the man a second award for being so humble and wise.
he was cooking for 35 years and people always lined up and loved his simple non-pretentious small portion food in big plates, for 35 years he supported his family by cooking street food....I don't know about others but for me this is the biggest achievement to be proud of.
Definitely! regardless of michelin star or not.
This guy is so happy and excited. What an awesome video.
you can see the HAPPINESS in his eyes. I wanna cry 😢😢I'm so proud of him (although i dont really know him)
this makes me unexplainably happy
Probably because you have no other real source of happiness in your life?
Johnny Threefour no need to project and make this a bad thing.
Me too, and I like to think that it's because of his obvious pride and happiness. It's nice to see hard work pay off.
Get a life
+Ong Yao Thank you!
What a humble and good natured man.
seriously you spend all this time making a well-produced mini documentary and you dont even have one shot of a full plate of food, -how frustrating!
shit... you're right! that's why i was left slightly unsatisfied...
yeah, it would add weight to him winning the award; we would understand his efforts!
Guess the $1.50 was too much to pay
proof is in the tasting not how it looks.
Agreed. All that hot action without a money shot? Terrible food porn!
This proves that you don't need to make criminally overpriced, pretentious food to be truly great. Congratulations to him!
yeah, i doubt the price has anything to do with his ethics and much more with the country and his location
Just you don't like it there is no need to bad mouth it, each to his own.
Murakification he gets a shit ton of customers everyday, but he accredited his michelin star to his customers and he felt that his customers helped him get it truly, so he never changed the price so he could give back to them.
I went to Singapore for a few days and fell in love with the hawker stalls. While my friend had the time to pick up food from 3 different stalls, I waited in line for this out of curiosity because there was a huge line. It was truly great for only the equivalent of 2$ CAD... then it won a Michelin star a few days later...
😑 so far you could be the only person in the comment section to have eaten at this stall
im a singaporean and i've never felt more proud to be a human being during this time period of 2016, im fucking crying
Before I die, I swear I will eat at a Michelin starred place like this one!
It's true. Michelin has always been absolutely bullshit. They didn't even start out by giving stars, it was a whole different company. And when they learned how obsessed people became they made it a thing. Can't believe Gordon Ramsey cried over losing a star once, it was embarrassing.
@deadmeh Did you just get molested or something? You got issues fam
@James Down Would Gordon Ramsay not be a superior authority on the matter by orders of magnitude? Stop acting like you know shit and keep the bitterness off random youtube comment pages, start doing drugs or something
El Stark
is it tiring for you to figure out how to properly use the youtube system to reply to comments? All those extra chromosomes you are carrying must be a mental workout.
wait the guy attacking people on youtube comments has the balls to say others have a sad life? LOL the hypocrisy is real with this dumbass
In case you didn't know, unless the person you are replying to doesnt have a google+ account tied to their youtube account you cant do the + thingy. And since you dont have it or knew about it, it is in fact you who is carrying extra chromosomes.
Met this guy and shook his hands. Very down to earth man. Never increased the price of his food.
It's so heartening to see his smiling face! I feel so happy for him! Congrats!!!
omg, probably one of the most humble person ever. No wonder why he received this award.
Probably so much better than most 5 star restaurants.
Probably even better than most 86 star restaurants - not sure about 3 star restaurants though...
Michelin stars go up to 3 mate.
Facepalm....
His humbleness and simplicity transmits itself into his food....bless him , he been through a lot and finally received some form of recognition for all the hard work he put .
very happy for him! hardworking and dedicated man. I applaud him!
He looks so humble and down to earth person. when he stood on the stage you can clearly see his eyes reflecting pride as a street hawker.
That's the spirit of Singapore in fact ~ hard working , doing the best , and be humble , never satisfied with what you have already achieved.
Saw him receiving his Michelin star, smiling so proud and humble... gave me some goose bumps, if i ever go to Singapore, i'll surely go to his stand!
What I love about this is you don't have to be grand to be great. I hope he has continued success.
He's a very humble man, despite the glory and the recognition, this is something we can learn from Mr Chan. Humility, dedication and perseverance
You are known internationally, today, Mr Meng. Hats off to your sincerity and humility. I will definitely give you a visit if I ever visit Singapore!
I really freaking PROUD man !
Brb, heading out for this Soya Sauce Chicken Rice now!
And? Was it awesome? Don't leave people hanging here!
Bring me a bowl plz
It's been two days. I think it didn't go so well.
Maybe it was so good that he ascended to heaven. Kinda like the foodgasms from SnS (a Manga about cooking) if anyone here is familiar with it.
+AbdulElah Hassanain He's still in the queue. He's been waiting for 2 days.
Awww, that makes me cry. He deserved this. :)
What a great honor!
Wait, the Michelin stars are awarded by the Michelin tire company? I must have been transmitted to a different universe.
It's because they wanted to promote restaurants so you would drive to them, maybe remember the Michelin brand as promoting high quality, and buy their tires.
No, it's from the 1900's when they made a book of places in the world worth travelling to no matter how far, and they would give them Michelin stars. Now it has evolved to just restaurants
DJstagen
I actually have Continental DWS's, and used to have Pilots. :D I guess they didn't need me to visit those restaurants.
It started as a travel guide. Now it's some important shit.
just like Guinness book of records is from the stout beer manufacturer
I've never been to a michelin star restaurant but i'm happy this guy got a Michelin star. I always feel like most (not all) hole in the wall places serve tasty food because that's how they must survive in the cut throat foodie world where gourmet haute cuisine restaurant often take the spotlight. Congratulations to Chan Hon Meng!
So happy I found this, definitely going to meet this man and congratulate him personally for his love for food and tenacity. Cannot wait to try the meal!
A serious inspiration to all cooks and chefs alike.... anything is possible with hard work, commitment and humility. as a chef... I give him a bow
Well said MR. Chan. What a humble guy he was! Done Singapore proud.
When i watched him at the beginning of the video he Was dressing on and i saw his hands and fingers, and what did i see? I saw the hands of a hard working man who works to feed his family he's Humble and passionate of his work. Respect to him.
this honestly brought tears to my eyes.
Congratulations Mr Chan!
Although you're probably a Singaporean now, I'm glad to have known that you were from Ipoh and that there in Singapore you managed to live your life how you wanted and grew into the success you have toiled everyday for (even if it was unexpected).
To those asking for pics: He sells meat on noodles. The meat is clearly shown, it's like BBQ. Google Images: Soya Sauce Chicken Rice and Noodle
Well Done, Uncle Chan.... Congratulations for your Michelin Star ....Happy to know you are from Malaysia as well! May God bless you, always. Thank you to Michelin Guide Singapore ....
A man from Malaysia, selling Hong Kong-styled cuisine, in Singapore. That's Truly Asia!
Superb production quality on the video.
Singapore Hawker food is one of the true joys to visiting Singapore.
If by 'one of the' you mean 'only', I wholeheartedly agree. Singapore is perhaps the most boring city in Asia, but they absolutely bring it with the food. Those hawker stalls are absolutely wonderful and singlehandedly make Singapore a decent place to stay for a couple days.
Beautiful.
Well done Mr Chan, we are all very proud of you.
47 people that disliked are his neighbouring hawkers😂
emjay LOL
That man is an inspiration to us all.
They cut out that part where he asks the Michelin rep, "can street hawkers even be nominated?" and Michelin told him, "we judge by the food, not by the location." Which is...untrue. I imagine that's why they've cut it out of this video, which had replaced the other one that had millions of views.
Nothing is impossible, so touch
Humbling... passion always before business gives you all the rewards!
BRAVO. I am so happy for you, may you stay the same through times. Jia you!
Got to look him up on our next trip back to Singapore. Congratulations!
I somehow feel...cleansed. This satiated my soul.
"Hey soul! Breakfast!" "Dunno if I feel like consuming videos right now...wait...AND HE'S A SMALL BUSINESS OWNER OF A STREET STALL?!? Soooooo _SATISFYING_!!!"
When you walked by this restaurant...and thought...what a long queue for one shop that looks like any other and few months after you find that video :D
What a humble man!
Such a nice guy, he deserves it!
I will definitely give this place a visit.
That's just inspirational.
From the uk & im going to Singapore in 2017 I've got the address and I know what I'm getting to eat !!!! Looks great & good on him
beautiful and inspiring .
The times are changing! No more arrogant chefs!!
What a humble man
This is wonderful!
If I was wealthier, I'd fly there just to eat his food.
One man show. I m impressed.
So, when are you coming back to your homeland? Our homeland has now become famous.....................
Oh I have to go to Singapore to try this!
Amazing video and an amazing person, well deserved Sir, i hope someday i'll taste his dish. Kuddos !
What a great story! ^ ^ Chan Hon Meng Well deserved!
kudos to you sir! i wish i knew about this during my short time in singapore last year
Where is a fucking image of the finished food? I watched the whole thing, don't just show him cooking, show me the final product that actually got a michelin star!
yeah! show the finished food!
It's more of a poached chicken rather than braised.
My thoughts exactly.
Every dish sold in the stall is shown in the signboard at 4:40 :)
You can actually imagine it, noodles with the chickens on top, just as simple as that. Btw you can also find the picture on an article through google.
just imagine being in singapore and passing by this and later after gone find out u just missed a michelin lunch with only 10 bucks.
That must be painful
He can speak Mandarin, good!
This is incredible.
永远支持好食物,因为好吃的食物能让人开心。感谢陈先生用心煮出美味的油鸡面给顾客享受并且让他们觉得开心,老天一定会保佑你的! 🍜 Forever support good food because it brings joy to our hearts. Thanks Mr.Chan for being so nice, God will surely bless you in all ways! 🌻
I would love to visit his stall one day and try the food. It looks delicious! He certainly deserves that Michelin award. I hope you continue to be successful, Mr. Chan! :D
one more reason to visit Singapore soon!
Awesome will visit this place next year durig my trip
Good for him, inspiring chef and video!
I'm headed to Singapore in less than a month and I will try and go here but I don't know if I can stand in line for 2 hours!
I HONOR YOU Sr. ... WTG !!!
Congratulations
if anyone ever wonders the song when he receives his star is Santorini by Yanni
Awesome story
what a legend.
So I understand that Michelin star is the highest honor a chef can get, but can someone explain to me why Michelin (a company who produces car tyres) has anything to do with culinary prestige? How did they get from car tyres to food critics?
IIRC, the whole history can be found on wiki.
Joke's on them I use Bridgestone
Just like Guinness World Records book has transfered from some entertaining book for reading in pub while drinking beer to thing that is it today
Go to their website for the answer.
Money.
Cheers to Chan Hon Meng!
Respect and chapeau for it
for fucks sake, double the price so this man gets the real reward for his skills. what a humble person
that really looks delicious
Молодец! Он прям крут! И Мешлен молодцы, что дали награду палатке, потому что реально большинство питается в таких палатках.
Inspiring
Idk man I cried watching this
we want to see one of his dishes... After all,how can we believe if he really had done a michelin dish?
Does he do delivery? I'm in London. Don't mind waiting.
Probably expired when it gets to london. No one does that
Please! Please give the recipe now! I want to taste this Soya Sauce Chicken Rice and Noodle
:) This makes me a little more happy.
Why are there two weird cuts in this video?
the true chef
Great story and I'm happy for him. But here is what we need to think about: Long before Michelin Guide was even created, Asia already has the best food culture in the world. Michelin may be needed in Europe and are judged by white people, catered to their tastes and customs. We Asians should not over-emphasize the importance of Michelin star ratings when it comes to Asian food. We already know what's good and what's not.
,Then this guide is for white people and not asians. There
STFU!
This coming from a guy who's diet consists of protein shakes and high fives
>Asia already has the best food culture in the world.
That's a bit unfair don't you think?
I'd say America does, for as a general culture it's not nearly as weighed down by racism and xenophobia as Asia is. Asia is well known as the most racist continent on the planet, and its people have a cultural superiority complex in so many matters - case in point.
America is diverse and as far as food goes embraces all novelty and variation. All food types are embraced, and as such they find out such things as how well Avocado goes with Sushi, a discovery that could have never happened had we all kept to our own cultures. Cultures all over the world perfected new kinds of food for american consumption.
Korea's pretty good at extracultural food but nowhere can be as good as America, as America is just simply more diverse.
When I was in Japan I was blown away by the food, even tiny hole in the wall restaurants were great. I don't know about the best food in the world but everything I ate was impressive.
where is his stall? id like to go therr. seriously..
Tiara Nugroho Singapore chinatown
Such a humble, egoless man. He's simple but I bet he makes the best goddam chicken noodle in the world.
No one else think it's weird that the prize for truly great food is a star from a company that makes tires..?
For at least 30 years, Michelin has had this whole operation tied down!

I'm glad Mr. Chan got his Michelin Star. Now I can actually go to a Michelin rated establishment and actually have 2nds or 3rd helpings without worrying about emptying my wallet lol.
