I had always preferred Gabrieli with large choirs, brass, winds, and strings doubling the voices, but this performance is so amazingly lush and resonant and you can so easily follow all the texture of the polyphony. Clear, unpretentious, and rich.
My heartfelt congratulations and thanks to Robert Hollingworth and a magical assembly of musicians for creating something very special indeed. I am overwhelmed by this!
Che bravi! what a great experience.. I also appreciated the explanation the little beans gave about the execution etc. Apprezzatissimo l'introduzione con informazioni sull'esecuzione e storia
My remote paternal ancestors were originally surnamed 'Brewer'. I can reliably trace my paternity to a certain George Brewer Sr of Brunswick County Virginia, who died in 1744. His first wife (also my ancestor) was named Sarah Lanier, a daughter (or perhaps granddaughter -- the evidence on this is unfortunately unresolved), of a certain John Lanier of Prince George County Virginia, an immigrant from England. This John Lanier is known to have been descended from a Clement Lanier of London. This Clement Lanier was himself a son of Nicholas Lanier the Elder, a musician of Henry VIII originally from France, who was married off to 'Lucreece' Bassano, sister of the famed Bassano brothers of Venice, whom Henry VIII also brought over to England to serve as his recorder consort. Thus, I am almost certainly a distant living relative of this Giovanni Bassano! ❤
